I can take some reharmonization, but not really on this tune and definitely not on "It's about to be writ again..." That bass note is key to the tension of the this passage. Please do right by David Bowie. This classic song deserves to be played with the right harmonies.

Chris is working with the singers and this really isn't about him or Bowie, at this specific performance. That's what great singers, musicians and writers are able to do, and perhaps explains in part why they are great.
As a musician, I will say that music is not just about the melody. The way the bass line interacts with the melody and what note of a chord is chosen for the bass line is integral to a song. Life On Mars is Life On Mars precisely because of the notes David Bowie chose in his bass line. How the song moves from one harmony to the next and the color of the emotion that accompanies the lyric is driven by the bass progression. When you lose that, you lose the heart of this song. To ignore that, or not to understand and stay true to the harmony does disservice to this song.
