Was at this show! RIP the Palladium, one of the best places to see a show, better than the Garden. The balcony was especially good. I was up there for Rush and during Cygnus X-1 we watched the massive old chandelier shaking. We thought it was going to fall on the crowd. I'm glad I was around for those shows, especially FZ.
Haha I was at that Rush concert. I saw them there twice, in '77 and '78 I believe, Cheap Trick and UFO were the openers the first time. Never saw Zappa sadly!
after this gig, all subsequent gigs may have felt like a holiday for Steve Vai......nothing but utmost admiration Mr Vai...at that time I was 14 years old, practicing my head off and dreaming about applying for a position as fellow stunt guitar player......whe I felt ready, Frank was sick.....Love Zappa!!!
I had this on a bootleg video back in the 80's for the longest time and played it until I wore it out. Thanks to guys like you and TH-cam this won't happen again :)
I just happened to be in Manhattan visiting my sister just a few blocks uptown from the Palladium. I heard about the show that afternoon and decided to walk to the Palladium just to soak up the fandom. I soon noted fairly good tickets were selling third party, & as being alone greatly improves the odds of a great scalped seat, I ended up in the 3rd or 4th row of the balcony just about dead center for the marked price of the ticket. One of those times it all comes together. I was a complete stranger to Steve Vai in 1981 and remember the impression of “who the hell IS this guy?” What a night.
Amazing, I don't know how these guys did it other than rehearse their asses off constantly. Listen to the time signatures, the rythms changing on a dime. I notice in a lot of Zappa compositions, he will have a riff played then completely stopped - silence - then started again. That is damn hard shit to play because the mentality you get into as a musician is that the music flows and you can get lost. This though, you gotta be right on top of your game, because it dont flow man. Steve Vai said they has to remember 80 compositions and every night Frank would create a new set list
I swear I'm here for the music, but I'm loving the extended interview intro. Humor belongs in music, and to do it the best, you need a killer band that can play anything while keeping the audience involved. Zappa, Weird Al, Steel Panther, GWAR, etc.
I got to see him live in '80 and beeing at the age of 14 ,was totally blown away by his music! Frank Zappa crossed the border of musical genres with his innovative and brilliant compositions, provoking the conservative establishment ❤
Wow! I had never seen this, Zappa on top of his game as usual with all the heavy hitters Steve Via, Scott Thunes, Ray White & Chad Wackerman. Which all would end up on The Man From Utopia album which was released in 82. Funny... Ray White sounds a lot like "Ike Willis" ... greatly miss Frank Zappa, thanks for posting this.
Both Drummers Terry B and Vinnie C were the same young age when they started with Frank as well!! Not to mention Steve Vai was only 18!!! I actually auditioned for Frank (with Chad) at the same time - same age - before this... That's the age when we all really "had it" (think about it - we started playing around 5 - 7 years old - and played non stop - took private lessons - through school bands, garage bands , etc... and for me - I was playing drums to Frank's LP's since I was 12... I was ready.... but Chad was more ready ...lol...
In my country, 40 or 50 years ago, it was difficult to have access to this material. I was lucky enough to listen to it and even today I can't find anything that resembles it
I liked Yes and Genesis. I saw Zappa around this time at The Palladium. I was dissapointed. He conducted some of the time and hardly did any of his goofy fun shit. My stupid young head missed out on the best thing I ever could have witnessed. Nowadays his music is among the narrow list I deem all that I can even bear to listen to. Zoot Allures, Chunga's Revenge, Sleep Dirt and Studio Tan are some of the most extraordinary pieces of art in the world. Not to mention about ten more of his albums. Music is the best, he said, and held it to the light.
Anyone know if this is the Halloween show at the Palladium that Steve Vai talked so highly about ? Saying Franks guitar playing that night was the best guitar playing Steve’s ever heard. Been looking everywhere trying to find some recording of it. I’m pretty sure this was the show. Thanks so much for posting this.

Thank you for putting this up! I have this on VHS but I don't have a player anymore. The album/cd is released Oct 2 2020. Some tracks are pre available and it sounds great. What a great time and the Felt Forum as a room for that band to be heard had excellent acoustics for them. @@evanwolf6618
Grateful to have seen Frank upwards 27+ times but missed this MTV show.Thank you!!!

@@jakefeinbergshow Thank you so much for part 2... I was wondering if there was a part 2!.... and there is!...
Watched it live on MTV. Awesome.
I was there and this is the first time I have watched the video 😂 Happy Halloween 👻
Another memorable night I spent with Frank in my youth
Wow, with little Italian virtuoso Stevie Vai on guitar. The video sounds great.
That pretty much answers why one had to be top-notch to play in Frank's band.
Frank Zappa was the only person who could say Steve Vai was his rhythm guitarist.
THANK YOU! from an all ZAPPA fanatic...Palladium was a special place to me
I left that comment about Zappa being president in another comment on another video amazing minds think alike
Man, these arrangements are INSANE. Truly AmAZING band!
after this gig, all subsequent gigs may have felt like a holiday for Steve Vai......nothing but utmost admiration Mr Vai...at that time I was 14 years old, practicing my head off and dreaming about applying for a position as fellow stunt guitar player......whe I felt ready, Frank was sick.....Love Zappa!!!
so who do you play with??
@@floydfanatik69 sheercerebralpower
I had this on a bootleg video back in the 80's for the longest time and played it until I wore it out. Thanks to guys like you and TH-cam this won't happen again :)
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR SHARING THIS !!! MISS FRANK ZAPPA !!!
Frank deserved to have someone with a brain interview him
I just happened to be in Manhattan visiting my sister just a few blocks uptown from the Palladium.
Steve Vai in a leopard vest and it’s only 1981. He’s kicking off the 80s right. 👍
just great googly moogly! luckily saw all his 80-shows here -from norway with love
This is beyond me.. I like this a lot. Great Archive
Zappa is great and this little video is sure a tasty number ,, thanx
Wow. Zappa forever. Thank you.
I got to see him live in '80 and beeing at the age of 14 ,was totally blown away by his music!
Frank Zappa crossed the border of musical genres with his innovative and brilliant compositions, provoking the conservative establishment ❤

