I played this all the time as a kid, and I have to say, this is definitely one of the greatest tie-in games of all time. The first level is still my favorite.
Firstly thanks so much, holy shit. Forgot this was a thing people can do. 💜 Secondly yeah I am upset that I kinda missed it growing up. Really wish I'd had the chance to play it through fresh, childhood eyes but oh well. Glad I've finally got to see what all the fuss is about. Love the first level but the Neighborhood with the big tree climb might still be my fav level!
I 100% this game roughly once a year. It's somewhat of a comfort game for me. It was also one of the first games I have I ever played. The OST is stuck in my head.
I loved this game as a kid and still do today after replaying it awhile back on PS4. Going from this to the Toy Story world in Kingdom Hearts 3, it makes me think that the Toy Story 2 game is set in Kingdom Hearts universe where the Toy Story world was split into two which would explain why there are no people and why Buzz's laser actually fires lasers
As someone who recently beat Toy Story 2, I never thought about the idea of having a Frogger like level with the traffic cone scene & having a Woody on Bullseye level a la Crash hog ride levels. Those are brilliant level ideas. Definitely agree with ya on the bosses/boss choices. My least favorite part of the game was the camera. Was one of the most jank cameras I've dealt with in a 3D Platformer/Collect-a-Thon
This game and Spider-man 2 are the goats of licensed movie tie in games. The devs of this game are absolutely based for the level of difficulty in platforming they put in this game that’s advertised for kids lol.
Really appreciate the honest takes on the parts that bored you. I personally love the challenging platforming in the Alley but the elevator and the space portion of the toy store are really claustrophobic and tedious.
❤ *Toy Story 2* has always been a videogame that's stayed with me forever in my mind. It's so iconic that the level design is memorable at best. The levels that many find annoying may actually still be worthy of remembering for the simple fact that they were still memorable in design. It's by no means a perfect videogame & I actually had been working on a Fangame of this in the past. During my studying several years ago- I was working on a 3D redesign of this game that was going to be free. Now, the difference was that I wanted to make it my own design while borrowing ideas. I actually wanted to make levels that you had mentioned in this video. We reached 45% completion. It was working perfectly & we even improved the camera. While the slow animations with friction may not be present in the Fangame. It still looked very much like the original. We improved many features & tried to be creative with the platforming ideas. 45% into the project & we started working on a new & improved Construction Site. The level even had the same puzzles. The boss was on top of the construction site too. This is when we started to shift ideas & try to implement Toy Story 3 into the game. In the end... The project was left on hiatus & while everything still works fine. The later versions of the engine has caused some serious problems. We may never finish it but it was a fun project to work on. The team moved onto their own projects respectfully. My friend owns the engine file so they will be working on it whenever they choose to do so. I was just the ideas person while also programming some of the project. My level design ideas were implemented. However, the NPCs "Rex" was removed. They also changed the way the NPC system works & made it slightly more useful. Pizza Plenet tokens stayed the same but Buzz Lightyear had some new abilities. Overall, the project rests in the hands of my friend. I've not talked to them for several years now. I'm sure they will return someday to make it a reality. He was also responsible for working on another Fangame. It was a Fangame of Bugs Life. He wanted to make his own Bugs Life 2. Anyway, the project was too ambitious. I hope this gives people hope that we can still make Toy Story-like games.
I played this game in preschool, then my mom asked the teacher for the game CD so I could play at home, it took me like 4 years to finish it. So many good games, truly a classic
i remember playing this at my first boyfriend's place. it wasn't much... we just played it until we reached the tree level and that's when we made dares for each other. fun times but in the end he had won my socks as a reward for working hard on the completion of the game... he did fail the level in end but meh... i felt bad for him so i gave him what he wanted
Hell yeah Toy Story 2! I recently discovered this game through the PS4 / PS5 streaming and really enjoyed my time with it, especially as a big fan of collectathon platformers. Some of the controls haven't aged that well but I liked it way more than I didn't, particularly with how it conveyed the story of the film pretty well.
Toy Story 2 is the first game I've completed and played properly. Like I had a fair amount of games as a kid, but I was afraid to go beyond the first levels in the likes of Ape Escape, Rayman 2, Crash Bandicoot 2 and Toy Story 2. But then one time in second grade I got sick for a week and I passed time playing and that finally got me to push beyond the first levels of Toy Story 2 and that was the beginning of a whole new level of love for gaming for me. I think I've got to give this game a spin again.
