These scene, and indeed much of the movie, also involves Juzo Itami satire of how Japan is attempting to mimic what is seen as "western." When the film was created, there were etiquette classes available to those seeking to act more "western." The scene spoofs the whole notion because the class ends up doing exactly what the "western" man does, as opposed to what the teacher instructs the students to do to be proper for the "west."
Trust me, in Italy eating spaghetti silently is very good manners. But you will find people who slurp them a bit. Just to add to your point, in the sense that silent spaghetti is 100% a classy thing, but many do not care and make some noise anyway.
I think everyone here still has it wrong. i really think this is satire about the japanese way of trying to force everything to be perfect, even when they are just mimicking another culture's way of eating, instead of finding their own way of doing it. i've had this discussion about spaghetti with a japanese friend of mine who was upset because i cut my spaghetti (which is a swedish custom, we found our own way of doing it) while a lot of japanese seem to think you HAVE to eat spaghetti this way
@M4rsu I guess you can look at this scene in different ways. I don't think that when you don't make a lot of noise you necessarily enjoy food more. When I wrote that blurb about the scene I had in mind a conversation I had with a Japanese man. He was eating noodles quietly (not in Japan) and said that his parents would be angry (or ashamed, I can't remember) with him for eating that way. Because in their mind eating quietly is the impolite way, not because you don't enjoy the food that way.
You're right...it's entrancing LOL JK. Poor Noodle-sensei. Good thing she accepted what the students wanted to do though. I need to see this film again.
@M4rsu I think you are both right. The way the lady teaches how to eat spaghetti the western refined way makes her students loose the pleasure of eating. There is a shock of culture. The western guy tries the eastern (noisy) way to eat spaghetti as he may have heard it was the proper way to eat noodles/pasta and the eastern girls want to eat their spaghetti the western noiseless way. They are all wrong. It's not the way you eat, it's the pleasure you get that counts first.
Yeah, but still, this scene isn't comparing Western Vs Japanese way of eating spaghetti. And, yeah, neither makes you enjoy the food more, but it's about the easy going attitude vs following byzantine arbitrary rules.
for example the etiquette is learning them they HAVE to twirl the spaghetti with the fork in the spoon before they eat it, while the western guy (obviously an american) isn't doing that at all. once again because a lot of japanese believe you HAVE to eat it that way. I like to upset people by eating french fries with chopsticks
The poster of this vid obviously didn't understand anything. This scene doesn't contrast asian and western way of eating. It contrasts enjoying food or not enjoying it, it contrasts enjoying life or not enjoying it. That's the point of this scene, and i guess it's obvious for which of thse two alternatives the film wants us to choose. :) One of the best films ever.
For Japanese Making sound is a qualification of a dashing man (いなせな男) When eating noodles. (Edokko) meanig a man living in Tokyo loves to make a noise at eating noodles.
Hahaha they are eating spaghetti as they eat udon or other japanese noodles xD, I find it difficult tu slurp spaghetti that way haha with udon is really easy because it's a lot more slippery, so it's better to slup it cuz it's really hard to take it with the Chop sticks! XD
Noodles was one of China's gifts to the world. CHN don't need machines to make noodles. Slurping noodles is thee correct way to eat noodles, especially hot soup noodles.
If it really was about enjoying food, then there wouldn't have had the part about putting cheese or not, because cheese alters the taste of the dish. Since they're careful about putting cheese or not depending on what kind of dish it was, this scene is more about etiquette rather than enjoyment.
It's the darnedest thing; I suffer from misophonia (as I have since long, LONG before I became aware of the word, so no bandwagoneer am I), amd the noises he/ultimately they are making bother me much less than the noises SHE made did. Maybe it's because the former honestly sound less natural and human.
It's delicate, but definite. At first I thought perhaps the irony could be lost on a native viewer, but it appears as though she details it quite well. Though, I must say, watching all of them slurp spaghetti was quite painful...
@M4rsu but I thought we liked food for the taste.. not how we eat it, or how its presented. Psht, semantics. HA. You aren't going to slurp something that tastes like shit now are you
@kw271 I thought Japan was purposely trying to be assimilated by the West, since Asia (China, North Korea, and South Korea to be specific) in the east had immense Anti-Japanese sentiments (before WWII, when America started to do it). Then when WWII started, it was extremely hard because of the propaganda floating around.

