    In all my 62 years I've never heard of such a brilliant idea!

      Thanks, I am certainly not the first person to think of this, but this is my version of the idea lol Thanks for watching 🙂

    I agree with feeding the hay on top of the compression rods, but I wouldn't make the ramp to flat. I would still want the hay to gravity feed in. With a little tweaking you will get it just right. Thanks for sharing Chris.

      Yes, I think a slight downward angle to keep the hay moving, but slow it down and keep me from bending over so much lol I'll keep working at it 🙂

    looks like a good set up to me, lowering the incline should work

    First thing that comes to mind is economics I’ve experimented doing this a couple times in the last 30 years and to me it was a waste of time so Round Bales always seem to go for a pretty decent money nowadays though second thing is you’re pretty damn close to that Baylor pick up I’m sure I’m not the only one going to be mentioning that

    Looking good buddy. Taking some of the angle out might help . You could build you a feeder table kinda like I had that runs on hydraulics then you could stand there and control the speed of hay going in the Baler. Move your slide back 6-10 feet let it dump on the feed table. Plus it will give you more room to work. Have a good week

      Thanks Jacky! I was wondering about something like that. Maybe modifying an old hay elevator to use as a feed table. You got me thinking!!

      Around here you could find an old Chopper box it already has that slatted chain and a floor and sideboards a short or tall as you would want.
      Looks like it was working pretty good but yeah if there was a way to get you out from that other Baler pickup for safety I don't know

    Idk why but the rebaling thing is fascinating to me, until I seen Jacky doing it i never seen it before, something that doesn't happen up this way. Some sort of a cradle with roller to set the bale in thats run off the hydraulics from the baler tractor, and a control next to you so you can run it how ever you want. Kinda like Jacky had and talks about above ☝. Or one of them Hustler chainless bale unrollers would be sweet if you were looking to drop some dough lol.

      I was thinking about adding a small hydraulic table at the bottom of my chute to control the flow. Maybe buy an old hay elevator and repurpose it 🙂

    I Can't offer anything useful to your set up Chris, what you have is working great. I agree with the bending over would have to be tiring to your back. Maybe lowering the feed chute would help. If not, have you thought about building a platform to raise the bailer. Or maybe even putting some blocks under the bailer tires to raise it 12" or 16"s. Just a thought. I remember when firewood splitters were new in the market, I never could use one as I'm 6' 2" and they killed my back after 15 minutes from working bent over. Just a thought...

    • @dehavenfamilyfarm
      @dehavenfamilyfarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its funny you mention the log splitter. I had one that we used to put up on car ramps to make it more comfortable to use lol You got me thinking 🙂

      My idea is definitely still in the prototype phase lol I would like to have something that was built more for this purpose, but the cheapest unit i can find is around $7k- and that's way more than I can justify spending at this point.

    Oh man. It just hit me. You could put a Small hay Tedder in front of the hay pickup on the baler. Turn the Tedder on and use the unroller to drop the hay in the center of the Tedder and let it toss the hay back into the pickup on the baler. You would get a nice fluffy feed of hay that isn’t too dense snd never have ti be close to the machine.

  • @Cake41579
    @Cake41579 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What if you put stiffer pickup teeth in the baler snd remove the compression guard and let the baler pickup spin the baler or still use the bale unroller but move it down closer

    • @dehavenfamilyfarm
      @dehavenfamilyfarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure... It would have to be a quick process because the baler may be used in the field one day and for rebaling the next. But it does get me thinking!

    Good operation for a small farmer such as yourself, just be careful with that long sleeve feeding the square baler.

    I understand why you're rebaling but man that's a lot of work. Not sure what the difference in price is but it needs to be substantial.

    • @dehavenfamilyfarm
      @dehavenfamilyfarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It works out for me because I mainly am a one man show when it comes to the hay operation, so i don't have a bunch of money going out for employees- just my time. And speaking of time, it is way faster for me to round bale than square bale, so its not quite as bad as you might think. That being said, I don't think I would switch my whole operation over to rebaling, it will just be as needed. I think I need to do a video to better explain, because lots of folks have lots of good questions about the process 🙂

    • @lifebehindacow5999
      @lifebehindacow5999 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dehavenfamilyfarm That would make an interesting video. I would love to have a small square baler someday. I could use a couple hundred a year and maybe a few straw bales as well but the only small bales close by are priced out of my reach. I used to buy three thousand a year. Now the only hay I buy comes in big squares. The world has moved on I guess.

  • @SLCFarms
    @SLCFarms 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Biggest issue is you cant control what you feed, that and not being able to fluff the hay will cause inconsistency in bale lengths and weight. At least you have the kicker so that cuts the back breaking work

    • @dehavenfamilyfarm
      @dehavenfamilyfarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not fluffing the hay doesn't seem to be a problem, but the inconsistent flow of hay into the baler definitely is. And I do like having the wagon there to catch the bales 🙂 I am thinking of building a short feeding table, maybe out of an old hay elevator, to control the flow of hay into the baler. I would put it at the bottom of the gravity ramp I have now.
