Please don’t forget that an American tried to explain Eurovision, he concentrated a lot on the weird / fun parts of the competition and no how serious a lot of countries take it sending a lot of good quality music 😊
I think one important thing that isn’t talked about in this video is the whole ESC culture in Europe. We have watched it ever since we were children, then later with group of friends with drinking games and then with our own children. Bars have ESC nights, events, even movie theaters screen ESC. Even not all are big fans, most of the people watch it or at least check out, who won this year.
As a long time Italian Eurovision fan, I can't believe Eurovision is such a big deal in other countries. Here it's only become somewhat mainstream in 2021 after Måneskin won, and the Grand Final wasn't even aired on the main tv channel until 2016. Whenever I spoke about it to my classmates and friends they had no idea what it was. You would imagine the older generations might know it from when Italy participated in the past, but no, my dad had never even heard of it before we talked about it, and he still considers it a stupid modern thing, despite him loving the Italian song that won in 1964, without even knowing it participated in the contest back then. The reason Rai stopped participating must be that nobody in Italy cared about it to begin with. Sanremo on the other hand has always been the TV event of the year and kept its relevance throughout the decades, being a big part of the Italian music industry. That's why it's not a Eurovision national selection, because nobody watches or votes at Sanremo with Eurovision in mind. And that might even be one of the reasons we do well at Eurovision every year. Although thanks to Måneskin's win and the 2022 Turin edition, the contest has already grown a lot in popularity. So, every country must have a different relationship with the contest. From Iceland absolutely loving it to Italy only now starting to get into it, from Sweden and Norway taking it so seriously to France and Germany not even caring much. The only thing that matches what you described, in Italy is football culture. I watched a video of people in a pub in Sweden watching Loreen's win on the screens and it was unbelievable to me, it was the kind of scene I thought were only possible for football, but for a song contest.
@@ehmzed One of my all time favourites from ESC is Italy’s Alice & Franco Battiato’s I treni di Tozeur ❤️ ! In Finland we even had Zecchino d’Oro singing competition aired in the 80’s 😁 I always thought it was a bit weird 😄
@@ehmzed As a Swiss I feel similar. The situation is a bit different (it has always been on the main national TV channel and I think everyone knows what it is). But it‘s not really a big deal. The news will tell us who participates for Switzerland and afterwards who has won. I never heard from someone who organized a party to watch it and I never really heard people talking about it before or after the competition. I notice every year that friends from outside of Switzerland take it much more seriously than we do here.
@@Prafik614 I watched the ESC performance of the song you said right now, I didn't get it at all but that's probably because I'm too young to appreciate that. It's cool it's one of your favourites though, what I love about Eurovision is how it lets us discover music and artists from all sorts of countries that we wouldn't have otherwise even got the chance to know. Lo Zecchino d'Oro in Finland?? Haha wow! Was it still called Zecchino d'Oro or... Kultainen Paljetti(?) or something? And yeah I'm not very familiar with the show, only with some songs that came out of it in the past and are very famous and still taught in kindergartens I think. But the one time I watched some scenes of the show it did seem quite weird indeed lol. I mean, just children singing without a clue, probably forced by their parents.
