    Portable is my favoured operation and it's fantastic to see you out and enjoying yourself. I have the 817 & 857 for field operations matched with a 14aHr lifepo4 battery. My antenna selection is mainly dipoles cut and tuned for particular bands, that removes my need for a tuner. My usual antenna is a home-brew fan dipole tuned for 40, 20 & 10mtrs. Thank you for sharing 👍

    Great QSO! NJ2US is a great operator! Jeff serves as net control for the East Coast Amateur Radio Service (ECARS 7.255). You really lucked out being on at the same time... he’s super patient and has a lot of fun on the air.
    I’m a 817ND operator myself, and love the radio. I’ll have to try a windom antenna.
    Great video.

    My first QSO on my FT818ND was from North Florida to North Georgia, over 300 miles. The next was to Columbia, SC. All on 2.5 watts, and a home-brew 40-meter dipole strung haphazardly in about ten minutes up in the trees at a height of about 12 feet. The cool thing about QRP is that it takes 4 times the power to come up one S unit. That means if 100 watts comes in as a 9, 25 watts will come in as an 8, and 6 watts will come in at a 7. The big thing is the antenna. My understanding is a good resonant antenna properly strung at a decent height (mine was not) is the most important thing. Thanks for the video. 73. K9RFT

    Nice set up, great Video. QRP/portable is so much fun. I looked hard at the FT-818. I love Yeasu gear, but $ was out of my reach. I'm using a Xiegu X-108G QRP Outdoor Version with resonant Dipole(s) and having a blast. TNX 73

    You and a couple other Hams are really getting me stoked to go QRP and since I won't have a shack for a while longer (maybe 2020) this just might be the way to go this summer.
    Maybe you'll get a shout out of Maine.
    Subbed!

      MrQuick thanks for the reply. I like the 818. Some misunderstood the purpose of the 818. It was not really an upgrade to the 817. The 817 was so popular that they produced another run and made some minor changes.

    Did you get the ssb filter for it? That thing costs about 1/4 the price of the rig. Thinking of buying one up here near Pilot Mountain. Thanks for the video.

    • @KOVintageTech
      @KOVintageTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dick Wooten No I did not. I thought about it, but after watching a couple of TH-cam videos I don’t think it proves to be useful to me. I don’t do CW and I’m sure t really helps isolate adjacent Cw but the SSB Phone functionality is not very impressive.

    I am sorry that you bought the Yaesu Ft-818. The reason is that you will become addicted to using it. Right when the 818 came out I bought the 817. I have been working with it nearly exclusively. I bought the MFJ 1820T and have gotten contacts from Texas to PA on 500 mW. I just finished the video. I wrote the above during the video and close to the end I saw the MFJ 1820T or a variant. Good luck and enjoy!!

    • @KOVintageTech
      @KOVintageTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your encouragement and feedback. I have the 1820t and was playing with it last night. I connected it to my analyzer and could not get a decent swr until I added a counterpoise. Do you use one on your setup? Mine finally was at 1.3:1 using about 13 feet of wire.

    How long does the battery last per charge?

    • @KOVintageTech
      @KOVintageTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TexasPrepper86 good question. My first battery was bad. And it took Yaesu 7 months to replace it. Since I got it back I have not had a chance to test it alone. I run the rig with a 12 volt gel battery when I use this set up.

    "R" is "Romeo" according to the phonetic code. But you said "Radio". Is it American common usage?
    I had recognized it's universal because the phonetic code was established by NATO.

    • @KOVintageTech
      @KOVintageTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On HF DX you will often hear alternate phonetics. I rarely do this anymore, but it is common on DX. Like Nancy instead of November. And Ontario for Oscar. It’s just a way to help get your call understood in noisy pileups.

    • @forgetyourlife

      if the external battery puts out 12V it will do 5 watts. the internal will not.
