Hi Everyone, Today we tackle the window regulators on the Ferrari 308. Oh my... The windows are soooo slowwww... There is a good reason for that! The grease used back in the day turns to glue over time and nothing can move. Today's project is to remove the regulators, disassemble and clean them thoroughly. Then re-lube and re-install. The job took a few evenings, but is well worth it!

Number one - it's great to see females as auto techs - I think the industry needs many, MANY more! For 39 years, I was an aircraft engineer in the aircraft overhaul business. On one of the engines we rebuilt, when we split open the main gearbox, there was always one bearing whose outer race would move while in service. We talked to the factory engineers about it and they were convinced it was the bearings "looking for their proper place". So, when you talked about the bearing blocks supporting the worm gear drive "finding their place" you're absolutely correct. Great job!

Thanks for going to great effort in putting together this vid, easy to follow your instructions. 80's Alfa GTV6s have a similar system (cables) and are prone to slow opening and closing action. I have being putting off doing this job on my '84 GTV6, but now feel I can tackle it. Lots of transferrable skills in vid. Good idea to take lots of photos, a video?, and labels. It's mid winter in Melbourne Aust and our 5th covid lockdown, time to head for the garage and start pulling apart the driver side door. Thanks again F & H.
Never thought I’d be so enthralled by a video about a window regulator. I especially loved the annotations outlining the path of the cable. Looking forward to the rest of the videos!
You certainly have more patience than do. On the older American cars, they have the problem of not having enough power to the motor. Many times the only fix is adding a relay but that would not be correct in this case. It should be done as you have using proper maintenance.

Thanks Jake, yup,... I think the worst of it is the wiring and bad connections. It is working, but I'm sure would be better with better power and grounds.
I did a similar job on a Mazda 929 about the same vintage and a similar system. Mazda wanted like a $1000 to replace the whole system instead I did it myself. They use a small plastic drum that the cable winds around and it had broken. Initially they refused to sell the part separately but after I pressured them they sold it to me for $30 but warned me it’s not repairable. I basically did what you did, pulled apart cleaned lubed and reassembled and it worked perfectly! $30 instead of $1000 and I felt very pleased at giving it a go.

Back in the day (when I was younger ;-) ) The Italian motor/motorcycle Industry had a bad reputation for their electrics. Your brass (or bronze) shaft bearings are probably a legacy from those times. Everything is much better now. The electrics doubts caused the biggest purchase mistake I ever made. A Triumph bonniville when I was considering buying a 1976 Ducati 900 ss.

I think that's the most complicated window mechanism I have ever seen.
My mercedes rear windows are cables. It just basically looks like a violin bow and has a little plastic thing attached to the cable that fits into a slot at the bottom of the glass. It is held on the door with four rivets.
The front though are a scissor mechanism and held in with about 9 rivets.
I would have used silicone grease on that mechanism. I think it will hold up better.
You might spray some silicone spray where the window rides up and down on the front edge. Might help a little. I spray it on mine every so often to make it run a little easier. Ciao!

Totally! The only bit that wasn't rock hard was the tiny part that was on the worm gear. ...and it was like uncured epoxy!

Hey Franny, just thought I’d take the time to express my thanks for this video, it was the tipping point in giving me the confidence to finally tackle this project, having had my 308 for over six years. It meant I could methodically work my way through the process and generally enjoy it.
The only real trouble I had was getting the window wire back onto the runners in the door, it genuinely felt like the wire had shrunk in the time I had it off the car, so a bit of force was needed. The difference now is incredible, and I added the window booster as well, to give the whole setup the best chance possible. Loved your outlook and enthusiasm. Now just got to repeat the process for the driver’s side. Much love from the UK

