I have the Osmo 1 and GP 9 and I always trust the Osmo 1 can't say the same for the GP. I also have an older GP that never had issues and a mic port without the crazy expensive Mod they sell now. GoPro doesn't seem to want to fix the problems "hey just buy our new model". Thanks for the video !!
I have a couple GP 9. Love the vid quality, but with the media mod, they are a pain. Also GP seems to have a very poor rep for responding to customers.
I'm still rocking the Osmo Action 1 (in fact, I have two of them) and only recently added to my setup with an Insta360 X3 for B-roll. GoPro doesn't even factor in to decision making for me anymore after reading far too many reviews from people having issues with them. The OA 4 looks like it'll be my next primary vlog camera if the originals ever stop working for me.
So on the 20th November DJI will launch a mic adapter and also add a new firmware especially for motorcycles. I am guessing more gain control and what could just make them then the best action camera for helmet. What i love as i have multiple bikes and multiple helmets is i don’t have to adjust the angle for each bike on the camera as its a magnetic mount. Cant wait to text the new mic adapter and the new firmware
I agree about the battery with the media mod. A couple evenings ago I was out riding gravel with my Hero 10. Was about 50 degrees. Was using the regular Blue battery and the camera shut down. Got a message saying shut down due to low battery level. Camera showed 67% charge left . Put in the Enduro battery and finished. I have a 5, a 10 and a Max and battery life is a problem on all of them. I do use the Volta when the camera is mounted on the bike. That works quite well.
When researching GP or DJI Action 3, I ended up with the DJI and haven't regretted it. So easy to turn off/on recording while on the go. Saw enough people with overheating issues with the GP that going with the DJI was a no brainer. Only issues I could find with the DJI is over exposure in some situations. But for my needs, I didn't really care. Didn't really see that in any of your videos with the 4.
This was a SUPER USEFUL video, Thank you!! I am going to upgrade my GoPro Hero8 next month and had been wondering about the DJI. I was in the market for a new drone and had not known about the Osmo (I live in a bubble evidently!!). As I am going to use it for similar purposes to you, when I saw your comparision I knew you would cover things that pertained to me and would help me make a smart decision... I was right :) You did, and you did :) Thank you again!!
I, unfortunately, am heavily invested in the GoPro ecosystem. However….yet again, I found myself out yesterday filming for a video and the GoPro freezes not once but three times that day thus resulting in loosing “the moment” and one of those moments was an epic log crossing by a friend that will now never be seen. I ABSOLUTELY HATE my GoPros and the lack of reliability! I’m saving my pennies to go to DJI but with requiring 3 cameras plus mounts etc…it may be awhile. Plus you mentioned battery life: I record at 4K 60 and with on/off filming I rarely get more than 45 minutes and that’s with the GoPro adventure batteries or whatever they call them. My two cents: GoPro DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE CONSUMER. All they care about is getting the next camera out.
@@DorkintheRoad no they aren’t. If only DJI would take pitty on me, a hardworking up and coming Canadian TH-camr, and sponsor the channel by sending some cameras my way. Hey, we all can dream right? 🤣👍🏻
The Media Mod is truly terrible. I use the mic adapter instead and basically have it zip tied to the GoPro. Way easier to change the batteries than with the stupid Media Mod, and it's much smaller and lighter. I'm too deep into the GoPro ecosystem at this point (3 GoPros, 10 batteries, basically every mount and accessory ever) to change to the Osmo, but that doesn't mean I have to feel good about it. GoPros suck.
Thanks for this review. I've been using my gopro 8 and am so sick of the overheating and audio issues. My next camera will be an Osmo or another Insta. Great review.
I am still using my 2 DJI action 1’s to good effect, but I run 1080 60fps currently. Just tried them on a helmet cam this fall without an external mic, but have yet to edit the footage to check the audio. I may consider upgrading to the 4, but I have to see if I end up using the cameras much on my bike to justify the cost first. And with winter here from Oct-April in interior Alaska, my riding season is short. Thanks for the interesting comparison though.
