      Trappist beers aren't any special kind of beer, they're simply beers brewed by monks in Trappist monasteries, which is some kind of order of monks or something. Anyway, it's not like trappist beers are any better or worse than other Belgian beers.

    • @elenal7559
      @elenal7559 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      i wouldn't go that far, not everyone likes all possible varieties of Belgian beers
      especially those like Leffe and Pauwel Kwak - strong ales with essentially sweet malty profile
      as for the other "beer countries" - what about Germany and Czechia? as well as Britain and Ireland
      and don't forget that all this "craft revolution" has actually started in the US back in 70s
      what's true about Belgium is that it probably has the richest beer culture with lots of varieties and lots of breweries
      but if you ask me personally - to me a good barelywine or imperial stout is better than any Belgian beer

  • @brianmurphy8811
    @brianmurphy8811 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I believe the point of the wooden structure is to prevent heat transfer from your hand to the beer. It's also why wine glasses have stems, and why you're not supposed to hold the 'globe' of the glass, only the stem.
    "Hoppy" is a reference to hops, which are the green 'buds' that are used in production of many beers. They 'typically' have a floral/citrusy and even piney smell/taste, though, they also produce the 'bitter' flavor in beer (the higher the IBU, which stands for International Bitterness Units, generally, the more hops have been used...though, some beers like Heady Topper from Alchemist have MASSIVE amounts of hops, but isn't super bitter)

    • @AhNee
      @AhNee 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, fresh hops smell like weed, to which it is related.

    • @brianmurphy8811

    • @AhNee
      @AhNee 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, no. Hop yards don't have a strong smell to them, and while my hops in my yard go insane all over, they don't smell strong, either, until I pick the fresh, green hops.

    That proof that the rest of the world drink beer to get drunk and not enjoy it.
    The great diversity of beers in Belgium is accompanied by a rich local beer culture, something that most Belgians are very proud of. Belgium has countless cafés where a large number of beers are poured or tapped. For optimum taste, every beer must be served at its "ideal" temperature (usually between 8 and 15 ° C), with the correct height of the head. Every beer is poured in its own specific glass, a rule that is rarely deviated from.
    Beer culture in Belgium is officially protected by the UN.

      Beer was brewed at between 3 % - 4% in England as a refreshing drink after a day in the coal mines - drunk in pints.
      Beers at 5% - 6% were also brewed but drunk less and mainly on more special occasions.

Back in Napoleon times the riders of the carriage couldn't abandon their horses, so they made a little holder on their carriage so the glass could fit there. Hence the wooding thing you need to drink kwak and hence the name "koetsiersbier" in Belgium or "carriage beer"

    FOR THE GLASS OF THE KWAK:
    Its particularity is to be served in a particular form of glass, the "Cocher glass". (cocher = Person driving a carriage.)
    According to the brewery, this glass would have been created for them, its shape allowing them to hang the glass to the carriage to consume it without descending.

    hey , I had something to say about the beer Kwak. (I use google translate due to the fact that I have taught myself English)
    So the Kwak beer is named after the sound that the beer makes when it returns to the glass. the shape has been designed so that the coachmen can easily handle it in the coach because with a flat bottom it can just fall over. and it is intended that it is drunk without the upright but after drinking is used again. the glasses are so rare that there is a rule all over the world that if you order the beer you have to give your left shoe for theft against the keep. if you return the glass you will get your left shoe back. (have experienced this in south africa)

    Legend goes that, during Napoleon times when coaches were the preferred mode of transportation between cities, a certain innholder by the name of Pauwel Kwak took pity on the coachmen who weren’t allowed to come in for a drink along with their well-off clientele because they had to watch their luggage and the horses. Kwak, designed a glass with a wooden holder that the driver could fasten to the carriage so he too could enjoy a delicious Kwak brew while steering. The special feature was that if you would chug the beer the trapped air would make a distinctive sound and spill the beer all over you. We don't want our coach drivers to be drunk!

  • @florisvanimpe929
    @florisvanimpe929 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did no one explain that the special glass is made like that because when you get to a certain point when drinking it it will induce like a small gulp that hits you in the face, a small 'kwak' in dutch ....

  • @soroh0062255
    @soroh0062255 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The name of the "kwak" beer is actually the sound it makes when air gets trapped in the bulb bit under beer and then pops back out. That's what happened when they spilt it on themselves. The glass is shaped as it is because it was taken by the carriage drivers and hung from the side of his seat (a regular glass would just fall off, but this one stays put).
    Fun fact: the kwak glass is pretty expensive compared to other beer glasses, so pubs often make you give up one of your shoes so you don't run off with it (or in case you break it).

  • @ReconTHG
    @ReconTHG 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Where are Duvel, Orval, some good krieks? Regarding that Kwak glass, there is Dulle Griet bar in Gent where you can get similar glass but 1.2L for something under 12 euro but you need to give your shoe as a "deposit" because if you break the glass it is 90 euro.

    One thing you are doing wrong here guys: you are not using the correct glasses. I am not Belgian myself, but I grew up about 20KM from the border in the Netherlands and we have a fairly similar beer-culture here. Belgian beer-glasses are specifically designed for the beer in question, they channel the aromas, keep the beer at their optimum aeration and fizzyness and are designed to keep the head on the beer as long as possible (yes, head is in fact very important in beer).

  • @hobbes9433
    @hobbes9433 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Pretty unfortunate that the backstories of the beers weren't explained because there is a special reason that Kwak has that kind of glass and the handle. It's based on post carriages their handle that was used to hold the drinks of the driver. And the name "kwak" is the dutch name for the sound it makes when you drink it because of the special bottom of the glass.

    Shannon, you’re a national treasure 🇨🇮