@@ehmzed It was translated as ”Lapset laulavat lapsille” = Children Singing to Children. At the time I didn’t even realize it was a singing competition, for me it was just children singing. Back then, in the 80’s there was not many tv programmes for children, this was one of those few, so everybody watched it. I think for me the weird part was, as a finnish child, how lively the children were in their performance 😄 Sometimes the main singer could be nervous but back choir were giving their all, always, all of them. With hands in their back, they would sway, nod their heads in sync, smile from ear to ear. I used to do gymnastics as a child in the 80’s and it was very East German influenced sport, with horrible training, painfull and mentally violent and we always had to smile like maniacs, even I felt like crying. I always was wondering, do these children in Lapset Laulaa Lapsille, really like singing that much or are they acting. I agree, ESC is great way to hear about artist, you would never find without ESC. And I love how at least I will listen to those songs and think, if I like them or not. In the radio, the same song would just play in the backgroung or in the Spotify recommentation i could just skip the song after 10 seconds. And fans are like a huge bookclub, we talk about music, what we liked about the song and what we didn’t like about it. You don’t have that anywhere else 🤩
an important distinction is that it's not a SINGING competition it's a SONG competition, a lot of different aspects matter here, vocals, staging, the song production,... and while this video makes it seem a bit like a joke, it's a huge deal and a lot of artists have gained popularity through eurovision like abba for example
@@robertroberts8648 there are still other artists like måneskin who are very successful thanks to eurovision ^^ and a lot of contestants are very popular in their home countries afterwards several songs of this year's contest have been charting in multiple countries ever since the grand final
@@mel_ooo Yeah I can confirm Marija Šerifović who won for Serbia back in 2007 is one of the biggest and most popular artists in Serbia thanks to Eurovision
The Big 5 countries don't 'deliberately send singers who suck'. They tend not to send people who are already Big Names (although this was not true in the earlier decades) and they tend to submit particular types of song that they feel are 'Eurovision' in nature, which are not necessarily the top type of music in their home countries. What he described as 'Troll' entries are often some of the best - and definitely the most memorable. They are what I watch it for tbh.
wrong. Italy doesn't vote for an Eurovision song, we have Sanremo that has been a thing before Eurovision even existed in fact when Italy took a break from esc Sanremo was still a thing
eurovision was held in Liverpool this year - around 3km from my home and it was a massive celebration for the main event and week leading up to it throughout the entire city. We had an estimated 500,000 extra tourists for the week and it has been estimated that the financial benefits in future tourism is going to be work tens of millions of ££££s over the next few years The event held here was so good that the chairman/director whatever made a statement to the effect that he would be happy to hold the contest here every year.
The Eurovision village and all the pop up events throughout the city over the week of Eurovision were amazing. The whole city got involved and it was so so much fun. Honestly it seemed like the whole of town was just so friendly and fun. Everyone was there to have the best time and it was great. Couldn’t have picked a better city in my opinion, it 100% showcased what our city is about whilst still holding Ukraine at the very centre. Incredible times.
It's my guilty pleasure to watch Americans watch all these videos about eurovision. As a European I've watched ESC since I was ten. And for me it's like yeah we're crazy and proud of it😆
@@karlJCompton i haven't watched eurovision at all which is really embarrassing considering im Australian and we are in it but ive watched a little from some years ago and i love it
The thing about not wanting to win or the big countries sending bad entries on purpose is just a meme... it's not true. Everyone wants to win it but you can't have a great song every year. Sometimes you just have to send a trash song or a troll entry because it's still the best one from all that applied that year :)
To be honest, an ex French TV director has confessed that he literally received the order not to win the Eurovision in the 90s. It seems to have changed though
It's not directly true, but the voting has been a mess for decades. This is where large singers/bands are not going to risk going in, why impact their reputation on a low score if it has nothing to do with the performance? And people who are actually talented, and have a chance of making it? Same thing, why have that attached to their name? So you get countries like the UK, who produce music in every genre charting across the planet and a constant stream of talent, who almost only get people trying to enter who are people with no other options or chances of really making it. Or just those not great, who have to perform live and it shows. Last year was the first time someone really talented took the chance, and even then I doubt he would have been as high without all the Ukraine help the UK has done. The end result is the same as though they were tryjng not to win.
To be honest, the Eurovision is great, as you can never know who will win. Sometimes the winner song is pop, sometimes rock. Sometimes it's the serious song and sometimes the opposite takes the first place. Some of these songs might seem as a joke to outsiders, however, many are true winners in their own countries (at the same time it can win votes of their own region due to similar tastes). :)
The band that Finland sent in 2006 is Lordi, the band that won for Finland. The 2nd best they got was this year with Käärijä. You need to react to his song Cha Cha Cha. You'll never get it out of your head again 😂😂
@@majorkilljoy Ugh don't even go there. We learned from 2021 after 0 points and then sent Sam, who got us the result of us hosting Eurovision because Ukraine couldn't. Tbf though, the song they did last year absolutely banged and i'll always listen to it because it's so good! ❤
@@Nattie666 personally I weren't too keen on Sam's song from 22. Now the year before in 21, proper tune that and definitely should have got higher than it did
The 2010 Eurovision flashmob by Madcon, during the show, is probably the best way to get an idea of the size and scope of the contest. It will also give you a window into the Eurovision house-party culture. Well worth checking out.
