Mariah is a songwriter, producer, composer, director, and vocalist. She writes ALL her music except the covers, and she’s SO good at it that she got admitted into songwriters hall of fame. She makes all her melodies HERSELF and does ALL her background vocals and layers them HERSELF too, and she chooses her beats and instrumentals and often does little sound effects with her voice itself. She has perfect pitch and is a musical genius, she also has like THE best musicality EVER, she has the ability to make intricate melodies ON THE SPOT and we know this from the countless impromptu acapellas she’s done where she’s essentially freestyling her vocals and it fits perfectly with the instrumentals being played or just as a melody in itself. And she’s a director because she’s directed a few music videos :)!

Mariah co-writes and co-produces all of her own music. She doesn’t write and produce on her own. To this day she hasn’t written or produced a song on her own. Also, many of her biggest hits contain samples of music made by other artists.

    • @BaddieRiah
      @BaddieRiah หลายเดือนก่อน +6

@@remingtongraves you do realize that as long as someone writes ONE word in an entire song they get songwriting credits right? Mariah DOES write all her music and her style of writing has always been the same, she most likely only has editors revise through the writing. She’s a poet, shes BEEN writing songs since childhood and had most of her debut album already written by the time she got signed, again, she only had editors revise her work. As for production, Mariah DOES do all her vocal layerings herself, she likes collaborating when it comes to beat and instrumental production but when it comes to vocals, she literally has said she actually gets everyone out of the booth so she can be comfortable to do what she does best and do it ALONE. So u tryna discredit Mariah on her own work is cute but you’ll need to try harder.

@@remingtongraves let me educate you since you clearly don't know anything.
Firstly, when Mariah is credited with 1 other person as the song writer on a song, which is most of the 90s, 75% of the time she wrote ALL of the lyrics and came up with the melody, the only reason she has another person credited is because she can't play the piano and that person usually does and helps her tie the melodies together via the piano, she and her "co-writers" namely Walter have said that enough times during interviews.
Secondly, most of her samples don't take up the entire song, she usually just uses a sample for the beginning of the song, or the bridge of the song or both but she still needs to come up with a new melody since it's an original song not a cover. She has often said she samples songs because she loves music and appreciates good songs and since she's a humanbeing she draws inspiration from others, that doesn't make her any less a song writer than whoever you consider to be one.
Whether or not you want to give her credited for her songwriting skills is irrelevant the truth will always remain the truth, she writes her OWN songs and comes up with her own melody.

She actually now has 19 number ones. The Beatles have 20. She could have had two more but her record label blocked one at number two to prove a point to her, and her song we belong together blocked another one of her songs called shake It off from reaching number one. Two of her songs are also songs of the decade, obviously in separate decades. If you like more up-tempo you might check out her remixes. She was also called the queen of the remix because she remixed so many of her songs and redid vocals for all of them. She even has a remixes album but there's lots more. I would say start with the c + c music factory remix of anytime you need a friend. It is 11 minutes long, but it's a good 11 minutes.
And yes, soooo many of her deep cuts are Incredible. many even better than songs that were singles.

@@bennshouts yeah. If you go into her whole discography it is pretty amazing, and her sound always changes. Her 2018 album Caution was really good, and very modern sounding. She does literally have stuff in almost every genre. Of course pop, r&b, hip hop,, some rock, a few country songs (for a movie), a few jazz, etc.... and then the fact that she writes all her stuff, and has a hand in producing, arranging, and singing backgrounds, just goes to show the musicality. Oh, and also the fact that in so many of her live performances she changes the songs, and often makes them way harder than the original versions.

I have to find it, but I am positive I saw a documentary or something years ago where someone explained that yes they did want to sell more records, but that they were also exerting some control, because she was getting so big so fast, and it was kind of a reminder of who was in charge. I have to find it. I normally wouldn't say something unless I had links or anything like that, but that one really stuck with me. Aside from the occasional cover, Mariah writes and produces all of her songs. She wrote 18 of her 19 number 1 hits! I like that you picked up on how relatable her writing is, she has said she doesn't like to make her lyrics overly specific so that anyone can relate their experiences to them. Just FYI the last few songs weren't her most recent, Vision of Love for example was her debut single. If you ever react to one of her regular albums I would recommend Butterfly!

So “I still believe” has a very different sound from her because she actually was VERY overworked during that time of her life and she overused tf out of her voice so it started “deteriorating”, she sounded WAY more husky and raspy and it lowered too. She could still do a lot of what she could before vocally but it just took way more effort for her. This time was 1998 btw, the late 90s was the end of her “vocal prime”. She did have a comeback in the early 2000s tho vocally. But yea u mentioned it sounded like she had a cold that’s cuz like I said, her voice was huskier from the exhaustion and over-usage. Her vocal style changed lots throughout the years, even in her “prime years” it would still change.

