In order to get a better picture, one needs to dive into the context of where this trainer fits within the overall aesthetic/ethos of the brand and how it relates to society. It is intended as a somewhat ironic take of something a dad/grandpa would wear. It adheres to the rest of the men’s mainline collection which basically takes mundane items and deconstructs/reconstructs /manipulates proportion(s) to create something modern and new. What the team at Balenciaga has done culturally is quite significant. They have managed to move the eye and shift what would otherwise be deemed boring, silly and inconceivable into something fresh and desirable. The whole sneaker world has taken notice. Given the amount of elements, the shoe itself is balanced and functional. The curvilinear lines, the choice of materials/fabrics and branding/graphics (especially for me the basic logo hit on the liner and the use of the word “track”) combine to tell a fascinating story. The price tag is quite steep - but essentially you are building custom moulds for 3 times as many components. You are also paying for the experience of the brand - designers, packaging, manufacturing, time under-the-needle (if you will), quality, marketing, runway. While the shoes don’t necessarily seem to resonate with most, there is a sect of the population willing to challenge the norm. True fashion is and should always be polarizing. Footwear (like cars, jewelry, etc.) is a medium where you can express your personality. We tend to wear brands as a way to communicate ideals, interests and status.

Just take a look at some of the non high-end designer shoes - NMD HU Pharrells retail for $250, 700's are $300, Nike Adapts & Adidas 4Ds are $350. I'd say $400-$500 is more realistic.

So I wouldn’t buy the shoe… if it didn’t have a triple black color way. Now I know the black sneakers are a no go usually but it’s so perfect on this one because the different panels make it look almost like membrane layering.
