....The logic of the parents who saw the massive line and thought "This is a good idea to stand in this line that goes around the building with my baby!"
What you didn’t mention is that they actually did this promotion in the UK a few months ago with the EXACT same consequences. They knew exactly what was going to happen but decided to do it in America too with a larger population 😂 I think it’s just a ploy to get everyone to remember that they exist seen as though they aren’t as popular as they were a few years ago.
I have about 8 bears and they range from $20 to $60. But I really splurged on that $60 bear. I wanted ALL the accessories. The bear itself was 25. Accessories really make or break the wallet.
Did people think there'd be an infinite amount of stock and no lines or something? Those parents are acting like they're lining up for bread for starving babies. It's a cheap stuffed toy deal, you don't need it and if you decide to stand around all day that's on you.
ZombieWeiss build a bear told people their would be enough. Was going to take my daughter but talked to build a bear said “i can’t go till 430 pm Will there be enough” and was told “yes we have enough stock” over and over . Once I saw people posting about the line I didn’t go but still lmao
I agree, but there are some parents who cannot afford that once other expenses are put in. Of course, I’m pretty sure most of those parents were just cheap af.
As someone who works in retail, the people getting ticked off at the employees just makes me frustrated. It’s just shifting the blame, either from the build a bear company itself, or the parents who’ve ridiculously decided to wait in a line for that long
Same I used to work at Walmart , the customer thinks they know more then you and go "well you have to have " or "you do this" They act as if you made the product or promo and you should take the blame Don't blame us that a huge company can't seem to organize what should of been a easy grab and go
I work in retail as well. Sure, the employees aren't deserving of these people screaming at them, but it's kinda expected if they were waiting hours in the heat. Being uncomfortable, tired, sweaty, in pain, etc. can make people snappy. That being said, I don't think these people deserve pity for stupidly waiting that long for a stuffed animal. I'm just saying that it's gonna happen regardless given the circumstances.
Exactly. In their position, I wouldn't have even gotten in line. I'd have turned around and left right away. Like. "Sorry kids, Mommy loves you but she isn't going to make you wait in this line. Let's go to another toy store."
DrawciaGleam02 Tanacon was a convention from a TH-camr, a lot of people went, but there wasn’t a lot of room in the building for 5,000 people... Supposedly... there were 23,000 people in all that went. Since there wasn’t room, people sat outside for HOURS. Getting sunburns, and not getting any water or food. Overall people got scammed, and such.
@@hyun7240 I just read an article about it. Apparently the convention was made to get back at another convention going on at the same time. But the whole thing was really mismanaged it seems.....
I liked the grown adults yelling at the store employees, as if it was the employees' fault that so many people were there. And I saw some of those families had like 5 children with them. You think MAYBE the families who brought every kid with them, who probably didn't already have a bear picked out, contributed to the lengthy wait time? Either way, the poor store employees aren't to blame for a thousand people showing up for this poorly thought-out promotion, stop yelling at them. And like Chad said... you could just leave. Why would wait in line for 6 hours for a bear, whether you had a little kid with you or not? Like, you could go work minimum wage somewhere and earn all the money you'd need to pay for a full price bear in that timeframe. Also the bears/stuff that isn't bears aren't even that great quality anymore, definitely not worth it.
Banjo Peppers It's like "Tanacon Jr." but worse since Build-A-Bear is more professional and the supposed "victims" are old enough to know better than to put their children through this mess.
I’m suddenly having PTSD flashbacks to being an Elf for a Santa for the parks department. How is it that children understand disappointment better than adults?
Kids are used to not having full control and being denied. Adults aren't, at least not as customers. There's a lot customers can get away with with businesses following "the customer is always right" 95% of the time.
I saw the line and took off. Fortunately, I had joined the mailing list ahead of time and received a coupon for a better deal. $1 bunny for a 14 yo and $4 for a 9 yo. This guy’s an idiot.
You know, if your child is like, three or under (maybe even four), you could take them down to any dollar store, or plush toy store, and get them a stuffed animal there (even buy an outfit meant for a baby doll, etc). Your child will be just as happy and won't know the difference, and likely won't even remember the experience at that age anyway. Heck, I was happy with Goodwill toys when I was little. Buy a plush, dress it up, boom!
This is not the first or last time when grown adult people lost their minds over toys. I am a veteran of the retail wars and survived the year of Tickle Me Elmo. We had a fist fight in the parking lot. Glad to have survived.
I used to have one of those. We had to get rid of it becuase it would talk randomly in the middle of the night. This happened to most toys you could interact with I had as a child.
I made a build-a-bear when I was about 9, it had a frilly white ballerina costume but the best part about it was when you squeezed its paw a man in a deep voice sang happy birthday.
I used to love going there when I was younger, my parents even had a birthday party there for me and my brother (our birthdays are a day apart). When I went years later to get my boyfriend the Jigglypuff since it’s his favorite Pokémon, I was really surprised about how much the technology changed. Like when I got a voice box for mine, I remember having to go inside a closet to not have it have any background noise, but now there’s noice cancellation technology in it!
I HAVE THAT SAME VOICE IN MINE except I got it when i was 4 (I'm 14 now) and it's voice jus sounds like a demonic beast singing Happy birthday to me nowadays and it's *scary*
The bears themselves are almost worthless only about 2 dollars. All the profits come from clothing and accessories. My wife worked a summer at build a bear.
Really shows how low us humans will go just to save a few bucks "People have been waiting for 7 hours!" That's no one else's fault but your own if your time is worth saving 10-20 dollars that's on you. Just look at gas stations with a line of 30+ cars just because the gas is 3 cents cheaper.
To be honest there no SCAM here, they should have just stamped a big "1000 units per store" or something like that, not that would've stopped entitled people that arrived 3 hours after the store opened to complain about not getting a bear but still.
@@laurasullivan77 For kids they actually weren't asking for any confirmation (like you didn't need a birth certificate or anything). I don't know if any people tried to lie about their kids age, and I'm not sure if the store had procedures for that sitatution.
The line in my mall was crazy and there were kids who were asking their parents to leave cause they didnt even want one that bad. The parents are insane tho and still made the kids wait like 3 hrs or more.

