I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2017 at age 60- Fortunately my doctor gave me a blood glucose meter instead of going straight to medication.
The dietary advice I found then was tro eat a surprisingly high amount of carbs - 25% os the plate should have been starch and 50% non starchy veg. Even with what little I knew then that seemed illogical but I tried it and watched my blood sugars spike. I also did a lot of reading and found stories of dietary corrections. I went low carb, limited to about 800 to 1000 calories per day for the next 3 months and my blood sugars normalised within those 3 months and have pretty much stayed there since as I still eat a low carb diet- I also lost at least 25kgs in those 3 months. It's good to see that awareness of diet as treatment is getting more widespread

one way to know if you are at risk of diabetes is to test insulin resistance, don't wait for pre diabetes and then diabetes. insulin resistance occurs years before.... then change your diet and observe if things are creeping. Don't wait till you have 'pre-diabetes' it puts you at higher risk of heart disease...you don't need to be a vegan to prevent diabetes. I ditch the grains - and eat mostly veggies. It's generally related to over-calories so eating to your energy requirements is very important. grains are very calorie dense as are nuts. I can't consume either without blowing my calories hence I ditch them... long walks, resistance training and fruit and veg with the meat and fish and fowl and eggs and fermented cheese. I have no medial issues and no insulin resistance and no fatty liver and fabulous kidney function now. high protein. you have to do some strength training, on top of walking.

A healthy weight will trump any nutrition and exercise program unless that nutrition and exercise program reduces the overall body composition to the point of avoiding any visceral fat.

It is insane to think you have a medical professional advocating “shredded wheat with grapes” as good example of a diet which helps prevent type 2 diabetes.

    • @edwardlulofs444

I didn’t hear “shredded wheat” because of the accent. But I no eat white flour and grapes are high glycemic. But 2 or 3 grapes would be acceptable with other high fiber foods in the same meal.
But other than that technical difference, I can agree with what he says.
I have a family history of Type 2 so I no longer eat anything with any amount of added sugar or fruit juice.
I watch a type 1 diabetic and he knows the GI of everything. I learned a lot from him.

According to the National Institute of Health, plain shredded wheat is made from whole grain and is minimally processed.

And according to the label on the box it has an 8:1 ratio of carbs to fibre, so pretty high net carbs, combined with milk and grapes

Like he has a fundamental lack of understanding of nutrition. Slightly horrified he talks about ‘delaying’ rather than avoiding diabetes too. Bonkers.

If you think that a bit of shredded wheat with a couple grapes is what’s causing problems with regards to diabetes, yikes.

Haha so chapter 2 from 54 seconds in, is named the Ancel Keys Hypothesis, which he is advocating- erm yeah I don’t I think I’ll be listening to any more thanks, and also the use of mitformin and ozempic as tools that can be utilised- I’m sure the pharma companies love you doc. Nice to see this channels output on this is about as up to date as its advice on the ‘dangers of cholesterol’.😅

Would you be able to do a podcast of the benefits of carbohydrates please.
A lot of your podcasts seem to demonise carbohydrates due to the spike in insulin afterwards. From personal experience, I followed this advice but found that testosterone and recovery significantly dropped only to improve when upping my level of carbohydrates again.
RED-S is becoming an increasing problem in sports and reducing carbohydrate intake is a big factor. If you could shed some balance to your carbohydrate debate I think it would benefit a lot of people.

I wish you guys would stipulate which type of diabetes you're talking about (spoiler: It's type 2) because a lot of this isn't applicable or is untrue for type 1, LADA et al and the primary risk factors for some of those are family history, where you live and your mothers pregnancy, et al, metformin can be dangerous and you will not reverse the symptoms.

I've been type 1 for 25 years and I'm now a competitive powerlifter. I don't think there's any different answer for someone who's diabetic vs isn't- just pick something you really like and start within your capabilities. Severe arthritis AND diabetes means you'll massively benefit from increasing muscle and strength over time (more blood glucose buffer from glycogen, increase bone health et al) but also means you probably want to start with very low impact stuff like walking, cycling, light free weights etc.

Exercising in water, in a pool minimizes shock to joints.
Edit: there's people who lift minor weights underwater, not sure how feasible this is but I assume band resistance exercises might work better under water but banded or pulley exercises would be better than free weights out of water in the first place.
I imagine machines would also be better than free weights on joints, as long as your dimensions fit.
You could just take up swimming for your water work, and go to the gym the other days of the week, just stick to machines, pulleys, and bands.
3 days resistance, with 2 to 3 cardio was my sweet spot. Your millage may vary.
