I had a 10' by 12" factory pellet stove window shatter at "candle" temps. The stove had run in the same level location for 3 years, some times at constant high heat, but this was an initial startup for the season and the stove (a tiny 35,000 btu unit) was only simmering on it's lowest (idle) temp for about 2 hours when we heard a giant pop and I saw the glass spider. It's a narrow bur DEEP stove and the burn-pot is actually set about 6 inches back from the door in this unit. The pot is a basket style that directs the flame straight up and nowhere near the door. Nothing was within 10 feet of the stove, and heat was obviously not the issue as I could even touch the cracked glass (stove still burning) with my hand. Any ideas, sir?
Odd. If it worked for 3 years and then a crack developed I would say that maybe the high-temperature Fiberglass Gasket Failed and the glass was hitting metal on the inside. Or if the heat at one point exceeded 1500 deg then that could be the cause. I am assuming the glass was never replaced. You know there is a thing insurance Companies use which is damaged due to "An act of God". Call me at 845-496-2500 as I would love to speak to you on this.
Great video. But you mentioned that you wanna use tempered where there is lot of moving like opening and closing? Does this mean the ceramic glass would be very susceptible to cracking from regular vibrations? I am currently debating whether i should put a glass on my wood stove door or just pound the hell out of the steel plate that was put there to cover the hole so that its flat and seals well. I really loved how you did exactly what concerned me bout the glass with the torch then the liquid. Ive has cast stoves crack on me when trying to get it lit from a dead cold on temps around -20°c to -30°c. Man it really made me mad. Gonna stick with steel stoves. Thx for the great explanation man.
Is there any adhesive that can be used to glue that glass to an old wood stove to make a site glass for the flame? I know RTV/Silicone maxes out at 600f
You could use a high-heat sealant similar to Concrete. In Home Depot it is called Woodstove Sealant. I have a sand-type sealant. I do tell people to buy that if say a crack developed the glass, and to use it temporarily so the air does not affect the burn or incoming smoke before they get the new glass.
You would first have to find out if the manufacture installed double pane tempered glass. Some manufactures will use a low grade ceramic pyrex on the inside and tempered on the outside which is painted dot matrix. So my answer is NO. The cermaic they use is of low grade and only handles up to 700 Deg. You need my product which handles up to 1400 deg. The atmosperic temperature in a wood stove goes up to about 1000 deg.
what about putting glass from an old cooker into a log stove door?. will that work?. if so how to cut the cooker glaas to fit the stove door, an angle grinder?. any advice -thanks,-dave in uk
I'm not exactly sure what you're considering a cooker. If the glass is tempered. Then the answer is no. But then you won't know until you try to cut it. I mean it's reasonable but I wouldn't suggest it but give it a try. You cannot use tempered for a log stove door

For what it's worth, if you try cutting tempered glass it will shatter into those little bits. If the oven door survives cutting, it's not tempered and won't be a problem in a burner. I've tried cutting tempered glass with a score-wheel and with a diamond blade disk in an angle grinder, in both cases it shattered into the small bits (it's not really an explosion but more of a sharp crack as is disintegrates - nothing flies anywhere, it just falls into a pile of little chips like you see with a broken car windscreen).

You would still need wood stove glass. However, what you can do to test this is to put a high-temperature thermometer to see if it goes over 550 degrees. The Tempered can be used.

That is correct. now enough heat and did not touch the weak part of the glass which is the edge.

Can stove top glass be cut ? I have an electric inferred grill that the glass is broken.