That is quite an interesting mechanism. In principle it's not that difficult, but in practice there's a lot that can go wrong. With the grease that hard I'm surprised the window was moving at all, or that the motor didn't burnout. Love the hidden door release under the armrest. Looking forward to the next installment. This is very helpful. Thanks. I'm a bit terrified of not being able to get the cable back wound properly.
That strangely isn't that important. By the time you re-string it back up in the car it has loosened on the spool and is a bit of a mess. But, never fear, it will right itself once you run it up and down a couple times. There is one caveat - you have to make sure the initial wind doesn't cross over itself on the spool. After that and you have it assembled you are good. That was the slight crunching noise you heard when I ran the cable up and down the first time. After a couple runs it was good and I could take the rest of the slack out. It is actually less scary than it seems. Also make sure the cable is on the pulleys and not behind them. There was some fuss with the alignment of the window clamps on the cable. Just work with it until it doesn't bind. Might want to keep your battery on a tender ;) Good luck!
Excellent presentation. Probably like (nearly?) everyone else watching, not likely ever to wrench a 308 ( but I have replaced window regulators on my 2002tii). Regardless, Franny is so articulate and vid was so descriptive that I couldn’t turn it off. Will keep watching, along with my faves: Nick Murray and Doug DeMuro. Hi Franny, I did put in my 308 after doing the same work a window accerlerator, this a relais which gives an extra electric mass to the motor. If you look on birdmans 308 parts you will see which parts I mean. After that my windows worked realy fine. Great job and great video, it is not an easy one. Always a pleasure to look on you work.

@@HeidiandFranny Yes, they are not realy cheap. You can also build it up with a relais combination, I have seen it somewhere in the net. I bought mine from superformance in the UK. You can measure the voltage at the motor to see how much you realy loose and than decide if it is worth. It is still also how easy the glass is moving in the seals. I will measure the time on my car and let you know about it.
@@HeidiandFranny Hi Franny, I measured the time on my windows, the engine running on idle, 1000 rpm, doors closed, roof on. I took 2,5 seconds down and 3,2 seconds up. This is with the window accelerator, everything greased 5 month ago. Hope it helps you on your 308, these cars deserve to be in a good shape.

Ugh! I just did this job on my '85 Mondial QV Cab, and getting that cable spooled correctly on the motor was a 2-3 hour pain. BUT - they work great now! I even added the accelerator kit.

Very nicely done and well explained. This video will act as a wonderful DIY for many and as defense testimony to any shop after a customer complains about how many hours they were billed to fix slow windows. It is a VERY time consuming job with the final window adjustment being fiddly to get right.
Always interesting, the 1/4 light channel may need cleaning / adjusting to get it even smoother

You can improve the "up" speed by brushing some aerosol silicone into the front channel. Greatly reduces the friction from the fuzzies.

I would have cleaned and greased each of the pulleys too. I had an Alfa Spider Veloce with a similar power window mechanism (It’s a Pininfarina thing!) When I cleaned and greased the pulleys and cable, the system worked much faster.
I did a couple years ago when I was in there last. The pulleys are pretty loose. Are they a bit wobbly on your Alpha?

What a complicated design for a window regulator! I bet the folks on the assembly line had all sort of fun running those cables. One thought that popped into my mind though...will the grease you use attack the plastic over the course of time? I wonder if the reason others have used lithium grease was to ensure that wouldn't happen...
It really must have been fun. I was thinking about that as I was reinstalling everything. I'm sure if you did it every day it would go a lot faster but there still is a lot of fussing. I think the grease will be just fine. It is a really hard plastic - like a thermal plastic. I think the original grease was simple wheel bearing grease. I've actually seen it all over (like the door latch mechanism). It really is more like slow cure epoxy! Silicone grease might have been a good choice too :)

What a system! Fair play with sll the photos and notes. Lots of gotchas hiding in there. Still a wee bit slow you think? What about the motor brushes and commutator clean? Also all the window switch contacts and wiring connectors? All those little voltage drops aplong the way.....
Absolutely. I wonder what they were like from the factory. The window switches are a couple years old and they actually really helped. I was thinking of going into the motors but I just didn't want to break the factory seals. I think the wiring as you mentioned is the worst of it. Those wires aren't very thick for sure. They will be better once the car is running and we get another volt or two.

Franny, good job. You may also want to put a little lubricant along the vertical rubber channel that runs up the front of the glass. These tend to dry our over time and make it harder for the glass to slide.
Thanks for that. I did get some dry lube on it but the window is surprisingly loose I bet those channels could stand to be replaced.
First initial thought - whenever I take regulators out, I use a sharpie to mark the outline of the tensioner position so it can go back in the same place.

