    The residents of what is unfortunately called “North Macedonia” are, in effect, a melting pot of Slavic peoples, Albanians, and Roma. From their majority Slavic origins, the overwhelming character is Bulgarian and the rest Serbian. Politically speaking, this republic has its genesis in a Bulgarian nationalist movement in the 1800s that split into two. The smaller camp went on to disassociate themselves with Big Brother Bulgaria and to found a pseudo identity of their own within the socialist melting pot of Yugoslavia. They adopted “Macedonian” because of the historical significance of the territory at the time and also because the lands of ancient Macedonia at the time (modern day Greece) were occupied by the failing Ottoman Empire. They, along with the Bulgarian big brother and the Greeks and the Serbs knew it would be a competition on who grabs what from a territory the Ottomans looked like they will be losing. The Greeks won that battle and liberated Macedonia and absorbed it within its territory in 1919. Slavic speaking peoples within Greece’s Macedonia at the time spoke Bulgarian and considered themselves to be of Bulgarian heritage. In the wake of post WWII political maneuverings, some of these minority village people started to call themselves “Macedonians” and children of Alexander the Great. This is a monumental joke.
    Luckily Greece and Bulgaria enjoy great relations and both agree that the residents of “North M” are actually an offshoot of Bulgarian nationalism and that their language is in fact a dialect of Bulgarian.

It would be ashame if they ended up like Greece , broke , homeless and keep begging the EU for more and more money . Then they think they can block other countries from joining . Just for reference, regarding the extent to which North Macedonia's place is within the EU: In just the past two years, these people have banned all Bulgarian cultural clubs. Bulgarian organizations have faced shootings, attacks with stones and axes, and one of the clubs was even set on fire. As a reward, the attacker, who is a well-known figure, was chosen to sing at a Christmas event. A 19-year-old boy of Bulgarian origin was brutally beaten based on his ethnicity. Macedonian doctors refused to treat him, which forced the Bulgarian president to send the presidential plane to transport the boy to a Bulgarian hospital. A representative of North Macedonia in the last Eurovision contest received 400 death threats simply because he had the courage-or perhaps the foolishness-to admit in a TH-cam interview that he had Bulgarian roots. The man had to leave the country, while the politicians of that country organized a commission to remove him as North Macedonia's representative, solely because he is Bulgarian. They went as far as removing gravestones from a churchyard because the revolutionaries buried there over a century ago had Bulgarian names. They placed new gravestones to cover the Bulgarian names. The hate speech against Bulgarians is inhumane, and the discrimination has been total for the last 80 years in that country. The entire history of Bulgarians is banned and censored.
      And yet, historically, Macedonians are Bulgarians. The paradox of all this hatred is that, despite it, hundreds of thousands of Macedonians acquire Bulgarian citizenship by proving their Bulgarian descent-around 160,000 people. Most politicians in this country actually have Bulgarian citizenship. The farce is complete.
      The old structures from the time of communist Yugoslavia remain very strong and hinder this country from normalizing relations with brotherly Bulgaria and moving forward toward the EU. Bulgaria was the first to recognize them as an independent state. Bulgaria saved them from hunger during the Greek embargo. Bulgaria is the only country that armed them for free during the war in 2001. Bulgaria has directly lobbied for their EU entry, and during its first and historic presidency of the EU, it prioritized the issue of EU enlargement with Macedonia and the other Western Balkan countries. Yet today, Bulgaria is portrayed as an obstacle. The truth is different.
      Just imagine-it's been two years now, and this country still hasn't started EU accession negotiations because it refuses to include Bulgarians in its constitution. That constitution lists half a dozen ethnic groups, but there's no place for Bulgarians. I’m afraid there’s no place for such a country in the EU, at least not at this stage.

      @@latviabalkanumuzika1514 Because, my friend, the Bulgarian constitution, like most constitutions of developed democratic societies, is a civic constitution. The Bulgarian constitution does not even mention Bulgarians; it only refers to the citizens of Bulgaria with equal rights and obligations. In this way, the state of Bulgaria limits itself from interfering in its citizens' rights to define their ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation.
      In contrast, the Macedonian constitution is ethnic in nature. In that country, there are quotas for public sector jobs based on ethnicity. When Bulgarians are not included in the constitution, they do not have equal access to jobs and rights like other ethnic groups. For this reason, the EU requires North Macedonia to include Bulgarians, Croats, and Jews in its constitution. You may not know these basic facts, yet you persist in commenting on them.

      @@albshkupGreece doesn’t want any part of this country. Bulgaria can have the East and Albanian can satisfy itself with the west if it feels the need to do so and get away with it. The Serbs could rightly have held to patches in the north but given the demographics on the ground this seems highly unlikely; they’re struggling to hold onto Kosovo that was theirs for centuries.
      The Greeks would have preferred an independent and prosperous northern neighbour with political stability and enjoyed friendly relations.
      As this neighbour is untrustworthy and pursues irredentist aspirations and falsifies history, perhaps it should be allowed to its own fate.
      Athens should never had agreed to the name deal and should have kept the border closed.
      Unfortunately the Greeks were pressured by the US to allow Skopje NATO membership.
      EU membership is another thing all together and the US couldn’t care less one way or another.
      I don’t see them joining the EU any time soon.
      In fact, it is more likely that the EU disintegrates before they get to join it!

      @sa.377 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@mikele9878 I'm sorry but it's your country that has come out of a cereal box actually! Macedonia was an ancient Hellenic empire and later a Roman and Byzantine administrative region. From its earliest days, this Hellenic (Greek) nation used the Greek alphabet, spoke Greek, and followed the ancient Greek religion, later transitioning to Orthodox Christianity. Being an integral part of Hellenic culture, it's logical that Macedonia is now part of the Hellenic Republic-Greece. In contrast, the country you're referring to, which has unjustly adopted this name, has no connection to this history or cultural heritage. This situation represents a case of collective cultural appropriation and a form of brainwashing of people who are led to believe they are something they are not. Distorting and stealing another nation's history, instead of finding your true and unique identity as a people, is not acceptable-especially when it's done for geopolitical and economic motives, as is the case here.