I still watch sometimes the video here on TH-cam (sadly its slighty out of sync with the visual and madcon sadly has only a different cut version on their channel
I've watched Eurovision every year since I was a kid, over 30 years. I absolutely love it. This year's was outstanding! You seriously need to watch it, JT. Anna would love it too. 😊
People now actually hold Eurovision parties at home, dress up and watch Eurovision. There have been some really good singers and performers on Eurovision, the rock band that one for Finland are called Lordi.
It's not a singing contest. It's a song contest. You don't get voted on because of your singing abilities. It's about the song itself and the overall package.
It always hurts seeing amarican trying to explain ESC 😭 but I’m happy more people are getting into it. Also you absolutely should watch it Also the video that’s explaining is kinda outdated and gets a few things wrong but it’s still one of the best ways for outsiders to understand
@@cookies6455 As a European, my impression is that the American states are in many ways as different as the European countries. Yes, you all have the same language, but here in Europe most people can speak English, so we can also communicate with each other. A song competition between the various states is the way to do it. In addition, you can invite the Canadian provinces and territories, and perhaps Mexico too. Don't expect it to be as epic as Eurovision right away. Give it a few years to establish itself, support the competition and as an audience. If they do the same in South America, Asia and Africa, we can meet in a decade or two for the world final.
Please watch and react to this year's contest (2023) hosted by the UK on behalf of Ukraine, and make sure you watch the opening act (there is a surprise appearance by a royal), and Sam Ryder's interval act with a surprise appearance by a member of Queen. Also the song Love, Love, Peace, Peace. Måns Zelmerlöw (the winner from the year before) and Petra Mede create the perfect Eurovision Performance.
Love, Love, Peace, Peace is a masterpiece but still I think it’s also maybe the worlds biggest inside joke and probably people outside ESC won’t get it at all 😅
Please do more Eurovision reactions! Seems like its getting more hype in the US(im from Europe so its kinda weird to me how its not already so popular)
Eurovision is an *event* when I was a kid in the 80’s me and my sister were allowed to stay up with duvets and sweets and the whole family would have our own score cards to see who got closest to the winner. Also with you being a uk fan, you need to look for videos about Sir Terry Wogan commentating. ❤
I love Eurovision. The songs are always original pieces and the performances are more entrancing every year. Sure, not every entrant is amazing to me, but they all have SOMETHING and the entire evening's entertainment for both semi final nights and for the final is something we look forward to here. Britain did VERY well last year, came runner up to Ukraine! You should react to some eurovision songs sometime. My favs this year were Finland and also Croatia. Croatia I didn't get at first but its actually a protest song about dictators and Finland? That's about Cha cha cha baby!
I love Eurovision hits. I put them on my alarm clock. That way, I always seem to be able to force myself to wake up at least an hour beforehand to switch them off before they start to play.
I'd really enjoy seeing more of your thoughts. The last Eurovison just took place, you could watch a summary and then choose a few songs/performances to see in full. Or you could watch some of the more iconic performances over the course of Eurovision history too! There's a lot to cover!
I recommend watching this other video that explains this contest better. Its called "The Ultimate Guide To The Eurovision Song Contest". I recommend u watch it to actually SEE what kind of songs are sent. Great reaction!
If you’d like to see to want the contest is like, but also get more information, I recommend to watch the song ‘Love Love Peace Peace’. It’s an interval performance from the hosts of 2016 in Sweden. It mentions some classic Eurovision acts and kinda explains what it’s all about.
my hometown liverpool hosted this year on behalf of ukraine who won it last year but couldn't host for obvious reasons if your interested in watching one this years was a good one
American Song Contest with Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg was fun last year. All the states and territories competing like the ESC format, and they got the ESC feel with artists like Michael Bolton, Macie Gray, Jewel, and Sisqo representing their states. It was low key but the hosts were great. I hope it returns next year.
my problem was that all the participants were picked by the same people. They should really let each state hold their own finals, or at least have them pick their own artists, so it really feels like the artists represent their state, instead of just some random artist getting assigned to a state. As a result, it kinda lacked a bit of the diversity in styles that makes Eurovision so much fun.