@@LouTrottier We have a few things coming up - that steering rack and also the seals on the shift rod need to be replaced. That should be interesting ;) We also have some interior work and our grill is incorrect. Oh, I suppose I have to reinstall the suspension bits once they get back. There is also that leaking oil line to the cooler... Not a ton of stuff, but it should pretty much sort the car. But you know these cars... Always something ;)

Great job!! Your systematic approach once again produces success. (I had no idea a window mechanism could be so complex). I was curious why you did not grease the cable?? Or, would that cause slippage? Those pulleys may introduce a lot of friction into the system. But, I'm no expert! Just curious..... Keep up the good work! Can't wait for the suspension parts to come back!!
Thanks so much! I did wipe the cable with grease really to help guard against corrosion. I had greased the pulleys a couple years back when I had the panels off last time. It really didn't make much of a difference unfortunately. Probably because the cable is really only taught over like two pulleys at a time. Yes on the suspension parts! We need to make a couple calls to see where we are with that. Long lead times :(

How timely! I just replaced the window regulator on my '69 Beetle...along with all the rubber. I now appreciate the simplicity of the VW contraption.It was nothing compared to this. The only part that gave me headaches was the outside scraper.

Hi Franny, great video again! Have you thought of using a tire paint marker instead of the nail polish, they come in bright colors like orange, blue or red and make it easy to mark torqued nuts and bolts!

Don't like cable style regulators they stretch over time. But great work, window regulators aren't fun for me, being 6'3" my long arms tend to get in the way. Oh yea just remembered BMW provided a product called sylglide, a product that reminds me of Vaseline, basically Vaseline with silicone in it, we all know silicone attracts moisture, not the best idea for alot of applications. Like you I used the red bearing grease, moly seems to attract grime way too easily.
I don't have a Ferrari, but I love the logic & thoroughness of your explanations. I know this doesn't relate to the car, but where did you the restrictor in the parts cleaner, did that come from JEG or somewhere else? Also I love the light you have on your bench, can you tell me the brand? It looks very bright , something my eyes could use. Your videos are really excellent, and i learn something, or just catch something in the periphery. I know I am far afield here, but I'm mentioning this for your safety, and not losing the car. I had a friend that bought a 1986 328GTS with a blown engine in 1992 for $15,000. I hung around while he did a lot of the work and learned a number of things..Long story ,short he rebuilt it. It ran great. He talked to a lot of Ferrari owners and they they told him to always keep a 2.5 lb. Halotron fire extinguisher in the car. (This kind leaves no residue and does not affect the Ozone layer) because of the kind of fuel leakage problem, especially in a car that had been stored like this one was. they are prone to all kinds of leakages. He was on the freeway one day and he saw smoke from the inside of the right rear body, as he slowed down it became flames. He popped the hood and the air hit it and it erupted into full flames. He got the extinguisher and blasted it in to the corner, and he said after 10-15 seconds it went out. There was a lot of cooked wiring, but the car was saved. Apparently there was some small fitting under the right rear body panel that leaked. The extinguisher was a the saving factor. The CHP officer that stopped said he sees cars go up in flames, in 30 seconds or so. I lost a car to a fire, and it is a helpless feeling to just stand there and watch it burn. Just stay safe. Again, thanks for everything.
Thanks for that! Yes we carry Halotron and Element fire extinguishers in the cars. I had a Beetle catch fire on the way to work many years ago and before I even got out there was someone with an extinguisher. A few toasty wires, but all repairable.
The light over the workbench is a 50W LED all weather shop lamp from SuperbrightLEDs.com We have several on the ceiling as well.
The little restrictor is just s small piece of plastic I drilled a small hole in. Super simple.

In the end I installed the window motor kit from Superformance UK. Problem solved for good !! Up or down they work 10x faster. Good luck on the rest of your projects. Cheers 🍻

Lube up the window run channels and other seals with some Honda Shin Etsu Silicone grease, it's by far the best stuff for that job, Google it and you can find some articles about it, and where you can buy it (it's even on Amazon).
May also help to measure voltage at the window motor going up and down and see if you are getting 'normal' voltage when operating, old cars windows will never be fast like new cars, but sometimes you can find some hidden issues (bad/corroded connections, etc).