I swear, Swallow Studio's soundtrack is so unique to Travelers Tales at the time that I can recognize it whenever they use those MIDI keys! I can still 100% this comfortably every time!
I thoroughly enjoyed this as a kid. Granted I never got past second openworld zone I still used a cheat iirc to get to the airport and I was I had same thought “this is so open and empty….” I was happy just replaying the first few and still do now and then honestly.
Awesome review, Jak! I actually played and beat this game earlier this year, as well as gave the SNES original a go as well, but it was too damn difficult for me. Its great to see you covering the toy story games! Will you be reviewing the third on PS3/X360? Either way, it's great to see you doing well!
Ive never played this game so i cant say anything about it but what i can say is that the toy story 3 video game is a work of art! Although it does have alot of problems with it but i still love it
id love to know how many hours i clocked on this game as a kid i literally play this to death and that racing game one i dont remember the name another fun one from my childhood is that nascar game thats like mario kart basically
To this day, Toy Story 2 has always been one of my favorite movies of all time. I did hear a lot about the tie-in game in recent years, and as such, I bought the game digitally a year ago when Sony started bringing PS1 games to PS4 & PS5. And in the end, I had a blast playing through the game, even if the later levels weren't as good as the early levels. Very solid review!
Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear To The Rescue isn't exactly a groundbreaking platformer, but it's still a great one Back when I first played this game many years ago, I actually thought Zurg was the final boss, but never got to do so, because I was bad at games, so, I lacked the collectibles necessary. Years later, when I got another copy of the game, I got to fully experience the game for the first time, though, levels like Elevator Hop and Tarmac Trouble are some of the low points in the game for me, due to their uneven pacing. Regardless, it is a fantastic movie tie-in game, back when many licensed games were all over the place in terms of quality, and what really surprised me is that they have Toy Story 2 as part of the PlayStation Plus classics catalog for PlayStation 4 and 5, so, there's an easily accessible method of playing the game today, which is wonderful.
OH YES, LET'S GO! Admittedly my first experience with the game was a little similar, I borrowed a copy from VideoEzy three times, but never managed to get past the alley level. Thankfully since it's on PS+ now, I've made effort to amend that and see everything else the game had to offer, and TT knocked it out of the park. AND WHAT A SOUNDTRACK, Andy Blythe and Marten Joustra are absolute composing heavyweights! They even had a hand in the Wrath of Cortex OST!
I remember seeing this on a PSX Mag Demo Disc back in the day and the demo opening room level had me surprised how inviting it was to just simply explore
I haven't played it and probably never will but my vote goes out to Spider-Man 2, Teyarchs game. The swinging hasn't been topped, it has some goofy aah side missions, memorable OST and brutal combat fr lol
Agreed 🙂 I still enjoy Spider-Man 2 on ps2, treyarch had a good run with Spider-Man before they went to cod *and also I enjoy the gba version of Spider-Man 2 as well, even if it was a bit on the easy side*
I rented this game from Blockbuster as a kid, but it was the N64 version, and it's one of the games that requires a controller pak to save the game, which I didn't get until sometime after. I never got past the alleyway stage because that's about as far as I could go in one sitting. I compare this game to Battle for Bikini Bottom in that I think, despite some crap parts, it's a pretty solid platformer, but one that got a lot more clout than it may really deserve because it was a licensed title that doesn't suck which quite a few kids grew up playing. If you play them nowadays as an adult who never played them before, you'll probably ask yourself what the big deal was. Sure, they're not bad at all, but not the landmarks several people seem to claim.
I remember hiring this game out from Blockbuster when I was young, and I really enjoyed playing this game. Definitely a great game on the PlayStation, and One of the Best Games Ever. Also, I have been a fan of this TH-cam channel since May 2018.
To be that guy, technically racing games with real life cars in them are licensed games since they need licenses for the said cars. Though there are also racing games that are about specific licenses like racing series's and specific drivers. Anyway, fun fact, this game has the same composer as Crash Bandicoot Wrath of Cortex.
It's hilarious reading the comments here and realising that we all had the same experience playing this game as kids. I can't really remember anything past Zurg so chances are I quit before beating him or just after beating him. I can vaguely remember fighting the Prospector so it's possible I finished the game. But it's evident how well I remember the earlier levels and stages of the game compared to the later stages. We all seem to have lost interest playing this game somewhere before the end. Yet we all look back on the first half of the game so fondly with our nostalgia lenses.
