I bought the set from Walthers several years ago. I quit using the tap jig because it isn't really needed. The drill jig works great with a small hand held electric drill. If I use the tap, it is in a regular tap holder. I have gone through every Athearn car I have had since 1960. All X2F couplers have been replaced by Kadees and screws. I put new trucks on every old car that didn't have RP-25 wheel contour and also Kadees on every car. Some many cars were changed, I finally put a Kadee on the X2F end of my conversion car.
Very well demonstrated. I saw the A-Line owner video (22 Aug 2020) and was concerned the jig was too long preventing the drill and tap from making it thru the pocket. You showed it can be done. Didn't know it has been avail for more than 15 yrs, prefenting me from putting some kits together. No excuse now.
i have found by just very lightly bending the metal covers, they stay on very good. and sometimes just a tiny dot (using a round wooden toothpick) of supper glue holds them on very good (the supper glue can be broken very easily). both ways have held on very well for over 40 years. but yes screws do work best if you like to drill and tap holes, as well as always guaranty a centering of the hole.
Your video is very informing and i really like what I'm seeing and where can I get one of them centering jigs wood it be available at hobby lobby I have a lot of Anthony roundhouse and other name brands and I do my best to equip them with Katie couples... And it can get difficult.....
Well Kadee makes a whole line of couplers and pockets. Kadees might make a book to help you out. This kit shown is really just for making Athearn older boxes able to accept screw. Thanks for your comments and good luck on your Kadees projects !!!!
Very informative great video Paul! Those cabooses are awesome I lov the old southern railway bay window cabooses yellow belly's they called the yellow bay ones they were for local trains and the solid red bay ones were for long haul trains if I'm not mistaken correct me if I'm wrong!
You don't need to tap threads after drilling; either a 2-56 machine screw or same size wood screw will create its own threads in the soft plastic. Done it a million times. You may also want to check for vertical play; most Athearn boxes are too sloppy, causing coupler droop. Use shim washers under coupler to correct.
