    2:38:54 This was when Mike blew his only real chance to be with Diedre and he hasn't got a clue that he has. Deep down he was probably more interested in taking Ken's girl who o remember had a regular spot as Cowley's secretary in The Professionals.

      Wow well spotted - I knew I'd seen that actress before! I think she must have got a lot of work on big TV shows at this time, as she's a very familiar face to me (I watched a lot of telly as a kid!)
      I'm slightly baffled why she was cast for this, as not only can she not act (as wooden as Pinnochio), she isn't really the sexy, femme fatale type she's supposed to be!

      Mike had a narrow escape… Better off without Dreary Deirdre… he could do far better… enjoy himself with a different dolly bird every few months… Deirdre was nowt but a user deep down… shelved her Tracey off to anyone who’s look after while she was swanning about….

      God me too - was Deirdre out of her mind?! I reckon those heavy specs must have strained her brain - choosing a life with boring Ken and his flatulent Uncle Albert, over sexy Mike and his slick bachelor pad. It's a no-brainer!

      @glamdolly30 3 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      @@colinjennings3661 According to Coronation Street producer Bill Podmore, Fred Feast shared more than just his name with Fred Gee. He was more like the character, than even Fred Gee was - and far more uncouth!
      Apparently one of Fred's favourite tricks was to do a silent fart just after 'action' was called on a scene behind the bar, so that poor Bet, Betty or Annie had to endure the terrible smell and keep acting, until the scene was finished.
      He left the show under a cloud because he basically went without giving notice. He said he was fed up with all the big storylines the writers kept giving him, capitalizing on Fred's comedic strengths. Bill Podmore was angry that he had never mentioned it or asked them to ease up on him - he just upped and left.
      This left the writers with a big headache - the Rovers was the backbone of the show, and the cast members who worked there had their scripts written well in advance. Fred's sudden departure meant many weeks of scripts had to be drastically re written.
      Podmore was angrier still when Fred sold negative stories on his co-stars to the tabloids, rudely saying if he'd stayed in the show any longer he'd have ended up "Another Coronation Street cabbage" who could hardly deliver his lines - regarded as a sly dig at the actors who played Bert Tilsley, Uncle Albert and Stan Ogden, who all suffered ill health and had recently died.
      A few years later, Bill Podmore was holidaying in Jersey with his teenage children. He'd heard rumours that Fred Feast was there, so asked his kids to keep a look out for him and warn him if they saw him, as he did not want a reunion!
      Unfortunately he bumped into Fred on the street one day, before he could dodge him. Fred rushed over and greeted him warmly, like a long lost friend. After some polite small talk, Fred said to him:
      "Are you going to ask me then?" Baffled, Podmore replied:
      "Ask you what?" Quick as a flash, Fred said:
      "Ask me back on the show?"
      "In your dreams!" said Bill.
      "Fair enough" said Fred, and walked off.
      He did a fair amount of TV and movie work after leaving the Street, including a long running role in 'All Creatures Great and Small' and the Michael Caine movie 'Little Voice'. He also popped up as the barman in a Liz Dawn comedy video, a celebrity party based at her real home (it's on TH-cam and it's surprisingly good!)
      Fred Feast died of abdominal cancer on 25th June 1999, aged 69. Coincidentally his former co-star Brian Mosley, who played Alf Roberts, died on 9th February of that same year, aged 67.

      When she first joined the show in the early 'seventies she was definitely regarded as a 'totty' character, and all the eligible men were after her! It's a shame those horrendous welder-style glasses didn't do her any favours!

      And I think that’s exactly what this show portrayed in those days. Someone commented on a story on Coronation Street on MailOnline that times had changed, and that’s why the program was different these days. But it’s more than that. I think the old Corrie portrayed life as it was then it was hard. There was no Work, and it portrayed real people and real problems , relationship issues etc without going into rape and murder, and all of those horrible gory things that we really don’t need to see. The current coronation Street nowadays is awful. I just can’t watch it

      Awww, and how tragic that Anne Kirkbride, who was 19 years younger than Johnny Briggs, died first aged just 60. Johnny made it to 85 - and William Roache (Ken Barlow), is still going strong aged 88, again ironic when Ken and Deirdre would have meaningful conversations about the age difference between them and the 'fact' he would die first.

      Yes to an extent though there was stuff like potatoes and chops or a nice bit of fish on the menu as well but in general there wasnt much choice and a lot of people wernt very adventurous back then so stuff was basically on a rotational basis - I never had a pizza till i left home - or oven chips - they were always made in the chip pan

    1:16:38 - Sonia, the beauty therapist, asks Ken Barlow if he's surprised that "an attractive girl like me" hasn't got a boyfriend. He doesn't look very surprised, and neither am I. Sonia's strident voice and abrasive personality would send most men - with the exception of the inveterate womanisers (take note, Mr. Baldwin) and the most desperate - running for cover. Yet another unappealing female of Corrie history with a voice to make you hit the mute button - and we don't even have to wait a full decade before hideous Kimberley Taylor arrives.

    • @glamdolly30
      @glamdolly30 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Gawd I agree, the casting was seriously 'off' with a lot of the guest characters, and Sonia was particularly ghastly. I don't know how she got work - the woman couldn't act! And she wasn't exactly the glamorous type she was supposed to be either. I bet every other actress up for the role was better than her!