This game and The Bugs Life game are a big part of my childhood. Are still 2 of my favorite licensed games along with the PS2 Madagascar, Shark Tale, Spongebob, and Shrek 2 games. Happy I'm not the only one that stopped in the goo boss level desoite playing it all the time. As a kid i could not figure out how to beat it for some reason.
Definitely one of the best You can beat R.C. without the jet boots if you cut him off repeatedly during the race. He'll hit you and bounce back. I've beat it 100% multiple times.
Brilliant game. Rented it for a few days years ago and never played beyond the first few levels but finally played it through 100% recently on the ps5. Controls a little wonky but genuinely have no major faults other than that.
The power of childhood excitement and begging meant that I actually owned this game slightly before I owned a PS1. The first time I played my copy was on my neighbour's PS2
This was one of my favorite platformers I played on my N64. I remember being so scared of facing the "Slime Time" boss, that I had my older sisters beat the boss for me. EDIT: 2:49 Admittedly, the soundtrack, when compared to the PS1 and PC versions, isn't that great, and there are some cut songs, like the Game Over theme. Still, I liked listening to some of the songs in the game. Funnily enough, the boss themes for "Bombs Away" and "Slime Time" were switched with each other.
I think your opinion is entirely justified. I was definitely one of the people that just got to the same level as you did as a kid and called it good. It's parts nostalgia, but the good that's in the game makes it shine through. I will argue though it's not one of the absolute best platformers on the PlayStation, but it's still enjoyable overall.
This is great, I honestly did sit down and nearly beat this gem ages ago, but I fell off and got distracted by other things, honestly as far as Toy Story video games go, there's quite a few out there, I'm more shocked there wasn't a tie in to Toy Story 4 as weird as that sounds, anyways I do hope Jak continues this marathon cause dude it gets pretty wild from here, Toy Story Racing, the Toy Story 3 game and their unique versions and Toy Story Mania that Jak brought up as a gag, could be fun once he gets to them.
As a kid for a couple years, I could never get past the first level. I saw the boss in the attack and then the enemies on the stairs and it scared the crap out of me, like they were surrounding me. So I shut off the game and played CTR. xD
I adored this game and played it a ton as a kid, but I don't think I ever actually beat it. Like, the beginning levels are genuinely amazing and super iconic, but I think I always had a similar experience like you had where it kinda lost my attention during the later levels until I stopped playing, only to return to it again after some time and start from the beginning again.
Recently replayed this on the ps5. I played the crap outta it when I was a kid but could never get all 50 tokens. It’s amazing how small some challenges are when you get older.
Played this on PC, but not to the end. Honestly is intriguing to look at Traveler's Tales games pre-Lego Star Wars since they have inconsistency when it comes to quality.
I remember having this as a kid and one of the other kids at school also said they had trouble with the Alleys and Gullies level. I don't remember it being that deep, but I also don't remember if I backtracked with the grappling hook in that level
I remember playing this game over and over when it first came out. Easily one of my favourites of the PS1 era, but I never understood the point of the slime boss though...
But… I mostly agree. The airport levels had me jaded as a kid. And the quality definitely dips by the time you’re leaving Al’s you Barn areas. Overall still have a lot of love.
I liked this game too a certain extent! It wasn't bad for me but it can get old quickly. I'll admit though it can be a fun challenge for speedrunning. Heck, I've even done speedruns collecting some of the tokens while blindfolded!
Honestly, PS1 era Disney games are some of the best licensed games in general beyond Toy Story 2. In particular... The Emperor's New Groove Tarzan Hercules Mickey's Wild Adventure A Bug's Life
I played this all the time as a kid, and I have to say, this is definitely one of the greatest tie-in games of all time. The first level is still my favorite.
Firstly thanks so much, holy shit. Forgot this was a thing people can do. 💜

It took me 20 years to beat this game for the first time lol
Next up Toy Story 3. The PS3 version has exclusive content, in which you get to play as Zurg.
YES IT IS. The PINNACLE of licensed games alongside Battle for Bikini Bottom
You didn’t watch the video then
Lotr return of the king and star wars revenge of the sith licensed games are the pinnacle
A neat little fun fact: the person who made the soundtrack for this game would later go on to compose The Wrath Of Cortex’s banger soundtrack
You can really tell, some of the tracks are similar right down to the sound selection
bro the stop-motion detail is so fire hahaha
16:57 I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT LOL. Great review my man
This is the first game I ever played, so much nostalgia.
