The real answer Korea does this is “to mitigate botting in f2p”
When you charge a micro-transaction, you’re attaching a name to the account (along with everything that comes with encouraging more spending).
Botters taking over online games has been an issue since the early wow/maplestory days, and attaching your credit card and risking your account getting banned mitigates a rampant problem where botters have been monopolizing the market to target abd profit off whales, who spend like crazy for “perfect accounts” and more in-game currency.
Incentivizing micro-transactions creates a higher barrier of entry to deter botting sweatshops to exploit making hundreds of accounts and playing them simultaneously to profit off selling “lucky rerolled accounts” or selling gold off the market.
Gating higher progression with a microtransaction obliterates the majority of botting sweatshop issues while still maintaining the “free game” appeal.

MapleStory launched without microtransactions in the US. The game was amazing before they added them. The game was 99% about rolling gacha and selling max roll stat gear on ch1 free market 1

    • @prestonleebenjamin
      @prestonleebenjamin หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I’d argue the real shift happened when botters started taking over the market - all of these games, including wow, diablo, maplestory etc had to completely change their marketing to take into account people that can make 100’s of accounts and play them all on one computer to make 100x the gold one normal player could and then sell accounts/gold through third party and just ruin every economy they could do this in. Just look at lost ark today, the amount of “fueieuyehdiwiw” named bots running in groups ruining the game…
This is when all of the games collectively got way sh*ttier, because they had to introduce all these limiting systems to prevent asian sweatshops from gaining the monolopy of the game market.
In a perfect world, pay 2 win in itself isn’t the worst thing, but when some sweatshop is botting making hundreds of new accounts and selling rare rolls and gold at fractions of the cost of what the company intended, thats what destroyed the market and made every pay2win system incredibly limiting and shifted to specifically targeting WHALES over being fair to everyone.

I'm playing The First Descendant, and there are only two reasons you need to spend money in this game:
    1 - Buy skins.
2 - Buy character slots (this is the most practical one, and they cost about $1 each. You already have 10 slots by default, and the game has 19 Descendants in total).
Even if you play the game, which is completely free, enough to fill all 10 slots, and that takes hundreds of hours, it makes sense to spend a little money on it. It's totally fair at this point.

If you want to have all the character slots (19), you will need to spend around only $9 in Caliber to unlock all the slots. And if you want, and that's totally optional, you can buy skins. I repeat, you just spent hundreds of hours in a free game that has no content behind any paywalls whatsoever, so spending a few bucks is totally fair at this point.
And for the record, having this many characters is totally optional. I'm clearing all the content of the game with only two and having lots of fun. I'm thinking of leveling up a third one just for the fun of making a new build. You probably won't play with all the characters anyway, but if you want to, sure, go for it.

Another way to think of it is: you can earn it in game or you go to work to earn money and then spend the money in the games you like for items that you think look cool on your character.
    Also, all of this:
Servers cost WAY more than that pc on your table.
You need people to maintain those servers. They aren't gonna work for free.
Bandwidth for the servers is WAY more than your ISP bill.
All the people that actually work on the game itself aren't gonna work for free.
There is no such thing as a free to play multiplayer game.
People always want to bag on "whales".
if your an actual free to play player, then you should be THANKING all the whales that play the game you like, because if they weren't whaling, then the game you like to play wouldn't exist very long.

Exactly. These kind of games need this type of monetization to stay alive. It's free to play, live service game.
Warframe is the same, I've played that game on and off for like 9 years and I've never spend a cent on it and it's been fun once you get past the steep learning curve at the beginning. I believe TFD can be the same, although it's gonna be harder because games like Warframe already exist on the market.