I agree with you wholeheartedly about the GoPro Media Mod. It's poorly designed and makes changing the battery and memory card slow and awkward. However, there are alternatives. I use the Ulanzi G9-4 cage ($18) plus the GoPro Mic Adapter for my Hero 9. Both work great. The G9-4 is lightweight and well designed. The side door pops right open to provide easy access to the battery and memory card. And it has up to two cold shoe mounts for an external microphone and other accessories. It also allows for the addition of any kind of filter. I also agree with you that the GoPro finger mount can be awkward, particularly when combined with the Media Mod. But I don't use the finger mount either. I mount my GoPro with GoPro's buckle mount quick release system. Using those, the GoPro clicks into place quickly and can be removed almost as quickly.
Thanks for the comparative video! You can reverse the extension arm for the gopro so it screws from the other way.I still use 3x osmo action 1 cameras but want to upgrade!
Not too far invested into the gopro ecosystem and you’ve convinced me! Did DJI give you a promo code with the sponsor? And what editing software do you use for content creation? Love the videos!
Agree completely on picture quality. I film at 1080P and 60FPS because quality wise no one can tell I'm not shooting at 4k, and the 60FPS gives the crispness you need when moving fast. The only reason I have stayed with GoPro is the color/dynamic range is better.
I switched to 4k because TH-cam's 4k codec has a higher bitrate and you don't get all the screen fuzziness when moving through detailed environments at high speeds. It's definitely made a difference, but I had to upgrade my PC to edit 4k ;)
GoPro is like Garmin; they’ve been the 800lb gorilla for so long they don’t bother to listen to their customers fully or leverage any cutting edge technology.
At Tacos Y Motos, we use GoPro Hero 10s. We each have a helmet chin mount. And a second for handlebar reverse POV, as well as other bike angles. We DON'T use the Media Mod. I don't know why anyone would. For the helmet chin mount we use the Mic Adapter affixed to the helmet, and that plugs directly in with a USB Pass Through Door. For power we have 8,000khw/h power banks that fit in a chest pocket (they're the size of a business card) and that plugs into the Mic Adapter USB-C port. We get over 8 hours with the power bank and 1 Enduro battery. No swapping batteries anymore (we used to have to use 6+ batteries to get a full day of recording, while charging the dead ones in the top case for the next day). We never need to make adjustments to settings because we've dialed it in already. We use a fixed shutter speed and frame rate, and use ND filters to adjust exposure as needed. If we do need to access the settings screen, we use the app on our phone. Since our phone is mounted on our handlebars, it's much easier to use that than to futz around with the camera. I'd never use a front touch screen even if we had it. In fact, I don't even care for the front screen at all. We don't have overheating issues (maybe it's because we don't use the Media Mod). But even when we ride in the desert we don't have issues with that. I do wish GoPro would add a line/gain adjustment. That to me is the weakest point. We have to use an attenuator cable to drop from Line to Mic level. Not the end of the world. But, yeah... really wish GoPro would put some thought into that. And we've never had problems with losing audio. I've heard the 9 was a pretty bad camera. So maybe the audio issues were isolated to that model. End of the day, we're happy with GoPro. That's why we bought the 2nd Hero 10s. Plus they were only around $200 at Costco. Like you, we're creating TH-cam content. So anything we do is going to be a custom solution with lots of mods beyond the "out of box experience." Just wanted to drop a line and let you know there are better GoPro setups. I respect your choice to go DJI (I have a DJI drone and mics, and they're great products). But on the GoPro side if you ditched the Media Mod and relied on your phone for the settings, you'd solve your pain points, and have a much more pleasurable experience.