Fun fact, her first 5 singles were #1 hits! 4 of them from her DEBUT album including her FIRST EVER SONG and debut single “vision of love”, and the 5th #1 was the lead single “emotions” from the album “emotions” lol. She’s the only ever artist to achieve this feat alongside MJ and Katy Perry. She has the most #1s in history out of any solo artist. She had AT LEAST a #1 hit for EVERY SINGLE year of the 90s decade, meaning by the end of the decade she had 14, the album ur reacting to was made in 1998 but in 1999 she had another #1 hit which is why the song wasn’t on there, it’s called “Heartbreaker” ft. Jay Z. And fun fact that same song was the song that gave Jay Z his first #1 so she essentially helped him get it cuz it’s her song lol. She also had the longest running #1 song of ALL TIME with “one sweet day” spending 16 WEEKS AT #1 and it was ALSO song of the decade, until recently when “old town road” broke that record. And she was the best selling artist of the 90s decade, and most successful and popular BY FAR! She was awarded artist of the decade and even MILLENNIUM. In the 2000s she had ANOTHER MASSIVEEE hit with “we belong together” spending 14 WEEKS at #1 and it was AGAIN, song of the decade for the 2000s!! She’s the only artist EVER to have had song of the decade TWICE!!! She’s also the best selling certified female artist in the US of all time and top 3 best selling female artists worldwide.

When she did MTV Unplugged in 1992, the producers wanted her to do a cover and she decided to do I'll Be There by the Jackson 5. The concert was so popular, it ended up being released as a live album and video. Radio stations were flooded with requests to play the cover of I'll Be There and it was eventually released as a single and went #1. It's the only one of her 19 #1's that she has not written/co-written.

w"I'll Be There" was sung by Michael Jackson when he was with the Jackson 5. Mariah covered it when she did MTV Unplugged (they didn't allow new original songs on the show.) Her show was released as an album and "I'll Be There" was released as a single and went to number one.

    • @lutalice
      @lutalice หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Just a little correction: MTV Unplugged absolutely allowed original material. It was a 7-song set, and last minute she was asked by MTV to include a cover, so she replaced fan-favourite "Vanishing" with "I'll be there." The response was so positive that she was originally going to record it in the studio, but, worried someone might steal her idea of covering the song (for real, lol), they decided to put out the entire show as an EP, with "I'll be there" as the single, as performed that night (impromptu, mind you). And voila, her #6th US #1 lol.
As for Vision of Love, it has that old school vibe that Americans really vibe with, and was a hugely successful debut there, and remains one of her most beloved songs - in America. In Australia though, and other markets, it was the follow-up, Love takes time, that really made its mark. (If it hasn't been pointed out already, this tracklist is in *backwards* chronological order). After that, in Australia, I'll be there, Emotions, Dreamlover and Hero were big radio hits, but it was "Without You" that made her a superstar, both here and in Europe. It reached #2 in the US, so it's not featured here, but it's a bonus track on all non-US editions. Sadly, all my favourite singles were the ones that didn't hit the top of the charts: Without you, Can't let go, Butterfly, Breakdown, The Roof... 😔
God, I really do tend to ramble whenever I'm commenting on your videos 😂🤦‍♂️ It's just that you've been reacting to so many artists I was obsessed with since I was a teenager in the 90s (and beyond); Mariah, Madonna, Tori Amos, Janet... and there's just so much useless information I've been storing in my brain for 30+ years, it's cathartic to actually share it somewhere 😂😂😂
There's a pop-rock album by Amanda Marshall (self titled debut) from 1995 that I think you'd enjoy. Fingers crossed, I know your list is long lol. And I promise to become a patron soon as I can afford it, but dammit man, drugs are just so expensive these days! 😜😅

There IS a story about I'll Be There. Milli Vanilli just got found out to be frauds, so the public was looking for other fakers. Mariah had 2 successful albums out, but no tour, and her voice was considered to be 'superhuman'. People started to wonder if she was somehow 'studio magic'. So, her label had her do Mtv's Unplugged, which was originally for rock artists, Mariah became the first pop star on there.
It's customary to add a cover, Mariah chose that song. Critics raved about her live vocals, so radio stations started to play snippets of it on air. The public loved it and demanded to hear the whole thing, so dj's started playing it.
The song began charting and rising on the charts while Mariah and her label looked at each other like wtf? It was never released, but since the public liked it they sent it out as an official single. They made it #1. MC and the label really didn't do anything, it wasn't planned. They just wanted to prove that really was her voice without taking time off to tour because the label wanted a new album every year.