I just feel sorry for the minimum wage employees who are forced to deal with all these wailing miserable children and their psychotic mothers who all expect your going to move heaven and earth just so they can get "their" little brat a 4$ bear. like good god I could never work at a place like that.
It killed the spirits if their workers. My gf works at one and i know ppl from 5 different locations; they expected big crowds but not like that. They LOVED working there and now theyre crushed and dread going back because even in december theyre still dealing with the consequences
Sad that the adults threw tantrums while their children are calm and patience. Also if I was interviewed about the event. I would have some fun by making bear puns. "The situation is unBEARable" "
You wouldn't have been interviewed. That's not how mainstream news works. They only take the most horrible which in this case the best overly dramatic will do for their needs.
Good Lord... I can only imagine the sheer terror experienced by the staff at Mall of America. They have two full size Build-a-Bear workshops and a seperate Build-a-Bear cafe across from one. I can't believe people would actually subject themselves and their kids to this big of a nightmare situation for a freaking bear 😂
Yup they will. The only reason I didn't lose interest in mine is cause you could 'bring them to life' online in the build a bear mmo. They closed the mmo down a while ago, so the only reason to get a bear is if they've licensed a character you like.
My kids wanted to go, however living in rural Maine that meant an hour and a half drive to the closest BAB. I said no and that was the end of that. I'm so happy I was too lazy to drive because it was an utter crapfest. We went that day to our local Goodwill and snagged 3 BAB animals (two bunnies and a leopard) for under $10.
It took me a bit too long to realize that wasn't him excited for Charmander but an actual recording of the Charmander toy. Even Ash would've been like, "Good Call, Damien" on a Charmander that sounded like that.
Having worked at a local television station for several years, I can give you a theory as to why this was covered by stations. Increasingly, segments being put into local news broadcasts are being driven by what’s doing well on social media, particularly a station’s Facebook page or what the station’s ownership has found to be a “talker” online. This is a classic example of something that was a hot topic and was likely written up by dozens and dozens of TV station web departments to post on their websites and social platforms and it probably got a lot of shares on Facebook and Twitter and clicks on their website. Since it probably did get high levels of engagement, the tv producer of that newscast likely has to include an item or two that is “doing well” on social media (aka: What’s Trending or other synonyms for the segment) for the station and place it in their show. From the clips you showed, it felt very much like a quick 20-30 second segment to fill a slot in their 22-minute newscast. For example: our TV station, for some reason, did an article on the NES Classic, purely because it was a hot topic the day it was announced and the story “did well” on social media that day and got lots of engagement so that story also ended up in the newscast. So, to your point, in my opinion and experience, it’s highly unlikely Build-A-Bear paid tv stations for exposure. The promotion itself was the exposure, so the company just had to wait for it to get hot on social media and online, and eventually, local tv stations seeking clicks on their websites/social pages will pick it up share it on their platforms, and then it’ll end up in a broadcast as a “trending” item. Is this news? Eh, having worked in tv... the definition of what is “news” in regards to a tv newscast is becoming grey because of the internet. Stories that seem to interest people online (clicks, shares) are now having to be shoehorned into newscasts, even if something that could be newsworthy is booted, all because a station can use the story as a promotion for their own website (e.g: a story like this would’ve been written at my station to end with, “and keep up with the latest trending news by liking our Facebook page at WXYZ TV ... our Facebook fans heard about this story first so be sure to stay in the know!”) Just wanted to share that insight from years in this field... love your stuff, Chad!
