Nathan Johnson from Charlottesville, Va. -- Hey thanks for this series. I think that this is one of the most serious impediments to MOST hunters. Most of us DON'T own land and so therefor are guaranteed less success. So thankyou for these ideas.
Im currently building an acre plot for bow. One thing I have learned is that the burn off should be tilled in and limed. Also. Spread manure on the plot. My seed will be Austrian Winter peas as the general field cover, rutabagas and turnips ( brassicas) in the core. Outer edge will be oats and corn. Poor man I suggest Rye or oats and Winter peas. Should run you about 100 bucks ( and thats organic seed)
I keep hearing from experts not to plant clover in spring because it does not put down roots well and risks dying out in the summer. can you comment more on this? I want to plant some in spring, but concerned about these opinions I'm hearing. Thanks so much!
Stand named old faithful. He had great success there.... now let make it better. Why fix something that isn't broken? My biggest deer have all came from areas I left alone and stayed out of except for 3 or 4 times a year. A food plot or creating a food source isn't always the answer for quality deer. Quantity maybe. I just don't see fixing something that isn't broken. But then again you have to sell your products.
I use a feeder with corn on my plot. I have great deer and pics on my trail cam, but not much luck during hunting hours. Should I replace my feeder with a poor man's plot and will it increase my luck seeing deer during hunting hours?
Do burn and replant these every year or is the more of a perennial food plot. Also, I'm in North Texas do you think this type of plot would be suitable to go from April through deer season (end of December)?
+Daniel Pifer Any size will work, even something as simple as a 30x30 foot opening that gets some sunlight. Erik's plot was right about 1/8 of an acre in size, about 40 yards long by 10 yards wide. Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Spread a quality compost on your poor soil areas, and continue applying, anything you plant will grow.

Food plot then slap a gravity feeder with high protein pellets on it

Keep it up man
what is the minimum size of a clover poor man plot that you would suggest? How big was Eric's plot?

After you spray do you have to burn it? I don't really feel comfortable burning after I spray it.
Use a weedwacker and take it all down then rake it out