🤔 Well, I suppose the only link (or person, as the case may be) that combines ESC and American Song Contest would be Christer Björkman! ASC was said to be an American equivalent of ESC, but was nothing like it.......
It's a really weird thing, but very popular with an almost cult following. Sort of like if Rocky Horror was a song contest! It can be very kitschy and silly, but it can also produce the occasional fantastic music - ABBA became a worldwide phenomenon after winning back in the mid '70s. Also, the element of camp fun is often reflected by the presenters (Graham Norton and before him Sir Terry Wogan have done a great job of making sure that the music is matched with wry comedy).
"Eurovision" is NOT a Swiss "network". The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) - that promotes cooperation among European broadcasters - was seated in Switzerland - and they started this.
As a huge eurovision fan, i would love it if you reacted to anything eurovision related. I was lucky enough to go to Liverpool this year and watch one of the shows sooooo good.
Me and my daughter were there. It was so much fun and the atmosphere was amazing. I’ve never seen so many men in sequins and glitter, besides strictly come dancing. Loved it 😍
i mean, that year it was less glitter than the last yearrs i think? like, 2021 was so silver glitter, like half of them were in that colour scheme xd also im jealous, that sounds nice
@@dagmar0904 as it was my first time, I can’t compare to previous but all I can comment on is my experience and as I live in the middle of a military town, not much sparkle around, as it clashes with army green lol 🤷🏼♀️
You made such a good point about it being like the singing olympics definitely but we sneer at it a little the rest of Europe it’s deadly serious it is an event I ❤️ it please show more Eurovision clips
It's self deprecation in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. Oh we all might laugh a little, but we ALSO religiously watch, vote on our mobile phones even though before hand we said we wouldn't, and like last year when Britain was runner up are so incredibly proud of winning if we do well... Come on... you know we all hurry home and make sure we're in to watch it...
7:57 that was actually a part of the performance. Her whole thing during the song is that she forgets the coreo and messes up. Meanwhile the girl in blue on the right just goes over the top for the performance. "Baila Chicki Chicki" is actually quite the bop that you wont get out of your head.
That's EXACTLY why America should NEVER take part... They cannot understand why you would do ANYTHING and prefer not to WIN - They NEVER apologise and don't do SELF-DEPRECATION !!!
If you wanted to watch a whole final of Eurovision then 2014/2015/2017 are probably good ones to watch in terms of an open contest. Otherwise, SchlagerLucas has compilations of every song performed by a country in the contest (so there's one for all UK entries, one for all Spain entries etc). I'm from the UK so this year I was just wishing that Sam Ryder was competing again for us after he did so well in 2022 - the latest one was a good spectacle (we hosted on behalf of Ukraine) but was kind of soured by the 'runaway winner' results reveal which was why I didn't include it above.
If you're going to watch more Eurovision, you really want to find videos that have subtitles of the lyrics (even for the ones singing in English). Sometimes you need to see what the act are singing, just to make sure you heard what you thought you did.
Fun fact, america did have your own song contest like Eurovision for 1 year as an episodic thing instead of a 3 night thing, but it didn't get brought back for a "second season" due to a lack of watching numbers.
Hey JT - another great video, thanks. I'd disagree on the presenter's comment that the top 5 deliberately send in bad acts to make up for the advantage. Everyone wants to win. In terms of money hosting the contest, there was a situation when Ireland won in 1992, 1993 and 1994, then again in 1996 (4 times in 5 years). That must have hurt. It was only from 2004 that a semi-final was added (due to the number of countries competing and hence making the show too long). This was when the automatic entry for the "big 5" began. And yes, you should do more Eurovision reacts - lots of great moments. Would love to see them, very much enjoy your channel :)
they did try to do a US version of ESC last year called American Song Contest and it was not well received by many in the ESC community and many in the US in general.
