    I would love a video about St Nazairre - the whole history of it during the war was incredible, from the allies evacuating, the sinking of the Lancastria, Operation Chariot, the American bombing, and the German pocket after D-Day. Would have to be a long video to fit all that in!

    French sold a lot of their Stug and Panzer IV to Egypt and Syria. Some might still be rusting away in their warehouse.

    I am so glad to see a well preserved and still rolling German built, World War 2 Panther battle tank. Once again this is one of the best video a great thanks to mister Mark Felton for sharing us this wonderful vlog.

    The thing that bothers me is that the French officially adopted the ARL 44 for patriotic reasons despite the ARL 44 being outdated and unreliable; even more prone to breakdowns than the Panther which is saying something.

    • @antoniogariz2630
      @antoniogariz2630 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      BHuang92 thy actually built only 50 of them, as it was already outdated

    • @Shloomy_Shloms
      @Shloomy_Shloms 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      The ARL 44 was more of a way of letting French tank designers imaginations run wild post war since they were occupied and unable to do anything until late 1944, they knew it was out dated from the word go but as you said, it was mainly for patriotic reasons as to why it was designed and built

    • @leopold7148
      @leopold7148 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The tank was meant to rapidly fill the gap between the moment of France not having any tanks and the moment where they had done the required research and rebuild the infrastructure to build a well designed tank .

    • @bluntcabbage6042
      @bluntcabbage6042 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The ARL was created likely as a means to keep factories working, because if they had ceased all production of any tanks, it would be highly possible that politicians would re-purpose the factories for other uses, hence leaving no factories left to use after tank production and design is kicked back up again in France.

    Note that the video of the panther that open and close this video are from the Saumur Museum's Panther, which is precisely an ex-french army panther. If i remember correctly, it's maintained in running condition since the war with its original maybach engine.

    The fact that some Panthers had a far longer service life with the French than with the Germans is fascinating. If only they'd spent some time trying to iron out some of the mechanical faults themselves, such as the final drives.

  • @user6008

    Just the facts. The Panther, Panzer four and Stug III lived on as useful vehicles after the end of WWII. Whereas both the Tiger and King Tiger did not, except in Museum's. Which is rather revealing from an historical viewpoint. Exposing the Tiger tank as the hugely impractical blunder that it really was in hindsight.

    German Panzers were notoriously unreliable. With all the mystique about the high quality of German engineering, that statement sounds so ironic. But, war influences many things.

    Too bad some forward-thinking Hollywood mogul didn't scoop up a few f them to use in movies; then we would not need to use vismods or repainted M-48s.
    Of course, on the other hand, people might comment on how odd it was that every German unit portrayed in movies seemed to be lavishly equipped with Panthers... oh, well.

  • @zzzxxc1
    @zzzxxc1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Germans in WWII: The Panther is pretty good. Feels safer than allied tanks.
    Americans in WWII: The Panther is great and is to be feared.
    Soviets in WWII: Okay tank, will use until transmission breaks or we run out of ammo.
    French after WWII: It's a decent tank. We will incorporate some of its designs in our own tanks.
    British after WWII: We lost a lot of tanks to them but when we built some of them ourselves, without any blueprints and using parts from a bombed out factory, they were total garbage.
    People decades later who never served in WWII: The Panther is complete trash, Reeeee

    Everything used in battle by US and UK forces and many other army's today its really easy to see they copied the German forces, best aircraft, best artillery piece,best tanks best weapons far ahead of the allies best soldiers too, I'm British but you have to admire the German soldiers, SS commited terrible atrocities but men like pieper have great reputations as soldiers was it his unit that killed US soldiers at the bulge.

    The panther may of been the best afv of ww2, but calling the tiger impractical? It was a destroyer of yank, Brit and red armour, and wrecking the Reds was important (would of been a better idea than wrecking the Nazis in my opinion, the Reds murdered a lot more people than the Nazis killed) the tiger even though slow, could of took on soviet is-2/is-3 tanks, possibly t-54's and definitely all lighter soviet vehicles, Tigers has a 11-1 kill ratio at the battle of Kursk, where the soviets mainly used t-34's, which were still in frontline service in the soviet army in the late 50's early 60's, and wer used by reservists till the 80's and for a airfield defence, and are still used in a reserve, training or police role by many communist and 3rd world counties today, North Korea (reserves/training) Cuba (police, some have water cannon instead of main gun) Angola (reserves) etc. What happened to the Swedish King tiger was criminal (hard target) and the Tigers should of been used by the French and the west Germans. But I guess the yanks wanted to take them away from their Wehrmacht past, giving them m1 helmets and m1 garands. Sinful to kill Prussian tradition and give them American styled uniforms, weapons and even the culture, which was the biggest crime at all, east Germany may of been a totalitarian red nightmare, but at least they still had German pride, culture, and Prussian military tradition. It's sad when Sweden and Chile have more in common with Prussia than the Bundeswehr, should still be the Wehrmacht and have ww1/Prussian style tradition, I understand removing Nazi stuff, but removing Germanness was sinful.

    • @binaway
      @binaway 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They never built a lot of Tigers and most were destroyed. Of the few survivors a majority would have been in the the east and in the West the other Allies wanted their share as trophy's and for study. To few serviceable examples would have been available to make them practical in the post war French army.
