I feel like Matt might have preempted the whole crisis by jailing Ben for horse thieving and Creed for stealing Ben's wages and holding both till the matter was resolved either by (1) both men agreeing on a payment of wages by cash or by substituting the horse or (2) if they couldn't agree then delivering both of them for trial.