I think an American version of the Eurovison Song Contest would be cool. The only issue is that many countries in the 2 Americas aren't especially politically stable, which would exclude them being hosts. Still, I think it would be a great way to increase cultural interaction. There was an American song contest that was modelled after Eurovision, but unfortunately I believe that was only limited to US states, which really misses the point of international cultural relations.
Yeah No, No one wants to send in a bad song. But you have so many countries with different types of… well , humor I guess, that it can be a rather huge miss one year but then something similar can be a hit another year. No one really wants to ”troll” but just have fun. It may be the rumor of countries wanting to ”suck” comes from sore losers. 😂 Nah I don’t know. But it’s an old rumor and not relevant today. Also, countries that gets 0 points is not the same as not having people voting for them at all but they don’t get enough. It’s how the result of the point system works.
They already did attempt a Eurovision Song Contest in America in 2022...it didn't go over so well here (didn't help that it was going directly up against American Idol). American Song Contest Still streamable on the streaming service that has a bird with big tail plumage as it's icon...that's also where you can stream Eurovision in the US live or for replay (even this past year...2023)!!!
America has technically been represented. Katrina and the waves (a British/American band) won in 1997 for UK. Katrina Leskanich the lead singer is from Topeka Kansas
The last bit on the video,he's 100% spot on about America joining Eurovision. It would be a laugh to see who you would send. Wether you'd be serious or just have a laugh like all us do most years 🤔
Sam ryder last years runner up was not mediocre he was amazing. He would have won had it not been for the awful war in Ukraine so everyone of course wanted to give ukraine the win to show them our love and support. So this years event was held in the uk for Ukraine and it was an amazing spectacle with drag queens celebrating love and acceptance it was beautiful. As a brit made me so proud. Although are entry this year wasnt that great so we were no where near winning 😂. Also cha cha cha was totally robbed by sweden the crowd made there voices known in typical brit fashion 🤣
Cha cha cha now when I went to vote for them ( I'm in uk) all I was getting was an engaged tone so I did it 3 more times still didn't get through " usually you get Graham Norton voice telling you thank you You have voted for ( name of country ) etc
Him coming second was 100% political as was Ukraine winning. If the war in Ukraine wasn’t a thing, the UK would have come in its usual place within the bottom 5, he only came 2nd because of the war in Ukraine
The people who come second always claim... we was robbed🤣 Stefania was the best winner in recent years, by far, and totally deserved their win. I did`nt get the hype around Sam Ryder and his song was boring for me, nothing new or close to original. I don`t like this years winner very much because it`s also just more of the same old, same old but it won. I voted for Finland and thought his song and performance were interesting... judging by the performance Sweden`s song should have been called an Ode to A Tanning Bed. 🤪
Riverdance was the half time show, while votes were being counted, the puppet Ireland sent was on children's tv in the '90s and actually had released a cd, we also sent jedward from x factor, also the song rock n roll kids was an Irish winner, look it up, its an absolute tune! Johnny logans songs too, i recommend looking up the compilations
I watched Eurovision on TH-cam one year, but it was a past performance. It was rather interesting. I also watched a mini documentary on Eurovision, and it showed highlights on each year of the contest, except for years where the video was lost. I dont remember the count, but I want to say 3 years are missing from the collection. 1968 was the first year Eurovision was filmed in color. Since the actual movie about Eurovision, there was talk by the Eurovision committed about creating 2 new franchises, where one would be for the Anericas, and one for Asia. If these ever get created, who knows how well it would work out. I heard Australia would be moved the Asian franchise, if an Asian version of Eurovision was created. I believe the Americas version would be called Amerivision, if it was created.
@swedishmetalbear I thought it would be a version covering both North and South America, not just the US. The music industry in the US makes no true effort to promote certain artists, and music styles. Many European groups and artists are unable to secure music contracts here, and sometimes, artists from the US, like Anastacia, also couldn't get her music played on radio, because after listening to a UK podcast, she mentions that she was blacklisted by 1 radio company, that Sony Music did not release her 3rd album in the US, and focused on the countries where she is successful. She didn't mention the company by name, but it was iHeart Radio (then Clear Channel Radio). That company owns so many radio stations in all formats, that they decide who succeeds, and who doesn't. As for American Song Contest, the industry here does not want to follow European music standards, and I believe this was done on purpose to make it a flop, so it won't be tried again. I'll have to see if I can find video clips online, that won't cost me anything to watch, just to see how bad the US version really was.
