I heard James say the impetus for The Unforgiven was to take the "soft verse and heavy chorus" dynamic that you hear in basically every song across all genres and flip it on its head. Virtually every song builds from the verse and the chorus gets bigger/louder/more energetic. This was to have a huge sounding verse and let the chorus be the quieter more subdued bit.
Love the slower Metallica stuff. Ya dont have to go 1000mph to be heavy. “Welcome Home” is another great one

Well i was sitting here just about to order my extra large mixed kebab with chilli sauce and NO salad thinking to myself where the fuck are those 3 with my request then low and behold the notification pops up and here we are.
It's a crime not doing the trilogy when you react to The Unforgiven.
I had that album as a kid. It was 15 years old by the time I listened to it but it really clicked with me. Great songs on there. Best Metallica album to me.
People hate change, but Metallica evolved and the black album was a new sound and rythme but the songs were still very personal and gave the band a new depth of music.
The way the drums sit back in this song and how the snare hit is just ever so slightly behind the beat just makes the whole thing for me. People can say what they like about Lars but this song was played with exceptional feel. And all recorded analog to tape back then, no moving things around a millisecond at a time like you can do today when recording music.
This was their 5th studio album, "Metallica" AKA " The Black Album".
Unforgiven Trilogy begins!!
Fantastic album. Remains special to me as it reminds me of my mom. The tour for this album was the last concert she took me to before she died.

The great thing about Metallica is, everyone loves the songs that they were introduced to no matter what stage they were in, and (though some hate to admit it) they atleast like the songs outside that stage. I can throw on And Justice for All..., sit back and let it play all the way through without even a second thought about which song on this album I like or want to skip. I can do that with a few other albums also. Even though I shunned the newest stage of Metallica for the longest time, I still found myself enjoying some of it. I might not sit down with the album on a full playthrough, but its good.
The Black Album (which this song is on) was realeased in 1991
