  • NOTE: weapons are dangerous. Some types may be illegal to own or carry where you live around the world. These videos are primarily designed to provide a historical flavour of how things may have worked, or were taught / used. The onus is always on you to know the law and the repercussions as it applies to you. Train safely and responsibly.

Context is everything. If I have a machete in the car I'm a psycho. If I have a machete, a folding shovel, a tow chain, a bag of kitty litter, and a gallon of water I drive out of town and am prepared in case I go off the road [Extra points for anyone who can tell me what all of these are for]. If I have a piece of leather with lead weights at both ends or a soft tube flared at both ends and filled with shot I'm a bludger or mug-hunter to borrow the slang of the day. If I have a messenger bag with books or art supplies I have books or sketch pads to keep in place while I work.
The whole point of these tools and techniques is to go home at the end of the day, pet the dog, kiss your sweetheart, have a drink and go to bed. If you're in the morgue, the hospital, or jail you can't do that. Arranging your tools so that you don't fail the Police Attitude Test gets a lot easier with a little planning. A good friend had a horrible little push ... not quite dagger. It was a thin, curved piece of antler at one end with a five inch triangular cross-section spike on the other. We tested it. It went right through Threat Level III vests. He was also a machinist, so there was a micrometer, a travel dial, and a couple odds and ends in pouches or a tool bag. I remember him telling a cop "It's my work scribe, Officer" and being believed. It was one of Jim Dennehey's slip-tip daggers.
Front door takes things to a whole different level. If someone is trying to invade my (occupied) home the Law in the United States, Australia, and Canada - not sure about the UK - is pretty clear. There's lots of statute and case law stating that they have invaded your castle it is as serious as rape, armed robbery, arson against a building with people inside, kidnapping or murder. There is no duty to retreat in your own home IN THOSE COUNTRIES (consult a lawyer for your jurisdiction) much less to retreat and leave family members undefended. Illegal weapons are still illegal, but it immediately rises to the level or deadly force. A golok or the equivalent - 12" chef's knife or butcher's breaking knife - works well in close quarters and has the potential to cause fight-ending damage very quickly; if it can disassemble a cow it can disassemble a person. Defaulting to a less-than-lethal tool in a situation where my life is in danger is not an extra risk I am willing to take on. That's assuming he gets past 5+ stone of fiercely protective front-loaded dog which is not the way to bet unless he has a gun.

As you say context is everything, a roll of carpet, a shovel , a couple of bags of lye are all innocuous things. but if the police search your car and find them in your trunk, good luck convincing them you are a gardener who's hobby is soap making and you're redecorating. As a former Chicago resident I know what the kitty liter is for!. BTW I had a very nice marking scribe which looked like a solidly built pen but with a tungsten carbide tip, better than any over priced "tactical" pen and i carried it for many years through hundreds of airports in my tool pouch, no issue. And you are right best home defense weapon is man's best friend and as a bonus is happy to see you the you get home. I experimented with domestic cats in the home defense role and realized that in my younger days I was known as "the cat" not for my speed and agility but because like them I did nothing but sleep and eat, and was F@ck all use in a crisis🤣

I feel like anyone who sees these as “offensive weapons” are maybe the problem, and they should probably not be trusted with your property or your ability for self defence.
Like these things may be illegal for legal fiction, but they are not unlawful for human beings.
Legal and lawful are even spelt differently so you can differentiate.
I don’t think that a great deal of people these days are all that intelligent when it comes to how you are to carry yourself in society.
Also, “criminals” with bad intent are going to get hold of what ever...
And then you, mr....... , thinking legal and lawful mean the same thing... being all “Law” abiding... when you are actually just confused due to the indoctrination process and the bastardisation of language.
      What have you got?

Also don’t break the god damn law!
      Don’t kill or injure anyone.
Don’t break or steal anyone’s shit.