This is one of my all time favorite Zappa live show recordings... SO good.
Much missed. First gig I took my daughter to was Zappa Plays Zappa...
Omg that awesome...isn't another 30 yr old daughter that knows more zappa sings then my daughter😂 I wanta meet you bro
I was there and I remember MTV annoying the heck out of Frank. He was bemused and just went on with the show after a point.
Was at this show! Was awesome!
These way too serious times need some serious Zappa back! I'm telling you.
I was born on that day! What a concert Frank did to celebrate myself!!
Wow! I had never seen this, Zappa on top of his game as usual with all the heavy hitters Steve Via, Scott Thunes, Ray White & Chad Wackerman. Which all would end up on The Man From Utopia album which was released in 82. Funny... Ray White sounds a lot like "Ike Willis" ... greatly miss Frank Zappa, thanks for posting this.
merci pour le partage vue en concert en 1979 a lyon france concert magnifique vive le rock
6:00 "......Well, you can make soup." lmfao her clueless stare and then he turns away like alright nvm
😂
Cannot to this day wrap my head around drummer Chad is only 21 here. Just playing this impossible music flawless.
His dad was a drummer and a music teacher. His brothers John and Brooks are great drummers.
Frank was about to turn 41 here in December 1981.
Wow this is the best copy of the live broadcast I have seen. The bottom screen is the only indicator that this is from a VHS
Yes, but this yt video has parts whuch the DVD does not have
That and some songs missing on the DVD
In my country, 40 or 50 years ago, it was difficult to have access to this material.
I was lucky enough to listen to it and even today I can't find anything that resembles it
Excited to find Steve Vai’s introduction to the world here! Skinny dude on the left! 🎸
4:15 oh man, Frank administering the pheromoane test~
He was a pro and they don't make 'em like that no more~
Thanks a lot!
Never seen him, tho, so these vids are the only live impressions i get from him...
Oh no, seen the band from utopia once in Germany😊
"We'll leave the Devil to Charlie Daniels"
😂(Nina Blackwood blank look)...
I saw Zappa in Philly the night after he did the Conehead skit on Saturday Night Live. The whole band came out and played the show in Coneheads.
I was 13 and my brother brought me to this concert
damn good copy, wish it was full >D
I liked Yes and Genesis. I saw Zappa around this time at The Palladium. I was dissapointed. He conducted some of the time and hardly did any of his goofy fun shit. My stupid young head missed out on the best thing I ever could have witnessed. Nowadays his music is among the narrow list I deem all that I can even bear to listen to. Zoot Allures, Chunga's Revenge, Sleep Dirt and Studio Tan are some of the most extraordinary pieces of art in the world. Not to mention about ten more of his albums. Music is the best, he said, and held it to the light.
That girl was really such a great and rad and raw interviewer. Respect to all involved.
Honesty I thought that she and Frank were trading insults
That's great! Thanks for posting👍... Love FZ ❤
Absolutely Frank and his buddies ! And our Italian Virtuoso guitar player, Steve Vai ... Just Lol. Love that Frank let the guitar parts to Steve!
I saw him New Year-'s Night 1977 at the Inglewood Forum in L.A. with Captain Beefheart
and the Hollywood Modern Dance Troupe. Amazing show
Loved this, love you are what you is Album, wanna hear more now
Anyone know if this is the Halloween show at the Palladium that Steve Vai talked so highly about ? Saying Franks guitar playing that night was the best guitar playing Steve’s ever heard. Been looking everywhere trying to find some recording of it. I’m pretty sure this was the show. Thanks so much for posting this.
- I remember an interview with Steve Vai where he said it was a backstage warm-up. He stated that Frank just *totally astounded* him.
10-31-77 is a well loved show
Absolute Legend 👑
I saw & heard fountains of chocolate milk gush from her paradise, without laughing the stars began to chat and ceased to scroll and we to grab hold of their golds at dawn. The sun was dizzy and the moon, stirred, hid behind a section of clouds in the shape of a barbapapa 🦄🌺
Thank you for putting this up! I have this on VHS but I don't have a player anymore. The album/cd is released Oct 2 2020. Some tracks are pre available and it sounds great. The interview in the beginning is a little rough. Who let the turtleneck from Starfleet backstage? That being said this was the EARLY days of MTV and satellite links.
That being said
@@rsmkoSaid that being.
This is the best thing I’ve ever seen in my life
Happy Halloween from Canada. Saw this show in Toronto in 81 & 82.
Frank recognized virtuoso players
Was at this early show and mid nigth was even better!
Frank...We need you now.
Yesss.. dont´let her speak out ! Its better for all the Audience !!! Frank-I miss you -not only for your unique Musik -for the Planet !
Best wishes- Martinelli
One of Franks best lineups for sure
Thanks for the upload!
Saw fz in Atlanta for this tour in 81
I was there too. Saw this tour again in December Champagne,Illinois.
If I'm not mistaken Whipping Post was encore to close out show in Atlanta