You should have mentioned the HDR mode and the Max Lens 2.0 in order to make a really "honest" review. I've been in a love/hate relationship with Gopro since Hero 7 (I got stuck with the Hero 3+ before, it took me 4 or 5 gens of Heroes to update my trusty 3+). I just bought the Hero 12 with Max Lens 2.0 and the image processing is out of this world, it works like a charm in high contrast situations. I had the 11 for few months, my mistake was buying it 2 months before the release of H12, I should be more informed, and reliability and battery life is way superior over 9 and 10. The biggest issue I had in the past few years was that the H10 in the media mod, didn't recognize the external mic. That's why I kept the H9 for motovlogging. I know it's annoying to spend more money in accesories to get better audio, protection, etc, but Hey! We ride dual sporters that doesn't have a bash plate from factory. Regarding audio, I was really excited about the bluetooth capabilities of the H12, it worked great with my ol" Cardo G9, but the audio was so clean that I couldn't listen to engine and wind. It was like a "voice over" video, and it was kinda disappointing but I don't blame Gopro for that, it's the intercom doing its job with sound processing. Sincerely, I don't find annoying to remove media mod for battery and memory changes, if you are careful enough, this shouldn't be an issue, indeed the H11 in the media mod can work with a external USB power source without the battery installed (Haven't tested this on the H12). The real irritating thing here is to use this like an excuse to bash a great piece of digital gear because you are paid by the competition. I'm watching and learning from your content since few years now, don't be that guy that sells his soul to a brand for a handfull of dollars. 🫶
yeah, just changed batteries yesterday. Hard to reach (with fingers) screw, the remove media mod is a pain. Why don't hey just have mounts on the media mod, not the GoPro mounts passing through? then you could just open the mediaMod door and slide the camera out? In short, the MediaMod is the problem, but the only solution for the mic stuff. catch 22. They definitely need to evolve, or will find themselves in the land of Gateway computers.
Actually been shopping for an action camera for 2 purposes. Motorcycle camera and my electronics shop (making repair videos). The battle is between insta 360 and the Osmo. My biggest requirements is that I only use Linux on all my computers and laptops and want a camera that will support that.
Commenting as I watch : I'm deep in the GP ecosystem as you say, but the jokes on GP. I use Hero 7 Black's that I buy second hand from a AV rental company. I have 3 of them (helmet/bars/front wheel) and a Hero 8 Black with media mod which uses the same batteries as the 7. Never had freezing problems, never bought one new 😂 If I had an exit for my GP kit, I would probably use the DJI for ease of use.
Oh I wish you would’ve gone a little deeper on the mic setup. I have the DJI and that’s been a challenge. Another video per chance, or would you elaborate on your DJI mic setup?
Does the Action 4 have the same issue as the insta 360 oneRS where there are several second that it does not record when saving/splitting a recording at the file limit size? For example my one RS will stop recording at about 30 minutes and save the file, then start a new file. During that time there is a 15-30 second gap in the recoding that makes for hard transitions when editing videos together for longer rides.
You nailed it. GoPro only wants video of people doing Extreme stunts with club music blasting over the video. It drives me crazy that they can’t get audio correct. I hear the new 12 has Bluetooth audio but I haven’t seen any videos of it connected to something like the Sena audio systems. I tried, I really did but I couldn’t get consistent audio from my GoPro and its media mod. Thus I never uploaded or tried any longer to upload riding videos. I get so frustrated with nonsense and poor engineering that I just don’t bother. I was thinking of trying next year with a Osmo. I can’t stand wasting money and darn good money on bad investments and the GoPro always turns out to be a bad one. Next year, I’ll try it. Starting in March when I ride down to Daytona for my yearly bike week pilgrimage. Riding is therapy to me and when I ride my mind clears and there’s so much I’d love to say but I end up talking to myself and I’m wanting to share some of my thoughts on TH-cam. Especially some of the crazy stuff that can happen while riding on/off the road. Ugh. I need to just start making videos again. Believe it or not, back in like 2006 or 2005 when TH-cam started I use to have another channel that I uploaded track day and other riding video too. Then I just stopped after a couple years. I got to get back to posting stuff.
I still use the OSMO 1. I bike mount mine, and plug it in (without a battery in it) so I never have to worry about the battery. Can you plug in and run the OSMO 4 as well?
I'm currently using the GP Hero 10 with media mod. And the battery life for me was also a pain. But i " fixxed " this by removing the battery and attaching a powerbank ( goes in my inner vest pocket). So no more switching batteries every 20 minutes. With that setup i can go a couple hours , not changing batteries. The attachement to the mount is still a small pain but i use a longer " screw " so i can handle them easily. great video again!
Nice comparison. I run a Hero 9, and with the 12, neither GoPro nor DJI has the built in GPS which I use all the time to show speed, track, etc. Which you can see on my channel. Have you tried the DJI remote with GPS?