I get a feeling that guy was trolling them the entire time.
[01:35] this camera closing in is simply the best part of the scene to me
Wow, I see that she is still alive at 91 years old
If you have never seen this movie, you really need to check it out. It's hallarious!

while a lot of japanese seem to think you HAVE to eat spaghetti this way
I think the Italians would be upset too.
The movie opens on a equally ludicrous “how to eat ramen” bit, so I’m tempted to say you’ve got it!
"Johnny cheese and hot" dem captions!

You're right...it's entrancing LOL JK.
Poor Noodle-sensei. Good thing she accepted what the students wanted to do though.
I need to see this film again.
I feel like pasta tonight...
This was a classic
Geniaal de max eigenlijk! Waauw wat een scène! :)

Ok now I want ramen and spaghetti at same time
Yeah, but still, this scene isn't comparing Western Vs Japanese way of eating spaghetti. And, yeah, neither makes you enjoy the food more, but it's about the easy going attitude vs following byzantine arbitrary rules.
This is what happens when you go to a French restaurant and order spaghetti...
for example the etiquette is learning them they HAVE to twirl the spaghetti with the fork in the spoon before they eat it, while the western guy (obviously an american) isn't doing that at all.
once again because a lot of japanese believe you HAVE to eat it that way.

"The dirty gaijin"
Great. Now I want Ramen

This scene kills me and I don't even know why.
oh god I died watching this scene
I've tried slurping noodles but I almost chocked. I guess I don't have the technique... yet.. Although I will keep trying.
Hahaha they are eating spaghetti as they eat udon or other japanese noodles xD, I find it difficult tu slurp spaghetti that way haha with udon is really easy because it's a lot more slippery, so it's better to slup it cuz it's really hard to take it with the Chop sticks! XD
Like a vacuum
Genius!
Noodles was one of China's gifts to the world. CHN don't need machines to make noodles.
Slurping noodles is thee correct way to eat noodles, especially hot soup noodles.
Many types of noodles from different countries.

I see irony in this. Since in Japan it's okay to slurp when eating soba.
I wonder if anyone choked doing this part
yeah...you're so right for the taser..HANAHANHA!!! can't stop laughing!!
It's the darnedest thing; I suffer from misophonia (as I have since long, LONG before I became aware of the word, so no bandwagoneer am I), amd the noises he/ultimately they are making bother me much less than the noises SHE made did. SPA-ghetti
Bwahahahha that gaijin was evil!
That, in fact, may be the very point of this scene.
It's delicate, but definite. At first I thought perhaps the irony could be lost on a native viewer, but it appears as though she details it quite well. Though, I must say, watching all of them slurp spaghetti was quite painful...
You guys are weird. Just kidding. :D Man, that video sure is funny though! The woman at 2:54 sounds like someone was using a taser or something. XD
2:54 taser sounds? XDDD
🍝
i was expecting to see jackie chan suddenly bursting out and fighting in the restaurant
lol too used to slurping noodles in Japan. =]
@itwillbealright Nope.
Sounds like they are inhaling it..
it all ended up sounding like the beginning of a jav video
sub title in English is terrible. What is this !
There are no English subtitles, just automatic transcription of the audio.
spaghetti alle vongole =P
damn those girls are.... wow... aha
so much slurping all at one time!!!
lol.. follow the gaijin.. =D
AMERICA!
@daver667 omae kangaesugida. EAT AND ENJOY K THANKS.
@M4rsu but I thought we liked food for the taste.. not how we eat it, or how its presented. Psht, semantics. HA. You aren't going to slurp something that tastes like shit now are you
