How Have Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney Saved Wrexham?

  • On February 9th 2021, Wrexham AFC were taken over by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds. In a deal that shocked the world of football and the people outside it, everyone wondered why two American actors were so heavily invested in a club which finished 19th in the National League the season prior, and how their decision has impacted the future of the club and the lives of their supporters forever.

    One quick mistake. Rob contacted Ryan about advertising at Wrexham, because Ryan had just set up a marketing company. Ryan wanted a prospectus on what he would be advertising for, and Rob sent Ryan a business plan for buying a club. When Ryan saw how well thought out it was, and the potential to make a billion from a small investment, he wanted in.

      You can see in their interviews and attitudes to the players, staff, fans, and local community that they are sincere in their actions. A complete breath of fresh air in the footballing world. A very good example of a club, and community benefiting each other. I'm sure Rob even looked at the season ticket holders history in holding onto those tickets. But whoever is the recruiter is, that is the real hero. The rest was just string it up to dumb luck that this turned out into a fantasy turned real story. Tbh, they aren't out of the woods yet. They are still down 3 to 4million quid on operating costs. If the revenue doesn't go up and soon, they could still be out of business and pulling out. But at least by then the club would be worth tens of millions in brand name recognition.

    • @PyroBrit
      @PyroBrit ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are right! The brand is strong and rising much higher. They have captured the American market as has shown in the increase of American Tourism to the area.
      Their operating costs have to factor in the inflated wage bill for the National League but there will be television right payments from EFL-2 which is worth at least £1.1M so that's a start in the right direction. However, the new players signed for the next season I'm sure will also make a bit of a dent in that wage bill.
      With the new (Kop) stand adding an additional 5,500 seats that could be a full 50% extra income at each home game considering they have a sellout crowd at the moment. Merchandise will pay its way and how much are the sponsors dropping into the mix? I guess sponsorship contracts will be revised to factor in the new league so expect those payments to increase. TikTok would be crazy to drop them right now.
      Look also at the outside community changes. Number of shops closed in Wrexham in 2009 was 6.4%, during the pandemic it was 30% and in 2022 that was 18.9%. With the additional tourism to the area, you can expect many new businesses to open up especially as they have a railway station for easy access.
      My home town of Cirencester has 4.3% of closed shops (2022) but we rely heavily on Tourism to bring the punters in. Wrexham are building history and the whole area is login to benefit. Other towns in North Wales are significantly worse off than Wrexham with some town centres with close to 40% closed shops. The national average is 13.8% (2022) and for Wales it's 16.2% (2022).
      For me it's pure entertainment so I'll continue to watch the docs and youtube vids even though I've not followed a football team properly in my life. I've been to Wembley three times. Once to watch Evel Kneivel fail to jump 22 buses (1975) on a motorbike, a visit with the Scouts to tour the old stadium in the early 80's and lastly to watch my home town of Swindon gain promotion to the Premiership in 1993 against Leicester City. The only game I have ever watched live. Ticket cost was £19 with partial view as the old Wembley roof would obscure one corner of the pitch.

      They sure seem into it for the long haul. That, and they aren't just "buying their way out of the league" like some people claim. The investment they have made in the first team gets all the attention. However, if a team only does that it is unsustainable in the League. By generating global interest in the club, that opens up being able to sell our merchandise globally. Only really the biggest of the Premier League sides have the same capability as us. We have more social media followers than a number of Premier League sides. They have invested in the infrastructure of the club, rebuilding our Academy and our training ground. I think it is a situation that, if they ever chose to leave, the club would be able to continue its success.

    Try and get things right when posting stories like this....
    Hollywood duo Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds surprisingly bought National League outfit Wrexham earlier in the season.
    Speaking to the BBC about the takeover, McElhenney explained that he had fallen in love with Sunderland after watching the Netflix documentary Sunderland ‘Til I Die but because he could not afford to purchase the club, had switched his sights onto the Red Dragons instead:
    I remember the moment. I was sitting on the couch, I was watching Sunderland ‘Til I Die. And I was falling in love with this team and these people and the story.
    In all honesty it was the first time I had understood the concept of promotion and relegation. I didn’t know that that’s how the system worked.
    So I opened my computer and just started Google-searching promotion and relegation. I recognised that if you can get relegated, of course then you can also get promoted.
    Then I looked up how many leagues there are and realising there are five leagues with the National League included… that if you could ostensibly go down, you could go up.
    So even though I couldn’t afford to buy say Liverpool or Sunderland for that matter or Man City, Man U, maybe we could afford to buy a lower-league team and have them ascend through the ranks.
    And maybe there are a lot of clubs that might be in trouble because of Covid. Then I just looked up at her and said, ‘I think I want to buy a football team’.
    It was all within like 20 minutes. She was like, ‘Okay’. And I said, ‘No I think I am going to do this’.

    It’s official they are the best. They beat the record with 110 and a promotion
    Ironically enough the team they beat to get that ended the season at 106. They also beat the record

    That’s awful having TikTok splayed across a jersey man. That’s why i love American football and hockey also. You dont have all that bs advertising on the jerseys. Well plus how physical the games are

    • @sean_43
      @sean_43 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah and in American football, it stops every couple of minutes and cuts to an ad break full of commercials. I'd rather have more uninterrupted action and shirt sponsors than a match that lasts twice the length it should do because of marketing requirements. So yeah, it's no surprise American football never took off outside of America and football is the world's most played and viewed sport.

    Paid ludicrous money to league 1 footballers to drop down 2 leagues and play against part timers who play for clubs who can't get anywhere near to competing financially
    That's how they did it. Nothing special

      For all that money, only just beat Notts County, and even with an ex PL goalie who's let more in than he's saved.😂 Shout out for Macauley Langstaff 41 goals this season for Notts, ex Gateshead player.