An American DID win Eurovision as part of a group. In 1985,Katrina and the Waves had a worldwide hit with Waking On Sunshine”. Fast forward to 1997 and the band, with an American born lead singer In Katrina Leskenich, represented the United Kingdom and won with the song “Love Shine A Light”.
3:53 Sorta happened this year actually! They didn’t all send their absolute best, but they were all good. Usually there’s at least one slacker out of the 5.
If you want to react to some Eurovision songs, SchlagerLucas has, like, a load of videos with short recaps of Eurovision songs. Individual nations in Eurovision, winners, runner ups, and last places in Eurovision, etc.
Winning countries as of 2023 Ireland & Sweden are tied with the most wins at 7. France, Luxembourg, The Netherlands & The United Kingdom all have 5 wins Israel has 4 Denmark, Italy, Norway & Ukraine have 3 Austria, Germany, Spain & Switzerland have 2 & Finally Monaco, Belgium, Estonia, Latvia, Turkey, Greece, Finland, Serbia, Russia, Azerbaijan & Portugal round it up with 1 win each Yugoslavia also won in 1989 but the country has since disbanded & the separate countries that made up the former state have all competed as independent nations.
The nearest thing America has ever got to being a part of the Eurovision Song Contest is Katrina from Katrina and the Waves who represented the UK in 1997 AND WON! 😊 Love, Shine a Light! Great song! 😀
As an American, I do not want the United States in Eurovision! It is perfectly fine the way it is and I am excited every year that I do not have to see an American on it. They will ruin it😑
When I was a kid, not being aware of the politics behind the competition, I would get to stay up late to watch the voting and got really excited when the UK was in contention. I wish I was still a kid.
America did have their own version of this that aired on NBC hosted by Snoop Dogg and Kelly Clarkson. It was essentially states competing against each other. Oklahoma won by sending American K-Pop star AleXa.
The competition has just taken place last month and was hosted here in the UK. We actually came second last year with a song performed by Sam Ryder (who has to be the most modest and nicest guy in pop music anywhere). The winner last year was Ukraine in a blatantly political sympathy vote to which everyone just said, "Yeah, fair enough." For obvious reasons, they have other pressing matters to deal with right now and could not host, so the UK got the gig and in an inspired, stroke of genius, chose to host in Liverpool (home of so many musical stars) and put on a fantastic show for Ukraine with the city turning yellow and blue for the week. The grand final was an spectacular and was won by Sweden, meaning they will host in 2024, 50 years on from Abba's win in 1974, which made them superstars. The only disappointment was that the UK's entry by Mae Muller, the catchy "Instead I Wrote a Song" (check out the clever break-up related lyrics), only came 25th out of 26, which I thought was worthy not of winning but of a much higher place.
Ukraine's entry was fantastic last year. They did not come close to winning this year. So quit that claim that it was just political. And yes, the UK came in second last year, and second last this year. Again, it is the song's performance, not that the rest of Europe hates the UK (although it is often true too).
Sam Ryder's song was good last year and by rights, we should have won. But Ukraine was always going to win out of sympathy due to the war. Their song wasn't the best at all. But they were never going to be able to host the contest this year so whoever came second would be the most likely candidate...and guess what? Everyone voted for us so we came second! After coming last or virtually last over the past few years due to other political issues like Brexit, we all of a sudden did so well! It was only because no-one else wanted the cost and expense of hosting the contest this year, especially with the current cost of living crisis...the only reason we did well and came second was so the burden fell on us to pay for it all and host this year's contest. And people here are gullible enough to believe it was entirely because of the song that we came second... Nothing against Sam Ryder though, like I say, it was a good song and he performed it brilliantly but there was no way we were going to win last year and there was no way we were going to do well again this year...unless they wanted us to bail another country out...or indeed the rest of Europe as a punishment for leaving the EU...