I've been back and forth on these brands the past few months. Sold the Hero 11 to get the OA3 mostly because of GoPro reliability issues. Unfortunately the OA3 had a faulty lens and had to be replaced. I also spent 2k on a new laptop and editing program to be able to edit the new HEVC files both the latest cameras produce. I lost the replacement OA3 on a ride so I picked up the OA4, 2nd DJI purchase and 2nd issue, my editor won't play the OA4 files smoothly. So, reluctantly I'm back with the Hero 12. A few things to note: the DJI has no return policy, once you buy it, you are stuck with it (unless you purchase from Amazon, they take anything back) also, a lot of my viewers complained the DJI had a much worse fisheye effect than the GP.
Nice comparison, however, in your last camera comparison you chose the insta360 one rs as best of the bunch. Why is it not included in the review this time? I have been using the one rs this riding season and couldn't be happier.
This is good stuff! I have no cameras, and will never be a content creator. I may decide to get videos while riding at some point though, and seeing different takes, especially from non-photographers is great! Does OSMO make a 360 camera?
I've been working my way OUT of the GoPro ecosystem. I made the swap to Insta360 OneRS w/ and w/o the 360 lens and have been really pleased. My only draw back to their setup is the lack of waterproofing with the mic adapter installed.
What I do with my GoPro10 is squeeze the clip to pull the camera off my helmet. Then it's easier to get to the screw, etc. Yes, it's still a pain, especially due to the Media Mod. I think the GoPro has a better looking image. The difference isn't huge, but I notice the difference. I use a ZGCine powerbank charger that can charge my Hero7 and Hero10 batteries while I ride. When my batteries get low or die, I just swap em out and by the time I need new ones (I tend to leave the camera recording more than I should), the ZGCine has charged them back up. The ZG's one flaw is the USB-C port on the back is fussy. Many cables don't fit well. And it won't charge if the connects doesn't fit well. I use top grade cables, so the problem is the jack ZGCine used. I still love it, though. The clip on mount on the Osmo is da shizznit. Add in not needing the media mod and that makes using the camera much easier. I don't care about a front touch screen, those are tiny and I've never needed it. I set up my camera long ago and don't change the settings. I like that the Hero10 does 5.7k because that gives me crop room if I want to zoom in editing. I ride in the rain sometimes when I'm on multi day rides and the GoPro MediaMod has handled all day rain reasonably well (slightly crackly audio now and then), so I'd be worried about that some with the Osmo. I have a DJI Drone and just got the Pocket3, so it's not like I'm anti-DJI in the least. They make great products. Insta360 and GoPro could learn alot from DJI just on how to handle customer service if not design as well. I'm in no rush to buy new action cameras, but when I need one, I'll definitely be considering a DJI.
GoPro are just full of awful design decisions. One thing you didn't mention is HDR on the Hero 12. It's a game changer for motorcycle content because it stops high contrast environments from getting over exposed.
I do mostly short commuter rides, under an hour each way and just want something to use as a "dash cam". How does it mount to the helmet and could I mount it on the handlebars or would that vibrate too much?
Honestly this is probably too much camera for a dash cam. You'd be fine with a Drift with the huge battery life. Mount it, plug it in, and set it up to loop.
Considering the hash environments (E.g., high vibration, high impact) action cameras are designed for. I would think that the solid secure design of the GoPro mount would be much more rigid, vs the quick change conveyance of DJI's magnetic mount. That DJI mount doesn't look very secure to me.
I feel that GoPro have become complacent, and if the don't change soon DJI, (and others coming from behind) will take over the market by listening to the customers.
I had the Osmo Action 1 and was looking for another camera. I bought the GP12 BECAUSE I was having microphone problems with the Action 1, to the extent that voice over was unusable. The GP12 has bluetooth voice recording so I can use the Sena 50S on my helmet which to me, is THE game changer. Then, without the Media Mod the GP12 is smaller, easier to change batteries and overall easier to use. However, as we have winter here I haven't been able to fully test my setup so I'm assuming that things will work as advertised.
Battery life is far superior. Everything else is pretty similar. I like them both but not swapping batteries or running an external battery pack is very nice.