That song came out in the early 90's so popular back then as she was up and coming artist its what made her more well know was with that song being played every where on the radio all the time. Nit many female artists had that kind of tones and melodies and singing abilities so it was very rare (Whitney Houston) was already a big name when Mariah started out.

I’d argue one of Mariah’s greatest accomplishments of her career was being inducted into the songwriters hall of fame. She’s been writing music since she was a child and even has written songs for others like “Where are you christmas” for the grinch. The last song you heard was “I still believe”, it was during a time where mariah’s voice was changing (1998-99). She eventually gained back her bright tone in 2001.

I've never watched an entire video of someone being so oblivious to one of the most accomplished artists of all times... the amount of ingorance and misinformation here is stunning.
#1's basically chronicles all of her material from her earlier career. I mean, it only represents 6 of her 15 studio albums. That's not to say that she didn't have any hits after 1998, in contrary:
    1999 - #1 - Heartbreaker
    2000 - #1 - Thank God I Found You
    2000 - #28 - Crybaby / Can't Take that Away
    2001 - #2 - Loverboy
    2003 - #3 - I Know what you Want
    2004 - #21 - U Make me Wanna
    2005 - #16 - It's Like That
    2005 - #1 - We Belong Together
    2005 - #2 - Shake It Off
    2005 - #1 - Don't Forget About Us
    2008 - #1 - Touch my Body
    2008 - #19 - Bye Bye
    2008 - #58 - I'll Be Lovin' You Long Time
    2009 - #7 - Obsessed
    2013 - #15 - #Beautiful
    2019 - #1 - All I want for Christmas Is You (released 1994)
Then a dozen more top 10 / 20 hits from the 90s that aren't on #1's, plus all the great album cuts which weren't even singles.
Her most recent single in Australia, was 2022's Big Energy Remix, which went top #10 in Australia and is certified 3x platinum in the country. It's with the rapper Latto.

Mariah's career is so interesting. From the start of her career up until the mid-90s she was married to a much older man who was an executive at her record label. He pretty much controlled her life and forced her to stick to the sappy ballads and keep a squeaky-clean image to appeal to the masses. She's spoken about how this was a really miserable time for her and she felt abused and manipulated and had no say in her music or her career. When she divorced him, she started to dress sexier (which she was never allowed to before) and leaned into the more rnb/hip hop sound. There's a famous feud between her and J.Lo because her ex husband found out about a sample Mariah was using on her upcoming single (after she divorced him) and out of spite, he had that sample added to J.Lo's song and released that first, so Mariah had to start from scratch and change her song that she'd already recorded. You're right in saying that her best songs are not necessarily her number 1 singles from this album. I'm not a huge stan of hers but can understand why you'd be underwhelmed if this album was your first exposure, or maybe she's just not your cup of tea. Fun reaction!

    • @Lauren09122

I wouldn’t say Mariah leaned into a more RnB sound…her music since the beginning was RnB. She went #1 on the RnB charts before any other chart to start her career. Her first two albums were heavily soulful..full and RnB with New Jack Swing inspiration. There was a lot of gospel influences as well. Anyways, RnB has different stylings…then after Emotions, you get contemporary RnB. Even before Fantasy, you get glimpses into Mariah’s love for Hip Hop. After her divorce, you see a deeper dive that sways from the contemporary RnB she transitioned into after Emotions and into what would become one of her signature sounds. Tommy hated everything that Mariah embraced..she’s biracial (black and white) and he hated that she embraced being black. He also hated that she wanted to embrace musical styles she grew up listening to, being inspired by…and were huge to the development of her musical roots. He hated it because that may not connect to audiences that Whitney’s music connected with since Mariah and her music came out the gate very soulful. Tommy wanted to mimic the Whitney and Clive Davis formula but Mariah, musically, was much different than Whitney. Both had HUGE voices with extreme vocal talent but Mariah’s music was heavier sonically…very richly soulful and showed how influenced she was by Aretha and Stevie Wonder. I think Tommy tolerated that but he wanted a sonically lighter Whitney pop feel and that’s why you see Mariah transition into a lighter contemporary RnB sound after Emotions and to appeal to different audiences because those audiences (white international audiences for example) may connect to ballads more. When she divorced Tommy, she was free to be an artist that didn’t have to worry about crossing over even though she was always going to be able to since she is so versatile with a great voice. She could create a song that would go #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and then a remix that would top the RnB charts…dance charts etc. You just see Mariah be Mariah and her natural talent shine without someone trying to dictate the direction of her career or her image.

