Thank for the video Mike, much appreciated! I set openvpn up and worked well however I don't have a static ip so I gather this limits it, is there a way around this? Any help would be appreciated.
This can be an issue but as most ISPs don’t change much I would wait and see. If it becomes an issue you can use a Dynamic DNS service. I have a dynamic up and mine has not changed
I set up ovpn on my qnap nas with my laptop, I got the green connection icon but I don't show up as connected in the nas overview as well as on nas users also on my android phone it keep showing error and something about an android key chain and certificates. Any help would be useful P.S I am a noob👍
You may not show up as a user depending on how you set up your NAS but you should show as an online user. I would try two things, first, make sure you are testing outside your home network and not connected to your wifi as it will not work correctly when on your lan. Second, make sure that in the config screen, you have selected "Use as the default gateway for remote devices" checked. And lastly, double-check your port forward, there may be an issue with how that is set up. Once you have your laptop setup and working, email the same OPVN file to your phone with the OpenVPN app and it should work. Hope that helps.
Hi Mike. Question: Soon I'll buy 2 X 12 TB Iron Wolf's to replace existing 4 TB HD's in my existing QNAP TS-251+ NAS ... and I'm buying a 12 TB Seagate External HD to replace almost full 4 TB USB drive I use as my NAS backup. Should I upgrade HD's in NAS 1st? ... then add new 12 TB Ext. HD as backup and do full backup job (~ 3.5 TB) onto it? 1st backup will be big and might take a long time? ... is this correct procedure/order of operations? I plan to buy the new QNAP 464 (rumor on NASCompares site). It may not be released for 6 months or more but I'm running out of room on my 4 TB drives. I'll move the 12 TB Iron Wolf's and 12 TB Ext backup HD to the new QNAP 464. Waiting for 464 as it will have 4K 60FPS I need on HDMI port to TV.
Hi Don. I would do the 12T in the NAS first so that you have a current backup while you are doing the upgrade. The drive upgrade should be fairly smooth but it would be better to have the backup handy just in case. Once you have the new drives, then do a new backup (not affecting the old one) and keep the original 4T around until you have some time on the new drives. Drive failures historically happy early in the game on new drives. As for the 464, it looks really interesting and I will also look at that unit when it come out. Good choice. As there is not much information out on this unit, beware that you may not be able to do a direct upgrade of your NAS and may have to copy data from your backup to the new NAS which means new drives or the willingness to reformat your current drives leaving you with only a backup. There is a compatibility section on the QNAP site that you will want to check. It would be easier and safer to just move the drives over to the NAS as long as the 464 is direct upgrade compatible with your 251. Good luck and keep me posted.
@@MikeFaucher Thx Mike. Always appreciate your advice. Idea: I was working with the latest QNAP O/S update and it asks you to create a new ID other than 'admin'. I was able to ... but somehow it is not categorized as an "administrator". I would delete it and try again but the system warns it will delete the new ID and "all the data" for it. I'm not sure what they mean by "all the data" but I can't risk my Data so I've just left it there. Pls consider doing a small video (3 - 5 mins?) on how to handle ID's both as a System Admin issue and as a 'security' issue. And doing small, fast videos might be an interesting additional format for your channel?
@@donsylvester5275 I will add it to my list. Need to verify it on QTS but typically the data deletion is for that user only not the entire NAS. I will do some testing a put together a short video. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@MikeFaucher Brilliant. I watch "Pal2Tech" videos to learn more about my Fuji XT-3 camera. He does "Fast Friday" which are limited to 5 mins. I see others doing the same thing. Also: I often send "Share Links" to friends so they can see/download pics I took of us out together on the boat or at a party or such. I figured out to choose the "Smart Share" option but you might want to do a 5 minute on the subject of "Sharing Links" too? BTW, I think Smart Share requires MyQNAPCloud be enabled which you shut off for security.
@@donsylvester5275 Thanks Don. Have not tried the smart share but will look into options. Thanks for the suggestion on the short format, I will definitely give it a try.
Hard to say as it could be many things however a couple of things come to mind. Are you accessing the synology web interface using the IP? IF not try that. If you are trying to access files on the Synology you will have to do it from the file browser on the client system. The fact that you can access any device tells me you are connected but either the account you are using does not have permissions, or you may be trying the device name instead of the IP address.
@@ms7165 Sorry but without seeing the actually seeing your configuring and knowing how you have it set up I do not have much to go on. I would suggest going back through the setup in detail to see if anything was missed. sorry I could not provide more help.
Hi Mike. I got OpenVPN to connect to my QNAP but can't access any folders on my NAS. I've tried using the IP address of the NAS on file explorer (\\server IP\work folder etc) but won't see it. Is there a specific way of writing out the IP address?
Make sure that you have selected it as the gateway, you are logging in with the same user that was created on the NAS, and make sure the firewall rule is correct. It sounds like a permissions/user issue.
@Mike Faucher yea i understand but the video seemed like it explained the benefits of openvpn instead of how to use it. Nice explanation of the benefits though 👍
