The first tank against tank combat in history took place on 24 April 1918 when three A7Vs (including chassis number 561, known as "Nixe") taking part in an attack with infantry incidentally met three Mark IVs (two female machine gun-armed tanks and one male with two 6-pounder guns) near Villers-Bretonneux. During the battle, tanks on both sides were damaged. According to the lead tank commander, Second Lieutenant Frank Mitchell, the female Mk IVs fell back after being damaged by armour-piercing bullets. They were unable to damage the A7Vs with their own machine guns. Mitchell then attacked the lead German tank, commanded by Second Lieutenant Wilhelm Biltz,[6] with the 6-pounders of his own tank and knocked it out. He hit it three times, and killed five of the crew when they bailed out. He then went on to rout some infantry with case shot. The two remaining A7Vs in turn withdrew. As Mitchell's tank withdrew from action, seven Whippet tanks also engaged the infantry. Four of these were knocked out in the battle, and it is unclear if any of them engaged the retreating German tanks. Mitchell's tank lost a track towards the end of the battle from a mortar shell and was abandoned. The damaged A7V limped back to the German lines, but eventually broke down.

Very good reply but just a few things you didnt mention.
Also the Video gives the wrong impression, it has the tank firing on the move!
It could hardly hit anything when it was moving, except air or mud as like a ship, the tank and gun was constantly moving and they did not have suspension.
Once the female tanks had withdrawn Mitchell did a very brave and also dangerous thing and he stopped his tank, so that his gunners could give accurate fire. This meant they were a sitting duck for the German tank. The Germans missed and the two British gunners, now stationary fired disabling the German tank, frightened their tank would blow up, they evacuated and Mitchell's tank killed some of them as they were leaving.
The two other A7Vs on seeing this retreated. That was not the end of the action though, not only did Mitchell frighten of the A7Vs but he also carried on for some hours, driving and firing up and down the front line at the German lines protecting the helpless female tanks and helping infantry advance, even at the risk of their own lives.
His luck would run out though as eventually he lost a track, it was looking bleak when just then onto the battlefield came the new and much faster British "Whippet" tanks saving Mitchell and his crew.
This would lead to Mitchell receiving the first-ever VC ( Victoria Cross) for the Royal Tank Regiment.
Another little thing to add to the danger, is that often tanks carried extra fuel on the top of their tanks. Because of this practice many tankies died. When the fuel after being hit would flow into the cabin and catch fire, the crew would be burnt to death!!
Lastly people often look at the little Renault tank and say "Ooo that's what a tank looks like not that lumbering rhomboid thing those Brits had!"
Except when Tritton first envisaged his tank it was much like a modern tank it even had a turret. But like the little Renault it was ok on open ground but it was too fast for the infantry to keep up and could not cross 8ft trenches.
So like the Little two man Renault it was absolutely useless to cross 8ft wide trenches.
So Tritton and Wilson then went back to the drawing board and came up with a Rhomboid shape which was perfect for the 8ft wide trench ( by the end of WW1 those trenches would be 12ft wide) warfare that was being fought on the western front.
One of its military requirements was that it must also be able to flatten the barbed wire for the infantry to cross.
The video also wrongly states that the tank ran on "Caterpillar" tracks they were not Caterpillar but tracks again invented by Tritton and Maj Wilson which were more robust and actually stayed on which the imported tracks could not they broke and would sag making the tank lose it's tracks.
"Ah the but at least the "Caterpillar" tracks were an American invention!"
Some are saying right now. Unfortunately not, they were invented by David Roberts (1859, Chester - 22 April 1928, Grantham) was the Chief Engineer and managing director of Richard Hornsby & Sons in the early 1900s. His invention, the caterpillar track, was demonstrated to the army in 1907
He hoped the military could use them. But when the military weren't interested with no civilian use coming to mind they sold the patent to Holt In America. Who would then end up being Caterpillar. So where does the name caterpillar come from?
When the tracked vehicle was being demonstrated to the Army by Roberts the soldiers watching said it looked like a caterpillar.
Only a year after selling the patent to Holt, the British Army bought tracked vehicles from the Holt company.
Why didn't the Army buy the Hornsby tracked vehicle?
Well when it was being demonstrated a cavalry officer said that 8 horses could pull the load quicker...
Couldn't you just slap him with the Stupid idiot stick?

Considering that Churchill was 1st Lord of the Admiralty and had battleships in mind, the lack of a turret seems odd.

    • @BigHorseFilm
      @BigHorseFilm 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Firstly, I'm not positive, but I think at the time Churchill had been disgraced and demoted for his failure in the Gallipoli Campaign by the tanks introduction. Secondly, you are right, it is odd considering the inspiration for the tanks were battleships, for them not to have turreted weapons. However, if my memory serves me correctly, the specifications for dimensions of the vehicle (Mostly for crossing trenches and similar terrain) left the tanks far to narrow to mount a turret as had been desired. So the sponsons were really an after thought.

  • @john1st13th5

This is completely inaccurate! Firstly, the A7V was not 'rushed' into production: the German High Command utterly failed to grasp the effectiveness of the tank, and put very little effort into the development of German tanks. Secondly, at the battle of Villars-Brettoneoux, there were 20 A7Vs deployed, of which three engaged the british tanks. Thirdly, the two Female tanks were heavily damaged before they withdrew, taking heavy fire from German armor-piercing bullets. Fourthly, the first A7V did not 'withdraw;' it was knocked out of action, and its crew escaped on foot under heavy fire.

The first A7V was destroyed by Lieutenant Mitchell and his crew in the Mark IV Male; the A7V's destruction was confirmed by many witnesses, including its commander 2nd lt. Wilhelm Biltz. The other two A7V retreated when Mitchell's men fired on them; Mitchell's tank was not destroyed in the battle: an artillery shell broke one of the tracks, and the crew bailed out: none of them were killed, and the tank was later retrieved; check out Mitchell's account of the battle, "When Tank fought tank"

Also not to mention that the French fought bravely at The Battle of Bir Hakeim, the French only had 3,703 men, while they were facing a Battalion of Italian forces , and Erwin Rommel the ELITE tank commander of the Afrika Korps, they held off both tank commanders for 2 weeks with no tanks, and just bazookas, and guess what NONE of them ran and guess, what due to this hold out by the French, the German invasion of Kasserine was held back for 2 weeks and allowed the americans to win in Kass.

No, there wasn't, the A7V could go 4 MPH. That's it. There where a total of 4 tanks on the first battle of armoured warfare, 3 British, 1 German, though this is inaccurate in the fact the British tanks where actually put out of service by the A7V, and that same tank would later go on to withstand an airstrike.

Unfortunately, there are many inaccuracies in this clip. All the CGI British tanks are "males"; there are no females. "Mary" and "Bobby" are actually opposite sides of a dummy built for a German film made in 1934 called "Stosstrupp 1917". The "British" soldiers are German extras. The A7V had a higher speed than the British on good ground, but poor trench-crossing ability. I've never come across any reference to the A7V having such a nickname.
