I’ve always been a “natural” dancer. (Mom has a pic of me “dancing” when I was just 18months old. 🫣) I was SURROUNDED by bluegrass and “hillbilly” country music from birth. On the radio, it was “Classic” ‘70’s-‘80’s Country, ‘70’s Disco, and ‘70’s-‘80’s Pop/Hip-Hop. (Mom ALSO had record’s from the ‘20’s-‘50’s and my Dad had a “1970’s Country Music Band”.) I would often go with them (starting at 7yo) on his Saturday Night “gigs” to help with the Venue’s “microphone and amplifier ‘sound quality’.” (I also danced the night away with Mom!!) As I grew older, I “copied” moves from the “era(s)” Television Shows. I “soaked in music and moves” from Country, Disco, Pop, Contemporary, Ballroom, Jazz, Hip-Hop, etc., to create my OWN “unique dance style”.
When my youngest was in Elementary School, I choreographed a FULL, 5 MINUTE dance routine (at the request of a DIFFERENT 3rd grade teacher for HER class) for an “end-of-the-year”, Elementary School (K-5) “Talent Show”. (Sadly, 😔 “Music and the Arts” are no longer “curriculum-worthy”). I chose the song (against her “wishes”🤭) Cotton-Eyed Joe”, and “took inspiration” from both “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” and “The Beverly Hillbillies”. I wanted it to be “quirky, unique and comical”, but MAINLY a “HAY-LOAD 🤗 OF FUN” for the kids AND their Parent(s)/Audience!!
I began with the “basics” of music. (Listening to songs in 4/4 & 3/4 time(s).) Once the kids had that down, I broke the class into four “groups” and began to teach them my pre-planned, “DANCE EXTRAVAGANZA”!! It took the ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR to teach/learn/practice/perfect!! (ONLY 1hr, 2x/week). We won!! 👏🏻👏🏻 But MOST IMPORTANTLY, “my kids” HAD A BLAST!! 💥 To this day, 20+ YEARS LATER, it is the “TALK OF THE SCHOOL”!!
I suppose what I want “beginners” to realize is this….💁🏼‍♀️
IT IS NEVER TOO LATE!! 🙂‍↔️ IT IS ACHIEVABLE!! 🙂‍↕️ YOU CAN DO IT!! 👍🏻 DON’T GIVE UP!! 🫨 NEVER BE “EMBARRASSED”!! 😬 YOU “DO” YOU!! 🤩
“AGE” is JUST A NUMBER!! (🙋🏼‍♀️ 57yo, and STILL dance “like I’m 20yo”!!) LAST, but certainly not in the LEAST….HAVE THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE!! 😊