The parents should be blamed for this tbh. If the wait in line was more than an hour that should be a clear sign that it wasn't worth it and just go into another damn store. These parents are just so stubborn and don't know when to stop. Just go to another store for Pete's sake waiting in line for 7+ hours isn't worth a god damn teddy bear
Theory. This was just a publicity stunt to give people a $15 off coupon knowing that they'll come by in and use it on a full priced bear so Build A Bear makes a lotta $$$. Someone mentioned they also did it in the UK so I'm going to use than as evidence to support my claim. Smooth move build a bear!
@@Lannystan That to but still, there's some people who don't care and rich people especially love bragging they have 8 kids all named with the letter K.
I don’t blame build a bear for lowering their prices, they’re a business and they can do whatever they want with their prices. But these idiot parents waiting for 6 hours (hours that could be spent with your family or going to work to make more money to support your family) so they can save like 30-34 dollars on a teddy bear, really?!
If I pulled up to the mall and saw that line, I would immediately turn around. Yeah, my kid would probably be upset and throw a tantrum, but it would last like 15 minutes tops, as opposed to standing in line all day listening to them whine the entire time.
So I live on the west coast, and worked in a store RIGHT ACROSS FROM A BUILD-A-BEAR. OMG. These people were crazy. Even though the promotion was cancelled on the website, the local stores continued on with it (because the line started forming 5hrs before they even opened.) It got to the point where we (an unrelated store) were bringing the b.a.b employees juice and fruit to keep their blood sugar up. Because they never got a moment of rest.
Imagine being yelled at by entitled piss nuts and then some employees from a store brings you a drink you didn't have to pay for. I would be grateful if it was water
Yeah, I remember the horror that was Pay Your Age Day. The website said that the promotion was only for the birthday club bonus members, and i'm pretty sure more than 80% of those people in line were not in the birthday club. I didn't go. (Because I knew what was going to happen) but I did go to the mall about a week later and I just went in there to see the aftermath. Lol, my local build a bear had NOTHING, there were almost no stuffed animal skins, and everything was dirty and the shelves on the wall were knocked down. Luckily they recovered, but oh my god, if I were a parent and I had a two year old I would not be standing in line for 8 hours. I felt sorry for the rest of the mall that day.
Yeah you're right, its been a thing for the past several years if not maybe even closer to a decade. Its terrible. People are having to skip Thanksgiving dinner to work retail. And I thought getting to work at 4:30am for a 5:00am open was bad, back when I worked at Toys R Us (12 years ago).
All these people were complaining and saying it's the employees fault have to realize that they decided to step into the huge lines and wait with their kids.
Not to mention, the employees themselves could get in trouble if they leave their posts! Yes it would’ve been nice if they also gave water to people outside, but they can’t just leave the store like that.
This reminds me of the time Rick fought Obama to get a selfie for Morty when Morty could take it or leave it. Also, imagine making your kids wait a line that long.
I used to work at my local mall at a coffee shop and I had a friend who worked in the Build-a-Bear. The day this event happened I was sent from my kiosk to another store in the mall to exchange some coins and i passed by the BaB and yeah, the line was insane, but there were angry parents, kids crying, and I looked through the window and saw my friend sighing with her head in her hands as the manager was trying to help customers. My friend and the manager quit after that.
This is What Should Have happened. 1. They should Have done if for like a week or something. Give more people chances to get to build a bear. 2. Do it as an Online coupon, that the must present. 3. Do it as a.sweepstakes so you get more revenue traction. Everyone has, a chance to win pay Your age but only a few do. The word is spread around give consolation prizes like 5 dollars off. Win Win.

