    Lyrics
    A good impression of myself
    Not much to conceal
    I'm saying nothing
    But I'm saying nothing revealed
    I simply am not here
No way I should appear happy
    Stop whining please
    Because of who we are
    We react in mock surprise
The curse off, there must be more
    So don't breathe here
    Don't leave your bags
    I simply am not here
No way I should appear happy
    Stop whining please
    The dust in my soul
Makes me feel awake in my legs
    My head in the clouds
    And I'm zoning out
    I'm watching TV
But I find it hard to stay conscious
    I'm totally bored
    But I can't switch off
Only apathy from the pills in me
Its all in me, all in you
Electricity from the pills in me
Its all in me, all in you
    Only MTV, and COD philosophy
    We're lost in the mall
Shuffling through the stores like zombies
    What is the point
    What can money buy
    My hand's on a gun
And I find the range, God, tempt me
    What did you say
    Think I'm passing out
Only apathy from the pills in me
Its all in me, all in you
Electricity from the pills in me
Its all in me, all in you
    Only MTV, and COD philosophy
All the apathy from the pills in me
Its all in me, all in you
Electricity from the pills in me
Its all in me, all in you
Water so warm that day. water so warm that day.
I counted out the waves. I counted out the waves.
    As they broke into
The water so warm that day
I was counting out the waves
And I followed their short life
As they broke on the shoreline
    I could see you
    But I couldn't hear you
You were holding your hat in the breeze
Turning away from me in this moment
You were stolen as black across the sun
Water so warm that day. water so warm that day.
I counted out the waves. I counted out the waves.
As they broke into shore. as they broke into shore.

That's what Prog genres do the best of :D
THey have plenty of songs that have been on the radio and are radio friendly but I will admit its difficult to promote their act to the general public- we're just too adhd in general more or less. Everyone i ever play PT for tho loves it. My dad is 74 and I gave him Deadwing one year for his birthday and he still plays it in HIS car - and his thing can only have 6 discs to chooser from at once so yeah.

The entire band is amazing and Steven Wilson has to be one of the best prog musicians of all time. But...gavin harrison on drums...the dude is so smooth. Anything he plays is so good.
And this being PT, most people there become so into the music they look like zombie. I got this way at Rush concerts. It’s more about hearing everything going on and becoming immersed in the music. A far cry from other rock or metal band concerts. Lol.

Yes. I’m not a huge fan of pineapple thief. There newer stuff with Gavin is better but not sure what doesn’t quite grab me. I think it’s the singers voice. @@mpkelley20 Of course they'll never be as good as Porcupine Tree and I agree with you about the music, but it's fun to hear Gavin play something similar and just imagine. It really seems like Gavin is still hooked on Porcupine Tree. Even his solo stuff has reimagined covers of their songs.

@@mpkelley20 I feel the same way about Pineapple Thief. I like them but nowhere near how I like Porcupine Tree and Rush. For me it is because the sings never really get going hard. They always seem to be holding back or have just that airy quality to them. I do not know all of Pineapple Thief's songs but the one's I have heard do not have that edge that Rush had or Porcupine Tree had.
I also really get into the music with Rush and Porcupine Tree. it is more about the music and the way it gets into your soul. Both Rush and PT are such great musicians. They can play it all.

PT has such a cult following, it is one of the greatest prog bands there are. The intellectual lyrics and the flawless execution are what people admire when they go and see them live, that is why they are not partying. The drummer, Gavin Harrison is one of the top drummers of all time, and Steven Wilson is a prolific music creator, he produced a couple of Opeth's albums and you can actually hear his vocals in a couple of songs.

I never liked "partying" at live shows. I'm there to see tha band play, not to jump around. That's quite normal with more progressive bands ;)

    • @soocool78
      @soocool78 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

it's also what I hate about progressive band fans. Not that they can't sit back and enjoy the show like that...but I have a distinct memory of being 16 and watching Liquid Tension Experiment. Which is a HIGH energy band (look at their song Acid Rain). My friends and I were jumping around (it was a GA type show, not assigned seats), and this guy with his arm crossed was threatening to punch me if i didn't stand still.
Bruh, get the fuck over yourself.
Not that you would act that way, but just irks me when other people take it so seriously they don't realize that the way people enjoy the moment (and enjoy the band) can differ.

Btw... Sadly this band broke up nearly 10 years ago. Steven Wilson who is the brain behind the band said that he wanted to do his own thing, since having 4 different members meant that everybody had a saying. John Wesley on backing vocals/guitar is more of a session musician. Otherwise the band consists of Richard Barbieri on synth, who was a member of "Japan" in the 80s i believe. On bass: Colin Edwin, and not at least Gavin Harrison on drums, who is one of the finest drummers around! A master of fills!
All of them had their preferences which gave life to the PT-sound. Wilson is kind of the brain and creative part of the band, and according to him he split the band since he wanted to do his own thing.
But besides making music under his own name he has some side-projects like Blackfield, no-man(??) and a project with Mikael from Opeth. He has also produced some of the Opeth albums, a polish prog band named Riverside and remastered the whole King crimson catalogue. Gavin Harrison have a few projects of his own, like Pineapple thief. And have also joined King Crimson on tour.