There are three hardcore rules in Eurovision, 1 can't vote for your own country (it has been addressed), 2 no playback, artists HAVE TO sing, 3 you can only have 6 performers on stage. For everything else, anything goes.
its hosted next year by Sweden, after they won in Liverpool(UK) this year(UK were hosting on behalf of ukraine who won in 2022 because of the war and UK finished 2nd so we were asked to host instead)
React to Cha Cha Cha from this year. It's a banger and really brought in the most publicity Finland has gotten in a long time and made Käärijä a celebrity over night.
I actually loved the Uk song last year which is the 1st time in years ive said that. Ukraine won but we came 2nd so we hosted it this year due to the war going on in Ukraine.
Watch all the famous people who have taken part in the Eurovision song contest and won it. Even if they didn't win it, they were excellent performers. Most of them at least!
You missed this year's Eurovision by a few weeks, you can find the whole thing on TH-cam (though I think you'll need a VPN to watch). Sweden and Israel's tally in the video is no longer up to date since this video is a few years old and they've both won in the time since.
Please do a deep dive into Eurovision start from about 2003 and catch up on the past 20 years. You could start with looking at the winners and runners up for the past five years and then do the deep dive. To see what Eurovision is now and how it’s evolved in recent years.

Loreen won Back in 2012 (that was the year the Grannies competed)with Euphoria for context.
I'm Romanian so i think i can share this with confidence. One thing that America will not understand EVER about Eurovision is that, this song contest is to feel good, make a show ,enjoy and celebrate yourself as a country/culture and other countries and a way to land support to a country that maybe didn't have a good year and hey if we happened to win fine that is great and if we don't that is fine to we had a blast at least. I feel that America would take this to seriously and just want to win. Don't understand me wrong Eurovision its not a silly contest it means so much for us Europeans it brings us closer as a continent through music but the wholesomeness of the ''we are here to vibe' and vibe only" even if that means we make a fool out of ourselves sometimes is what makes it ten times better and is something that America (USA) doesn't posses because you want to be the worlds best and that does not apply here because is not only about that.
This was eurovision about 15 years ago.. the music quality is much better.. you can tell an American was explaining it. Id love for you to react to eurovision tho! 😂
My home town this year and we rocked it!! My family always have a huge party and we pick countries blind out of a hat and you have to bring food from that county 😂

I think it's pretty accurate for the time, and for being a short summary. It's an older video at this point
Don't forget most of them still think this is "Europe's American Idol"
Basically regurgitating British nonsense while doing it.
The days of ABBA are long gone. It is, now, a joke.
@@robertroberts8648 there are still other artists like måneskin who are very successful thanks to eurovision ^^ and a lot of contestants are very popular in their home countries afterwards
several songs of this year's contest have been charting in multiple countries ever since the grand final

Not to metion Italy absolutely slaps year after year after year.

We had an estimated 500,000 extra tourists for the week and it has been estimated that the financial benefits in future tourism is going to be work tens of millions of ££££s over the next few years
The event held here was so good that the chairman/director whatever made a statement to the effect that he would be happy to hold the contest here every year.
Be fair Liverpool hosted a perfect eurovision. Everything was flawless and I enjoyed every second! :)
You mean Martin Osterdahl? Or someone different
@@charlotteinnocent8752 God noooooo, what have we done that?
So nice when an event makes money not losses it like the olympics.

@@kmassilia Pretty sure that was a Belgian tv director. (unless the French had the same rule)

Also you absolutely should watch it
Also the video that’s explaining is kinda outdated and gets a few things wrong but it’s still one of the best ways for outsiders to understand
If you really want a version of this in the USA, why not set up a 'world song contest' - and only have contestants from America...
ooooh.... i see what you did there. A state contest would be fun, esp. the political voting?
They did that last year it was " The American Song Contest " the first ever one
You could call it the World Series. Maybe invite some Canadians?
@@scottwebb1978 But that was a competition between states in the USA, NOT a competition between countries on the American continent.... :) haha!
@@cookies6455
As a European, my impression is that the American states are in many ways as different as the European countries.
Eurovision is a weird, wonderful, fantastic journey! It would be great to see you do some more reactions to it.