The bears themselves are cheap but the accesorries are not
Some of the bears can be pricey even without the clothes and extra stuff.
So you can just like get a naked bear then BOOM
I have about 8 bears and they range from $20 to $60. But I really splurged on that $60 bear. I wanted ALL the accessories. The bear itself was 25. Accessories really make or break the wallet.

As someone who works in retail, the people getting ticked off at the employees just makes me frustrated. It’s just shifting the blame, either from the build a bear company itself, or the parents who’ve ridiculously decided to wait in a line for that long
Same I used to work at Walmart , the customer thinks they know more then you and go "well you have to have " or "you do this"
They act as if you made the product or promo and you should take the blame
Don't blame us that a huge company can't seem to organize what should of been a easy grab and go
I work in retail as well.
@@Saturnthroughstars weren't the customers waiting AFTER it was canceled? i'm still mad at the higher ups for being irresponsible tho.

What is Tanacon????
DrawciaGleam02 Tanacon was a convention from a TH-camr, a lot of people went, but there wasn’t a lot of room in the building for 5,000 people...

Stories that seem to interest people online (clicks, shares) are now having to be shoehorned into newscasts, even if something that could be newsworthy is booted, all because a station can use the story as a promotion for their own website (e.g: a story like this would’ve been written at my station to end with, “and keep up with the latest trending news by liking our Facebook page at WXYZ TV ... our Facebook fans heard about this story first so be sure to stay in the know!”)
Just wanted to share that insight from years in this field... love your stuff, Chad!

hello there
I used to work at my local mall at a coffee shop and I had a friend who worked in the Build-a-Bear.
The mothers who queued 3 hours for a bear could've worked an extra 3 hours and bought the bear...
@Lil Broomstick Either way, it really isn't worth it to stand in line that long for anything.
@Lil Broomstick and thats where i show you a magical thing called overtime
It's still bullshit though. You're still paying more for having an older child.
Win Win.

That is actually the current official voice for Charmander after 4kids stopped dubbing and the Pokémon company took over
You mean 4kids did a decent dubbing job for once? Goddamn.
Legit thought that was just Chad doing a voice over

It was not a scam on their end it was the parents fault for standing in line for too long
it's also hardly a scam when the parents still choose to wait in line for hours AFTER hearing it was canceled.
Yeah the parents are the idiots

@@Mi_Fa_Volare apparently they did it in the UK and the same thing happened. It's entitled parents not just americans