All other tracks were included to help it sell 17M copies. Sweetheart & I Still Believe were seat covers. Whenever You Call is originally from Butterfly and is better without the feature. Honey's piano is a sample from Hey DJ.

Also, I love that you kinda dismissed her music as just “love songs” because fun fact: in the mid-90s Madonna was asked how she would deal with it if she was the kind of artist that had to sing mindless love songs to be popular like Mariah Carey and she said “I’d kill myself.” Haha. It was blown out of proportion in the media with everyone saying Madonna said “I’d kill myself if I were Mariah Carey” but that’s not what she said. Even Mariah got offended and made an ageist joke about Madonna in response. My guess is Mariah didn’t read the actual interview or else she’d know Madonna hadn’t even mention her. It’s reminiscent of the Gaga/“reductive” comment years later. Madonna hadn’t even mentioned Gaga. She was asked how she felt about the comparisons between them and she said “It feels reductive.” But the media reported it as Madonna saying “Lady Gaga is reductive.” Again, Gaga got offended and she probably didn’t watch the interview herself or she’d know Madonna didn’t actually say that. Anyway, just some fun tidbits. Ha.

Lucky? Child, please. Mariah worked her butt off regardless of family drama, that predatory deal Marguiles convinced her to sign early on, or the controlling ways of her ex-husband. Y'all act like Sony wasn't warring with Warner Bros to sign her. Everyone knew the potential of Mariah's billion dollar talent. They were lucky to have her.

@@remingtongraves Buddy she literally is like the best selling foreign artist in Japan, HUGE in places like The Philippines and the rest of Asia too (which is the biggest continent :)) She’s had the longest running #1 of ALL TIME in Brazil with “I wanna know what love is” spending 27 weeks at #1 and that was in the 2010s so she had LONGGGG been separated from Tommy or his influence💀. She’s huge in certain places in Africa too like South Africa. Even in Europe she’s one of the most successful artists of all time. By 1993 with her “music box” album she had become an international mega star. “Without u” is one of her BIGGEST hits EVER internationally, it’s literally bigger in most places of Europe and other continents than in the US itself, it went #1 in countless countries but peaked at #3 in the US, so to say she’s not very popular outside the US is a BOLD lie😭. The only places she’s not nearly as big in is most of Latin America (again excluding certain places like Brazil cuz she’s one of THE biggest artists there), and maybe some of Africa. If u were referring to her debut and sophomore albums sure, they weren’t THAT big of hits internationally, mostly in the US, but like I said, her 3rd album “music box” had cemented her as an INTERNATIONAL artist, this has even been acknowledged and said in MANY interviews and articles of back in the day when the album came out, that she had become an international phenomenon.

She’s literally the biggest selling western artist in ALL of Asia. She was given a certificate for selling over a billion records in Asia just recently. She is the biggest selling female artist in countries outside the US..multiple countries and has sold nearly 300 million records worldwide and most likely more. You sound like a weirdo downplaying one of the biggest artists in music history and it’s probably for some petty reason like you being a fan of another female artist and wanting to spread your hate here. She had number ones before Tommy and after him. Tommy didn’t give her that singing voice or write her songs. Tommy also didn’t make people get up and drive to buy physical copies of her records. One of her biggest albums was the biggest seller of 2005…she created her second song of the decade in the 2000s and had multiple number one songs after her divorce from him. Her “I want to know what love is” cover just went Diamond in Brazil. Get a life…Mariah is a very versatile artist but she is an RnB artist…since her first album, her songs have always been heavily gospel and soul inspired or gospel and soulful. Then throughout her career you get different variations of RnB styles so if you’re not an RnB fan, why get on here to spread nonsense and speak opinions as if they are fact? I’ve noticed that it’s always people who don’t listen to RnB music, commenting on RnB artists. For an RnB artist (with the versatility to cross over many charts) to be as worldwide as she is and be so popular in countries across Europe, South America, North America and in Australia as well as African countries, you have to make songs that people love and will listen to which she has. She’s one of the biggest artists internationally and that’s as an artist that doesn’t just make ballads or dance music.

The United States is the largest music market. None of her # 1’s are forgettable. Considering she has sold nearly 300 million records worldwide…clearly none of her songs are “forgettable”. If you believe that, it’s because you don’t like RnB music and there’s always this weird sentiment around RnB music where people will say it’s “forgettable”. Hm I wonder why that is… 🙄 This album features contemporary RnB, New Jack Swing, Soul etc based on the track. Considering she’s an American artist and one of the biggest artists worldwide, you thinking that her music is forgettable is more of an indictment on you than it is on her music. Her music from decades ago still plays on the radio and people still blast her songs in their car as well as stream her music. Her music is timeless.