Måns Zelmerlöw (the winner from the year before) and Petra Mede create the perfect Eurovision Performance.
the show is dog shit
Love, Love, Peace, Peace is a masterpiece but still I think it’s also maybe the worlds biggest inside joke and probably people outside ESC won’t get it at all 😅

It's full of men pretending to be women whilst still having beards and buldges

Eurovision is an *event* when I was a kid in the 80’s me and my sister were allowed to stay up with duvets and sweets and the whole family would have our own score cards to see who got closest to the winner. Also with you being a uk fan, you need to look for videos about Sir Terry Wogan commentating. ❤
My home city of Liverpool has just hosted this year's Eurovision on behalf of Ukraine, last year's winners, and it was fantastic for the city!
agreed! i enjoyed living in the host city too
I love Eurovision.
And you've got to have a Eurovision party! I love me a bit of Eurovision

Absolutely. I too, am from Liverpool. The city was buzzin' for the whole week leading up to it. 🎉
Good video, the Eurovision song contest is really fun, i watch it every year lol
Lordi is a great metal band, recently toured with Sabaton and baby metal
You're not comparing the cultural differences of a Continent with those of a single Country, are you?
@@Jadezgvrtk did I say that, or did I just say I enjoyed American Song Contest?
@@brianroberts5048 the way you wrote it, it looks like you were trying to compare the two contest.
That’s why I commented that way.
You should definitely react to the weirdest eurovision performances 😂
As a huge eurovision fan, i would love it if you reacted to anything eurovision related. I was lucky enough to go to Liverpool this year and watch one of the shows sooooo good.
Moldova once had the song which created the all too iconic EPIC SAX GUY!
You should watch „Love love peace peace“ an interval act, when it was held in Sweden

The US is way too competitive, I'm sure you wouldn't be able to send a piss take act to compete. It would seriously offend your sense of superiority.
I'm pretty sure it was a 3 night or more thing. I remember them having semifinals and stuff

They did last year, it was called American Song Contest. It didn't do very well.
Many countries in Europe aren’t politically stable
@@BookNomming ... which can be said about some American countries as well. 🤪

Sam has never griped about it once, and is having a reasonable career now, so all good.
They fixed it because it was the 50th anniversary of ABBA, cha cha cha was easily the most popular, it was daft af
Riverdance was the half time show, while votes were being counted, the puppet Ireland sent was on children's tv in the '90s and actually had released a cd, we also sent jedward from x factor, also the song rock n roll kids was an Irish winner, look it up, its an absolute tune! I’d love you to react to Eurovision 2022, the 2018 one or even Junior Eurovision at some point! You can find the full finales on TH-cam!
The American version was actually done last year. But it flopped there.
JT Don't watch it your eyes will burn and your ears will bleed 🤣🤣✌️ From Scotland
As cheesy as it is, some of those troll songs are fucking bangers and right up my alley

Also, so many amazing songs came from the eurovision that you know but didnt knew
i think their was an American Song Contest once, last year maybe.
Eurovision is the best thing in the world!
Did you know that for exemple that ABBA (1974) and Céline Dion (1988) are both winners of Eurovision. Their careers started thanks to eurovision.
My favourite song in all of eurovision was Norway 2022. It is bonkers and still manages to slap. 🐺👵🍌
Every year its a great watch on tv, you never know how mad or wacky its going to get
124k subs now... well done!
Lørdi are awesome I saw them a few months ago. Still playing the iconic Hard Rock Halliloyah
I hope you start your Eurovision reaction journey. There is a lot of earlier recordings of Eurovision at their TH-cam channel

Sit back and enjoy JT you and Anna will love it it’s so bad it’s good
This was eurovision about 15 years ago.. the music quality is much better.. you can tell an American was explaining it. Id love for you to react to eurovision tho! 😂
Love Eurovision one of my favourite songs was from the grannies
My home town this year and we rocked it!! My family always have a huge party and we pick countries blind out of a hat and you have to bring food from that county 😂
the US did an "American Song Contest" back in 2021 (I think it was) based on a similar idea, but where each state had their own representative.
