The thing that kills me every time is that we know people need water. We very scientifically know how long disallowing people to drink water will kill them in variable humidity and temperature conditions through years of experimentation and data collection. These deaths are tantamount to murder in my view.

Because it is. Just like denying shelter, and food and clean water is. All these things are critical needs we know a human doesn't survive without. I always asked myself both as a child and as an adult. Why do we understand what is not acceptable for our pets, but not for human beings? If you deny a dog shelter, water, or food, or neglect their hygiene? You get charged for that, jail time for that even. We know what isn't ok. It should be frankly simple, any human being who denies a human beings ability to obtain basic needs for survival, is attempting murder. I'll stand on this hill of thought.

Great point. Someone should make a graft/table that would inform the workers what their danger zones are ( like the blood alcohol one which has male/female, weight, amt of drinks, time then accurately estimates the persons blood alcohol level) and then disseminate it far and wide. At least they'd have to info to protect themselves until we can get the laws changes.

According to OSHA regulations, agricultural establishments with 11 or more hand laborers in the field on any given day must:
Provide potable drinking water to workers in the field
Provide toilets and handwashing facilities when workers perform field work for more than 3 hours in a day (including transportation time to and from the field)
Additionally, drinking water must be provided at all times, regardless of the duration of field work. The regulations emphasize the importance of clean and cool drinking water, served in single-use cups.

We would have everyone go into a room that was kept fairly cold, watch a bit of TV, drink our water, and sometimes get popsicles. 15 minutes, but prevented many injuries and problems in the manufacturing line. Why can’t people literally feeding us get this?

Human beings should never be treated with such disregard. The fact that all the farmer's consider is dollars and cents and not the lives of their employees makes me wonder who raised these people? Who influenced them during their formative years to grow up being ok treating fellow human beings inhumanely? We're all just brothers and sisters from different mothers and misters.
    THIS HAS GOT TO STOP!
The red states are already taking away what little protections workers had. While simultaneously pushing laws that lower the age to be employed. How long until it's one of our kids being treated like...animals? Slaves? I don't know, I don't have the words without cussing to describe what this is. Have things changed, or were we lucky? At the time I got the impression that they felt they were lucky to have us. I was paid extra for the cost of my driving out to their farm, for example. If they worked in those fields for 16 years, they deserve citizenship! They should not have to wait that long. 1-2 years should be enough to be able to live and work here. Immigrants prove themselves every day and get no credit or respect. I've stayed with them in the worker shacks and the shacks are like dirt floor sheds where the whole family lives in one room. They work in the heat from daylight to sunset. I've picked strawberries and garlic plus worked for the Forestry Department cutting firebreaks and that's the hottest I have ever been. I don't know how they do it. I only lasted a few days. Even at $13.83 an hour in 2001, was not worth it. We almost died. (At least we felt like we were going to die) . We couldn't do it fulltime. The other people with me could work a few days, then take a couple off to recharge. This country was founded by immigrants. Without immigrants, we would have never been great. We are still great, no matter what anyone says. America is still the greatest country. Now let's act like it. "Migrants Are Great Americans!" WE WON'T GO BACK.

I am in my early 60s and retired at 53. Lots of people gave me pushback because they had difficulty grasping the concept of not working if you don’t have to. I looked at my life as stages. I earned everything I have now through a lot of hard work, but I owe it to myself to “stop and smell the roses” in my final stage of life. In my case I left the country after I retired and live in Latin America. It allowed me to get away from all the negative things happening in America while appreciating my new environment. I have yet to meet anyone who regrets retirement.

Nice way to retire. For me, I believe retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My wife and I has spent same number of years in the civil service, she is investing through a wealth manager and myself through the 401k. We both still earning towards having our retirement.

Not catching up with her profits over the years, but at least I earn more. I'm making money even before retiring, and my retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.

Farm workers, roofers, UPS drivers, outdoor camp counselors, and a myriad of other professions have the the same problem here, but we don't KNOW each other. If they want to make a change, start charging overseers and bosses with homicide charges when they force workers to work in extreme heat/dangerous weather conditions. Alternatively, maybe companies can alter hours so that workers aren't as exposed to heat by starting very early in the morning or possibly overnight if they need to bring in a particularly large harvest. I'm in Texas, some landscapers start work at 3 or 4 in the morning to avoid the heat of the day. Either way, there has to be a change, military has flag conditions for their personnel outdoors.

As a landscaper in the south, I can only imagine how terrible it is in a field in full sun. We have to take breaks, and we allow our employees to stop on those days that reach 100 when he needs to. We at least have some shade from time to time at the residential properties we service. This year, I got poison ivy that caused a systemic immune response and caused my hair to start falling out and rosacea all over my face. I have about half the hair I used to. And of course there’s skin cancer. I’m so thankful for farm workers. I wish this country could go back to small scale farming. You’ll never hear me complain about the price of food.

I was a professional safety manager in industry for 4 decades. You betcha they see you as disposable; I've literally had a plant manager tell me he could save so much money by not spending anything on worker safety that he could afford to kill people. "So what's it going to cost me, a million, a million five? I can afford that." I had to quit that job to get him fired, but I did get him fired. The problem is that most of the people at the top have the same attitude.

  • @benc6503
    @benc6503 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

The naysayers against rules about this will say something like "If the employer forces this, potential employees will simply walk off of the job." I'm sure that's sometimes the case.
But clearly, there's a pretty significant chunk who have no other options, or else there would be no one doing this at all.
Fast food always seems to be able to hire someone, despite conditions that mean the average person can't even afford to take that job (pay is too low, yet working conditions can often prevent most second jobs).
There's always someone who seems to be willing to drive for Amazon package delivery, even though the vans have spy machines that are akin to a driving instructor sitting next to you. I barely got through the driving course and the DMV test. 8-10 hours of this? I don't think I'd make it through the first day. I certainly wouldn't last the month, or even the week.
And it seems there's always some who still work in farms.
In a way, I actually hope someone finally perfects harvesting machines for the remaining farm jobs that haven't been completely automated yet. I know that automating picking fruit has been an particularly difficult problem to solve.

Thank you for getting this out in front of the public's eyes. People need to know. Greed and power corrupt if gone unchecked. These United States are late addressing social & quality of life issues as supported by the "huge" economic & society gaps we are witnessing today. Greed & power are our weaknesses in America, not our strengths. As a Nation we must reign in any & every elected or appointed CIVIL SERVANT and stop the corruption that plagues our democratic Republic. It runs deep as proven by the highest Court in the land and most recently, PROJECT 2025.
