Thank you for the video! I replaced the clutch thinking that was the issue but it still surged (the old clutch was worn out so not a total waste of time) I am going to give these modifications a shot tomorrow!
I as a kid in the 70s figured out this fix by myself after Honda wanted $750 just to split the cases on a $299NZ retail bike. I learnt the hard way the pawl shaft was left hand thread (No manual ! ) showed Engineer dads friend who recc. Changing pawl - he was a stern drive master which helped...Also the little sprung plug in the side case : this wears the hole/housing oval , especially after mods - get this brass sleived or it will wear body hole oval & hang shifts up too incl 0 & 1 .I did this in '74 before the Honda memo & kit came out. I had to fix it , was racing it at the time & couldnt afford some Shop gtease-monkey guessing with pocket money. Trev. NZ if only i STILL had that forgiving bike - Candy Red & from New.😧
I had one of these bought it new back in 72 from the Honda Fun wheels dealer in Coram NY, it had this second gear slip, they were not interested in fixing it. It was brandnew and all it would do is run in first gear, second gear was like hit and miss every other 5 seconds. Needless to say that mini bike was a big disappointment. Traded it in for a other bike a short time later at another dealer
Nice video. Thoroughly thought out. Good to hear this worked for you. I noticed the surface of the shift arm you modified looked a bit rough in the video (appx 8:00 minutes). I assumed you polished it prior to assembly and would recommend others doing so.
Yep, recommended for everyone to clean everything up. I was still in trial and error stage. I did the best i could for an amateur and hope the video has helped everyone with a QA understand the inner workings of their box and gives a few ideas on fixing the problem. Good luck everyone.
@@alexbrown64 it didn't "slip" (that infers the clutch) , they jumped out of 2 gear under load. But your correct , we know what u mean - excuse me: I've had a massive stroke @ 57 & spent 5 months in hospital & should be dead . T
I used to have a QA50 when I was 7yrs old, I bought for $15 bucks off my friend who was moving and couldnt take it with him. I cleaned the carb and replaced the tires to make it look new again. I had it till I was 16 and used it as a pit bike. My family used to ask me if I still had the Charlie Brown bike. I have a little boy now, hes ready for his first bike, Im looking for another QA50 for him.

Hi. Get the qa50 tear down dvd from Mark Pearson at HONDA QA50, ENGINE, REBUILD Its worth it. With what i have explained and Marks rebuild dvd you will be up and rocking. My qa50 transmission now works great.
Sorry Jonny boy, realize your problem was 3 years ago. Hope you got it sorted. This is a QA50 tranny repair video. If you have a tractor, car, remote control airoplane etc.. you may have to search TH-cam a little more..
Thanks Alex for a great video. I also made a video that I hope might help some people trying to restore these awesome little machines! th-cam.com/video/migYuVzr2ZA/w-d-xo.html
nice one Al, I love it when someone explaines in detail just what you can do to fix a problem yourself without spending money on parts.

Great story Axle. They are worth a little more than $15 bucks now. In fact, they are a collectors item.

Did you happen to find another resource to help get the cover on and everything properly aligned?
@@michaelglenn2468 finally got it on....it took some manouvering....the trick was to align the pin...thanks
Very nicely done - thanks for this video!
Does anyone know where to buy the modifying kit from springs etc.
eBay has both springs
How do you go about reassembling the right side back on

Fantastic
Does anyone know where to get this said repair kit?
Grey, i dont believe you need a repair kit. Just make a few tweaks as per the video and your tranny should work much better.
eBay has the springs
