It was kept off the top spot by "The One and Only" by Chesney Hawkes. I read somewhere that apparently Chesney disliked his song, and he was James fan and was very embarassed- he came and apologised to the band when they were on top of the pops together.
Oh my God you're right. I know I had it, but somehow missed it out. Interesting point about that particular No.2 as well - it was the closest song ever to miss No.1 - it was behind by something ridiculous like 5 copies (normally it'd be several thousand difference)!
Had it been released several months later, though,it could have joined Heavy D & the Boyz,Extreme,Right Said Fred,Salt 'n' Pepa and the Scorpions in all coming runners-up to Bryan Adams.
'Sit Down' by James is one of those ultimate 'Should've been Number Ones' I think, such an anthem!

New celebrities (1990-1991)
1990- Mariah Carey and MC hammer
1991- Celine Dion
Deee-Lite was number 2 and it's missing
True,well spotted. August/September 1990.
Why was Blue Velvet in the charts in 1990?
It was part of an advertising campaign by Nivea. Demand for the song caused it to be re-released
michaelleacy I see
Did it have something to do with the film named after it as well?

Ok!
Had to downvote this time, dear Michael, too much dance.
