  • Parkinson's and exercise to manage symptoms go hand-in-hand. Exercise needs to be purposeful, structured, repetitive and planned and it is important to find an exercise program that works for you in collaboration with a health professional, Professor David Blacker explains.

Thank you, Dr Blacker, for using your expertise and experience with PD to help others. The belief that physical exercise slows down the progression of the disease is my main motivator. Legends Academy on Walcott Street do boxing for Parkinson's too. Jay Twomey is an excellent young coach there.

Really amazing talk. Wish I’d found it just after my diagnosis last year. I love his idea of how the common misconception of the disease can become a self prophesising reality. I’ve thrown myself into exercise and refuse to end up like a hunched over old man.
I am very interested in the throes of exercise that are beneficial and currently do a variety because it stops me getting bored. I hate gyms so walk, run, cycle, box, dance and practice tai chi. No physio, as not considered ill enough to get it on the nhs.
One area where there is very little research is working with Parkinson’s (even less than women).
    Pass my thanks onto David.

Love this unique presentation from an articulate clinician/patient. I use exercise to treat Parkinson’s and believe it’s an immensely beneficial adjunct to medication in terms of function, mood and quality of life!
    Thanks Prof
