    I'm cracking up at "engineers told us our product was impossible to make," because it's supposed to SOUND like the capsules are a feat of engineering, but if multiple engineers told them that...it probably wasn't a compliment. Knowing how engineers tend to speak, they probably just meant the capsules were unnecessarily hard to manufacture.
    Eg. They got told their design was bad by multiple consultants and flipped it into a positive.

      This is my bet for what the "Engineers said it's impossible" was about. I'll bet they initially asked for a design that was waterproof, snaps together, no internal corners, and can be manufactured for less than $1. 10 Engineers were like "fool that's impossible". The 11th engineer was like "I can do it, but they'll cost $6 to manufacture". So instead of selling them for $5 a pop, they sell for $15 a pop.

  • @electrogeek77

    I asked my spouse - an engineer - if these would be "impossible" to create, as those "ten engineers" claimed. He said they were likely made with incredibly simple injection molding, and that the injection molding for most Gundam model kits was likely more complicated.
    Also, magnets are not an issue - we fly with magnets on things like e-reader cases all the time.

    I would guess they are called capsules because not only are capsules just "containers"but they are typically associated with being small, compact, and potentially air/water-tight. Capsules, rather than containers, tend to be used to contain important things in a protective casing, like time capsules or the capsule (or cabin) of a spaceship/rocket. As an engineer myself, I probably would have told them the design was impossible to make just to discourage them from going with it. Un-traditional shapes are usually more expensive to manufacture (mind you that also depends on how you plan on manufacturing them. Probably wouldn’t matter much here). Also, the hexagonal shape is definitely not intuitive. While it may be seen as boring, a square is a much more convenient shape to work with. You can fit more full squares into most spaces than you can hexagons, and also, you can still snap them together nicely.

      or maybe that's their target demographic, who knows. like, you can get basically the same thing from any store that sells storage containers, and a lot of them look nice. I can't imagine anyone buying these just for the utility.

    • @TheGuindo
      @TheGuindo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +77

      honestly the hexagon is an incredibly efficient shape for minimizing materials used while maximizing volume. A square would actually use more plastic compared to how much volume it can hold vs a hexagon, especially since the inside of the container is circular rather than matching the exterior shape. Squares would need more filler plastic to round out the interior corners than hexagons do. plus, hexagons can easily be packed tightly together in a wide variety of configurations, making it easier to find space for the entire set in your bag without splitting them up.
      tl;dr: the hexagon shape is actually very space-efficient and makes perfect sense on a practical level.

    • @bia6677
      @bia6677 2 ปีที่แล้ว +58

    One travel hack I’ve found works great for jewelry is that instead of putting your items in tiny bags, get a pill or medicine container (which has small square compartments) and put your items in there. I would actually like something like these since I struggle with organization and I find the design appealing, my concerns are the price point AND how they advertise themselves as a way to make your skincare more portable.
    From my understanding, a lot of plastics can react with certain ingredients, wich may compromise the product’s effectiveness. Also, a lot of skincare packaging is meant to minimize exposure to air, dirt, bacteria and spores; if you pour your moisturizer it in this kind of container it might become clumpy or moldy (there’s obviously gonna be a different outcome for every product, you need to think about what the manufacturer accounted for when they designed it).

    Yes! Because products that come in a tube/pumper may not the same shelf life out of that tube. That isn't always the case for something in a sealed bottle.

    Tbh this just feels like the new gimmicky “magic travel container”. In my opinion, any container for travel has the same pitfall: it’s never the right size for all of your stuff. One of them will inevitably leak.
    I do most of my infrequent travelling via airplane, and because of my eczema I use a (nonprescription) cream to keep down any itching or rash all over, every single day. Those tiny little pots would last me maybe one single day. I have preserved a face cream pot that’s literally 100ml, the max capacity for liquids, to use for my cream. As a result the rest of my toiletries are always an accommodation to that.
    I get that in theory these are nice for a certain percent of customers, but I feel as though they’re too niche to really find any use in the general market.

    Would be fantastic if you did a follow up after say 6 months or year of use while traveling. I would pay decent money for a system like this if I was going to get actual longevity out of them. My cheap travel containers sometimes pop open their lids when inside my toiletries bag, so could see these being a good solution for that. Really love the recycled ocean plastics. I wonder how much percentage is new plastics vs recycled?
    Also thinking they could make minis and maxis for shampoo that you would typically need a larger volume to last a trip. Maybe make them double size so they fit with the group of hexagons in a modular way 😄 Great review, thanks Amanda.

The magnetic hexagons are space-saving, smart, and actually fun to arrange. They have the heft that makes them feel like quality... but they are not so heavy they are a burden to travel with. When I think of all the ridiculously indulgent things I have spent $75 or more on in my life that were one-time use or short-lived at best (a pair of shoes for a particular event that I never wore again, a pair of sunglasses that were lost soon after, some random kitchen appliance I thought would make my life easier but ended up being too complicated)...I found a winning purchase with these. Despite not being able to spray or pump the contents, these are super practical and easy to organize. One less thing I need to think about when packing. These, to me, were an awesome investment that I actually enjoy using. Truly, I *do* feel like these fill a needed void and are unique in the market. @@gsesquire3441 There's no law against reusing medicine bottles. Or traveling with medicine bottles at all. Gels and powders may need to be under 3.5oz but that's it. If there's any suspicion they just test it onsite. It takes MAYBE ten minutes.

    I remember seeing these when they were first advertised on Instagram and thinking they looked cool. And then I looked at the price and noped right out. I currently have a little box set from Daiso that has specific bottles for each type of product (I.e., spray bottle for toner, squeeze bottle for serum, etc.) It came with 8 containers and labels for $5, and honestly seems like it works just as well as this would.

    I personally prefer the little sets of travel containers, various sizes, come with sticker labels and it's own bag. Especially since they often come with spray and pump tops so no need to dip your fingers into the product 😌 But I take my serums as is since they're all under 100mL.

    As someone who works in manufacturing heres the thing producing even a simple thing like that becomes incredibly expensive for smaller companies (because molds are made of metal) the price is probably inflated to cover mold costs because they dont have the mass sale numbers that other companies would its like screen printing if you sell 1 shirt the cost is like 300$ cus the cost of the screen is expensive but for 300 shirts its like 1$ per shirt (i don’t remember how much the cost of a mold was but I believe it costs more than 10,000) the engineer saying you cant do that probably due to the expensive and hard time finding someone to produce (not the complexity of the design)

    Ngl, I love Cadence capsules 😂 As someone who did a lot of air travel, I liked how compact and cohesive they were while also allowing me to take toiletries on the plane. Are they ridiculously expensive? Yes. But have they been worth the money for me? Yes. I get irritated when my things are not just so because I get confused and lose stuff. But that stopped happening when I got some Cadence capsules and used those instead of tubes and baggies