I 100% this game roughly once a year. It's somewhat of a comfort game for me.
It was also one of the first games I have I ever played. The OST is stuck in my head.
Mesa do the exact same thing. It is comforting good point, its so fun on handheld with vibration
Same and same. Played it this year already.
Completely agree, this and Simpsons Hit & Run were the goats
I loved this game as a kid and still do today after replaying it awhile back on PS4.

I remember getting this game as a kid and loving it. Especially after I worn out my Toy Story VHS by watching it all the time 😅
I was actually ecstatic when I saw this game on PSplus, its forever on my dashboard just to jump into on occasion
Putting Jessie on the side of the road fucking killed me in more ways than one lmao. Jak thanks for bringing up childhood trauma.
You deserve way more subs man
Love your channel
Fucking appreciate that so much mate, cheers! 😁
This game and Spider-man 2 are the goats of licensed movie tie in games. The devs of this game are absolutely based for the level of difficulty in platforming they put in this game that’s advertised for kids lol.
Another reason why Toy Story 4 shouldn't have existed is because there wasn't an innovative but flawed video game tie-in with it
The mom and dad fighting joke made me have to leave a like 😂 Great video!
Among the best absolutely. This, Spider-Man 2, 007 Nightfire, 007 Everything or Nothing, just some examples of great licensed games.
Really appreciate the honest takes on the parts that bored you. I personally love the challenging platforming in the Alley but the elevator and the space portion of the toy store are really claustrophobic and tedious.

@@SquareEyedJak thank you for all the countless years of fun content.
Jessie and Buzz doing it at 16:57 killed me. 😂

She had twins?

The dream for a fantastic Zurg boss fight is still out there. Someday we might go beyond infinity and find it.
It's in Toy Story 3
Toy Story 3 on the 360 is coop and a blast to play with someone. Hope to see a review on it too
i remember playing this at my first boyfriend's place. it wasn't much... we just played it until we reached the tree level and that's when we made dares for each other. fun times but in the end he had won my socks as a reward for working hard on the completion of the game... he did fail the level in end but meh... i felt bad for him so i gave him what he wanted

Like, the beginning levels are genuinely amazing and super iconic, but I think I always had a similar experience like you had where it kinda lost my attention during the later levels until I stopped playing, only to return to it again after some time and start from the beginning again.
One of my favourite games of all time
I never played much but I had a Toy Story game on a demo disc, one of many, always wished I had the full game!
Damn bro this an ultimate nostalgia trip! Im soo gunna buy this again and actually clock it!
I hope you consider reviewing the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command for PS1.
I won the race against the car without the rocket boots
Played this first back in 2017 on my Vita. Finished it to 100% easily one of the greats! Please cover "Cars" soon ✨
Definitely one of the best. I've played this game more times than I can count...
Don't forget Toy Story Racer!
Classic racing game :)
I'm surprised you didn't like the elevator hop level. It was always one of my favorites!
I remember having this as a kid and one of the other kids at school also said they had trouble with the Alleys and Gullies level. I don't remember it being that deep, but I also don't remember if I backtracked with the grappling hook in that level
i will buy it someday....very underrated 3d platformer indeed sir
I remember playing this game over and over when it first came out. Easily one of my favourites of the PS1 era, but I never understood the point of the slime boss though...
It refined everything about the bugs life platformer the year prior. Unbelievable game
But… I mostly agree. The airport levels had me jaded as a kid. And the quality definitely dips by the time you’re leaving Al’s you Barn areas.
Overall still have a lot of love.
You should make a top 10 little person in a kitchen levels, i swear theres that many lol
WE DESERVE THIS ON NSO!
Just starting this video, but to answer the question: Yes. Yes it is!
I would love to see a remake of this game
I remember playing this game on ps1 great classic memories and now remastered on ps5
Good review
great intro/outro music
Great vídeo! But I'm curious If we'll have ToY Story Racer Review in the Future 😃
The Emperor's New Groove
Tarzan
Hercules
Mickey's Wild Adventure
A Bug's Life
0:12 How I look when I say Toy Story 2 is one of my childhood games.