Never thought about it before, but this is a sort of inverse of Metallica's "Master of Puppets." Here, you start medicated, then it wears off in the middle and then the drugs come back and bring that detached melancholy of the ending.
The song (and much of the album) is a sort of "kids these days" album, specifically talking about things like the hands-off parenting-by-medication done so often. The whole album, _Fear of a Blank Planet_ , is great. I'd say it's probably my favorite PT album start-to-finish (though I like certain bits of other albums more).
They started out more as a "Steven Wilson likes dicking around making electronic psychadelica" kind of thing in the 80's, and only evolved into a more aggressive act like this in the early 2000's when Wilson hired some other dudes and discovered he liked prog metal. He worked with Opeth in 2001, and the next year, released a much harder-edged album called _In Absentia_ (The one right before this one) that marked Porcupine Tree's turn to a somewhat edgier sound.
Their earlier stuff is still a trip. _Lightbulb Sun_ and _Up the Downstair_ are both spectacular bits of psychadelica, and much more in the Pink Floyd direction that you noticed in their influences. Their later albums ( _In Absentia_ , _Fear of a Blank Planet_ , _Deadwing_ and _The Incident_ ) are all varied levels of aggressive and energetic in a way that the earlier stuff wasn't.
Wilson's solo work is pretty melancholy, and can be hella depressing (Seriously, _Hand. Cannot. Erase._ is a ROUGH listen, and _The Raven that Refused to Sing_ isn't much less of a downer), but his songwriting is so great. He recently released a great album with an almost 80's industrial-pop lead single reminiscent of Depeche Mode that was a sort of surprise given what he's done before, and it's alright as well. I've never heard a BAD album from Wilson. Blackfield, his Opeth collabs, so much great stuff. Steven Wilson is one of those guys worth following because he just produces (heh) such great music.

Welcome to the world of PT!! Funny you should mention Beach Boys, leader Steven Wilson was really into them. But, this song was an excellent starting point. And this DVD is like a "greatest hits" compilation, but also it is LIVE, which is the best way to hear this band. I recommend any song off this concert, or the "Arriving Somewhere but Not Here" DVD, live from Chicago, it's just as good, especially the title track.

That was a weird reaction, IMHO.
This is a song about depression and about drugs to suppress such depression and get 'Anesthetized'. Just listen to the lyrics! "Only apathy from the pills in me" One could even understand this from the tone of the music; dark at the beginning, and more and more dark during the song until complete depression at the heavy section and 'Anesthetized' once the melow sections starts; 'you don't feel anything anymore'. But the reaction is laughing and giggling at each other... But perhaps I'm too serious about this. Well, at least you had fun!

Love this group! The first "new" band I discovered back in 2012. More of a Pink Floyd sound imo. In fact I discovered them after looking for a group similar to Pink Floyd.

A modern epic prog classic. On the album version Alex Lifeson from Rush plays the guitar solo. PT were always superb live. Gavin Harrison must be among the best drummers of all time. The keyboard player used to be in the 80's 'new romantic' band Japan, along with legendary bass player Mick Karn.

Gavin is definitely part of the best drummers la crême de la crême!
Then it is a question of taste but for me Gavin is not only a technician but is very musical and ultra precise like a metronome. But being musical is key to generate emotion and this is what music is all about.

    Ah-nest-ah-tize.
You're right the crowd did get Anesthetized!
The drummer, Gavin Harrison, is currently one of three drummers for King Crimson.
This song also has strong Rush influence. I would say it's more of a cross between Pink Floyd and Rush.

    • @mpkelley20
      @mpkelley20 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Depends on their album. Their styles are very different on each album they put out. Early stuff was experimental and was softer. Almost psychedelic. Their later stuff started getting a bit heavy but it really is all over the place. Once album called voyage 34 follows someone on a bad trip from acid. Hard to really pinpoint their style. Flash forward to today where PT is no longer and Steven Wilson does solo stuff and his albums were kind of branches off PT but his last album and his upcoming album could almost be classified as pop. But pop in a prog way. Hard to describe. Lol.

@@mpkelley20 I believe Steven Wilson in one interview have credited Pink Floyd as one great inspiration. If you look at some of his solo-stuff it has some PF-sound to it.

    • @mpkelley20
      @mpkelley20 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes. Floyd I was definitely an influence. You should check out his podcast he’s doing right now. He’s talking about various albums from each year that he feels stood out. Amazing listening to him talk about them. A lot have influenced his sound over the years. And it’s a wide range!

    • @monarch-black
      @monarch-black 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Their early albums are even more Pink Floyd, even PF crossed with The Doors. Way more psychodelic than this. Gavin Harrison is a beast on drums, but after he joined they had a heavier sound. I love their later sound, but I still love the earlier music too. I've had some great experiences to it.

    • @ryankieth1675
      @ryankieth1675 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The heavier sound developed due to Steven's working relationship/friendship with Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth. They collaborated on some songs outside of their respective bands as well.