Had gopros up til hero 8 then switched to osmo. I own their drones and i know how reliable they are. i still own the osmo action and still love it. Just remember to buy oem batteries because i bought aftermarket jumped into water and the seal was messed up and i didnt know til after. I put the osmo in rice and shes still running!!

The real irritating thing here is to use this like an excuse to bash a great piece of digital gear because you are paid by the competition. I'm watching and learning from your content since few years now, don't be that guy that sells his soul to a brand for a handfull of dollars. 🫶
Ok you did this one. How about Osmo vs insta360 One RS
Thanks!
yeah, just changed batteries yesterday.
Never had freezing problems, never bought one new 😂
If I had an exit for my GP kit, I would probably use the DJI for ease of use.
Great information! Sounds like Osmo FTW.
some good information
its not fear to use medium case to change the butry with go pro its just extension
Oh I wish you would’ve gone a little deeper on the mic setup. I have the DJI and that’s been a challenge. Another video per chance, or would you elaborate on your DJI mic setup?
It's just a Boya BY-K4 with a 90 degree USB-C adapter into a Purple Panda mic.
should do one with the 360
Seems like the GP 12 is a step backwards from the 7 and 8.
I've seen a TH-cam video showing the SabineTek SmartMike+ working well with GP 12
Great honest comparison!
HOLY SMOKES. I'm going to order the DJI camera!
Commenting as I watch : Battery swap on dji impressive
Only thing that really mattered to me was the battery life, going with this over a gopro.
Nice comparison. I run a Hero 9, and with the 12, neither GoPro nor DJI has the built in GPS which I use all the time to show speed, track, etc. Which you can see on my channel. Have you tried the DJI remote with GPS?
Curious why you need the media mod 🤔
Thanks, what kind of mounts do you use on the helmets.
Could you please share which chin mount do you use?
How are you getting audio into the helmet. Sorry new to all this .
Which one of those two helmets do you like the best though??? I have a Shoei Hornet X2 coming in the mail soon 🧐
What helmet mount are you using for the osmo?
Does this replace your insta360 one rs cameras now?
What brand helmet is the black one?
Just wondering how they get mounted to the helmet, is there a special mount, glue or duct tape?
Wondering same thing 🤔
Does the osmo have auto focus issues? That's what I've heard.
Never had an issue
I like my Dji action3 as its easy to use , not a video creator , like mine Alain & Yellow
GoPro are just full of awful design decisions. One thing you didn't mention is HDR on the Hero 12. It's a game changer for motorcycle content because it stops high contrast environments from getting over exposed.
Osmo 4 Bro! ❤👍👍👍👌
Thank you.
@dorkintheroad I recall a past video where you were migrating to Insta360. Have you abandoned Insta360 or now only use it for 360 footage?
Considering the hash environments (E.g., high vibration, high impact) action cameras are designed for. I would think that the solid secure design of the GoPro mount would be much more rigid, vs the quick change conveyance of DJI's magnetic mount. That DJI mount doesn't look very secure to me.
I feel that GoPro have become complacent, and if the don't change soon DJI, (and others coming from behind) will take over the market by listening to the customers.
Very nice review.
I've actually got that Sena adapter and will be testing it out soon.
How many hours of video can you store in a 128gb card?
It all depends on what quality and frame rate you shoot video at.
@@deltabravo1257 Right, I should have specified--1080p.
One overheats and crashes more. Have a guess to which one. Hint , It's not the American one.
My Osmo hasn't overheated or crashed one time. My GoPros do it all the time.
@@DorkintheRoad So who is correct? 🤷♂️
Just asking because I am interested in purchasing one.
Is the OSMO better than the Insta360 one RS ?
Battery life is far superior. Everything else is pretty similar. I like them both but not swapping batteries or running an external battery pack is very nice.
Welp choice is clear now. DJI take my money
I don't record, but if I did GoPro would be my last option.
You can remove the gopro from the media mod without removing the media mod from your helmet.
How? The built-in mount blocks it from sliding off
@@DorkintheRoad oh wait, you are right, my mistake.
Oh interesting. Good tip on the batteries.
