Nice stoves! A couple of things I noticed. 1. Moving the lighting lever does not clean the tip. The valve does that. 2. By just opening the main valve slightly, you are completely defeating the instant lighting feature and that causes raw fuel to pool in the burner. Pump it up, set it to light, and open the valve AT LEAST 2 FULL TURNS(some older manuals say open it as far as it will go, either way works fine) to get more air into the generator. Babying that main valve is THE TOP issue most folks have lighting Coleman stoves. They see a little flare and it scares them into throttling the valve down too far. I have left many comments on many videos explaining how the instant light feature works. And done properly, it works well. You want lots of pressure in the tank(some instructions say 25-35 pumps, others say 35-50 pumps. The fuller the tank, the less you have to pump) to atomize the fuel better for faster lighting and warm up. Here is a video I did years ago. It is from my old account that I had to abandon after my phone, laptop, and truck were stolen. th-cam.com/video/hgRkf4i0awo/w-d-xo.html Give it a try and let me know what you think.
I recently got a Coleman 500. The 502 was easy to use, but it's much easier to control the heat. I'm going to get rid of my 508A and use this as my main stove.
That lever is not the Tip Cleaner it’s Actually what moves the air stem inside the fuel air tube down in the tank and the generator needle is screwed into the valve knob itself like the 2 burner Coleman stoves the more you unscrew it the more the needle comes out of the jet orifice in the end of the generator 🙂 just leave that lever on light open valve knob just lil bit more to light once fuel is lit and starts Vaporizing Properly then move that lil lever to burn position then Opens your valve knob all the way I hope this helps 🙂
I've got a 1947 500A, mine does the same with the fuel pooling where the generator enters. I always heat the generator before lighting it. I use it with a 505 pocket 2 every time I go camping. Great video.
I believe the difference in grill shapes are (green) Round is the American/Commercial model and the (Chrome) Star shaped grill is actually the "Canadian" model ...so the arms to support a wind screen makes total sense.
From where I can get this kind of stove .I am interested .it is very good for camping. I like the green one.is it available in Walmart or any other shopping center .thanks
9:10 I think this should be done only when the stove has cooled down, and is safe to touch. I own a 533 for camping & usually leave it for several minutes after shutting it off, before venting the cap...
I have a nickel model 500 as well as a Coleman GI model. I have a 3th stove (model unk) that looks a cross between these 2, looks similar to the GI, just shorter. Stores inside the pot and cup. Thanks for sharing.
You're right, the 500A had the large regular size three piece cap with the hole in the side. The Coleman company changed it in 1963 to a large regular size three piece cap with 4 groves cut into the threads because of a lawsuit. Then changed to a one piece cap in 1970.
Great video. I have a 60 500a, just bought and its very hard to light. It lights then the flame goes out like running out of gas but still has pressure. Is there something that could be blocking the gas?
Well, if you tried preheating the generator it could mean the generator needs to be serviced. The tube that goes across the top could be gummed up, or the orifice of the generator could be clogged up a little bit.

I just picked up a 1947 model 500 at a garage sale for $10, super excited.
@SwampRatNation good deal!

you have two very nice examples of the 500 variety, thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks!! Very happy with these. They cook very well.

Thanks. Always great info. 1960 is my birth year. Still keeping an eye out for a stove or lantern to buy someday 😀
Good luck!!
Me too.
I never thought I'd be that guy watching videos about old Coleman stoves and lanterns I want to collect but here I am lol
They are fun!
Sure are!

If the fuel is pooling too much it might be time to clean the generator. The stove generators are easier to service.
Thanks for sharing. What fuel do these burn ?

Can never be too safe. I've never had an issue in my case.

Good video. Single piece caps weren’t introductory until 1970.

On the nickel, whats with the two bits of steel? Looks like a reinforcement of some kind?

Yes probably so, the whole thing needs to be cleaned really. I just bought it and its very dirty.
@@gregoryleblanc6756 the cleaner the better!
@@crookedlantern3810 Yes sir. Thank you.
Check you fuel cap for pressure leaks.. Check Valve may need cleaning or replacing as well.
Excellent thank you
