    At last I've made something useful with my wooden threads!
    The clamp turned out fantastic and I reckon it looks very cool!
    The editing is a little different to normal, there isn't any sped up footage. I just wanted to try something different - I hope you enjoy it!

    This comment doesn’t apply specifically to this video but keep in mind I’ve watched several of your videos in a row now...
    My friend you are extraordinarily talented, and you just come off as a genuinely kind human being. I truly enjoy watching you work.
    I avoid metal work like the plague because it stinks, it’s noisy, and sharp and I am very ill equipped to work with metal in my shop, however your videos have given me the desire to learn how to weld and cut metal so that my fabrication potential is unlimited.
    I hope you are proud of the products and videos you produce because you deserve to be. I can’t afford to support you on patreon yet but I have every intention of donating to your channel as soon as my new job is a bit more stable.
    You are appreciated my friend,
    Please keep up the great work!

    Many thanks for that explanation about having the threads in the same jaw! When I saw you spin the clamp in your hands and the jaws went in closer and in parallel, it made my head spin...
    I've never seen it done that way before, and I was thinking about buying some left hand threaded rod and nuts if I were to make some of these clamps myself.

    I've been planning to make some of these with some beech table legs I've had stood in the corner for years. The design is virtually the same as what we called tool makers clamps when I was a machinist. I've always thought they're better than the style you see people buyjng with left hand and right hand threads on the bar. Great method thanks.

    Very nice!! I'd have placed the collars on the opposite side of the jaw body. This way the collars get pulled into the jaw body and won't rely on the screws.

    • @PaskMakes
      @PaskMakes  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The end screw needs the collar on the inside of the jaw as that screw pushes into the inside of the jaw when under pressure. The other collar (for the middle screw) could've been put on the outside as you say but there wouldn't have been much room for the screws as the handle is quite large. The way I've done it still works though as there is no pressure put onto the centre collar as the underside of the handle pushes into the outside of the jaw and doesn't allow the collar to take any pressure (the groove has a fair amount of play. :)

    • @Krommandant
      @Krommandant 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both screws could have gotten two collars, on both the inside and outside of the clamp. Or thicker collars. All the pressure from the clamp is held onto by these flimsy pieces of wood, it's definitely a major stress point!

  • @Verfolnir
    @Verfolnir 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Beautiful work. One design oversight: The front collar, towards toe of the clamp -- should be on the outside of that clamp rail. That way, as you apply clamping pressure, the back screw presses the collar INTO the clamp rail, and the front screw pulls pressure INTO the clamp rail.
    As currently configured at time of this video.... the clamp can only apply such pressure as can be tolerated by two of the four screws holding the front collar in place. The moment any two of those screws give way, The front collar pulls loose - and no clamp. Hence, the collar arrangement should always press the collar into the clamp rails. QED. There is another arrangement by which you can apply the collars tangentially such that the clamp jaws can be racked.

    • @PaskMakes
      @PaskMakes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I can see why you'd think that but the front collar doesn't get any force put on to it as the shoulder of the screw handle prevents that happening! :)

    • @Verfolnir
      @Verfolnir 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah hah! I stand corrected. On second viewing I now see what you mean! Thank you for pointing that out. I wonder if there is a practical method to build a wooden thread support that would allow the threaded screws to rack? Of course, this is demonstrated with Jorgensen style clams as you can use a steel block for the threads. Could this be done, in some fashion with wood only?

    • @PaskMakes
      @PaskMakes  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries! I'm not sure how well it could be done with wood, if you made swivel blocks there may be too much friction plus they would end up making the jaws quite large! :)

    • @Verfolnir
      @Verfolnir 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting notes: theclampguy.info/au_a70.gif
      theclampguy.info/mkwc_gr.htm
      Cheers!

    • @Verfolnir
      @Verfolnir 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think (I imagine) from theclampguy.info photo below, the lower clamp rail could pivot on the shoulder of the front screw. The tip of the back screw need not actually be held in place, but could be allowed to find its own press-point; eventually marking out a radiused dado or trough. This would give the jaws /some/ flexibility of angle without binding the threads. Maybe?

    I think that the clamp design has a flaw here. The main pressure point is the hardwood collar on the unthreaded jaw inside with the four screws. I would expect higher clamping pressure if the collar was on the outside of the jaw rather than the inside but not sure how that would work with the two righthanded screws. Realize this is a two year old video and not much may come of the observation. Great video.