      That’s not okay is it?
Legally okay for police, even though it is unlawful.
The courts deal with the legal system so the police are going to get back up by the broken and bent system.
Something are legal and lawful or illegal and unlawful. And it all marries up and we have faith in the justice system...
Something are unlawful but legal or lawful but illegal.
It’s treacherous. Know your rights and lawful standing as a human being. If you do not know your lawful rights you effectively have none. And they will bully you. Shout at you. All that... it’s treacherous

It is unfortunate that people do not get the life experience or have the knowledge of what certain objects are capable of because they never grew up in the woods where you learn to respect things like blades. They never get a chance to slice their hand open and never learn the empathy or respect for what are just tools.
Like a frying pan can kill... offensive weapon? Depends on who is holding it.
To me it is more of a reflection of how they perceive it and what they would use it for, calling some objects but not others “offensive weapons”. Not sure I trust those people? Like I would rather have it in my hands than someone who would consider a tool an “offensive weapon”
Also, as Tommy said in another video I think... like don’t flash or brag.
      It’s not big.
      It’s not clever.
      It’s not cool.
However it could very well save your life.
It’s your A game when shit gets waaay out of hand and you find yourself balls deep in a bad bad place.
If people think you have a weapon... and they want to rob you. They are going to bring a tool of their own to the party.
Not what you want or need.
      At all.
      Stay safe and stay free.

My only problem with the ice pick is that it lacks something that a chef's knife or a rondel dagger or anything else of the sort has. There's nothing to keep your hand on the grip if you hit bone or your hand is slippery except friction. I grant that's not so much of a problem with this tool which doesn't have sharp edges. If it were a knife it could be a quick ticket to the Emergency Room as your hand slid up onto the edge. Yes, it happens. I've seen emergency medicine papers on just that. But still, it might be better to use something that can't come out of your preferred grip with one wrong hit.

Fascinating. I've become very interested in the teachings of Fairbairn and WWII combatives lately. Especially since I got an F-S dagger. In the United States, this is oddly one of the few weapons that generally isn't legal to carry (depends on your state), although they can be possessed in most states and are readily available to us. In my state I can carry as many handguns (with a license) and knives as I can manage, but no blackjacks or "metal knuckles". The sap is unclear on legality. Our state laws are all over the place regarding things like blackjacks, saps, slung shots, and switchblades. I can also legally own machineguns, silencers, short barrel rifles and shotguns, and what we call Any Other Weapon, a catch-all term for any firearm in a nonstandard configuration or which is deliberately disguised, like a pen or cane gun. I can own switchblades, knuckledusters and blackjacks, but not carry them on the street. I especially love these unusual WWII era variants you have here on what is essentially a medieval stiletto. Started making my own reproductions and variations on the theme a couple years ago.

    • @jamesclark6420
      @jamesclark6420 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@tatumergo3931 The license I was referring to is for concealed carry. We don't require licensing for ownership of any firearm in Pennsylvania. You can legally open carry a handgun here with no License To Carry Firearms, but very few people do it. Our license also only covers handguns. No other types of weapons. I think it may be legal to pack something from the Any Other Weapon category as well, but I'm not sure.

    • @johnnemo6509

To make sense of weapons laws you have to consider that they are A: reactionary: Balisong are shown in movies and perceived as gang weapons and are therefore made illegal. B: based on lawful use and intent. Brass knuckles (are stupid) but only have use as a weapon (or as paperweights if you want your desk to look really mean) and are made illegal in many countries due to their perceived popularity as a weapon in the 19th century and their sole use as an instrument of violence. Many things are allowable inside you property as a collector which are illegal to carry. Check out the V-42 combat knife and the smatchet if you are making a WWII fighting knives collection. The Robbins of Dudley variations very interesting also.

I recommend People check out the "use of force" guidelines of their local police when developing their techniques. For example depending on location, Police in the UK are generally not allowed to hit with the closed fist to the head or with an impact weapon (at least not outside the cells). Punches or thrusts with impact weapons to the torso are allowed. Full power strikes to the limbs are allowed. Doesn't mean you won't be prosecuted for defending yourself but it's hard to be prosecuted for excessive force if you are following police guidelines. If you Hit someone in the head with an impact weapon there exists a probability of a skull fracture and death. If you hit a person and they die there is a probability you will go to prison. I'm not saying don't train in improvised weapons ...I do it everyday ...it's an inexpensive hobby and hours of fun for the whole family, but keep in mind...consequences.

    • @digs1223

I remember reading a guideline given to magistrates that went something like "an individual defending them self will not be expected to weigh up to a nicety the exact level of force required".
That might be useful if you ever use n improvised weapon.

    • @johnnemo6509
      @johnnemo6509 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@digs1223 Thanks for the comment. Yes it is true that an "untrained" individual may be allowed a degree of tolerance with regard to use of force. Unfortunately, that only goes so far. It's the police, magistrate, or Jury that will decide if you are within the bounds of "reasonable force". An improvised weapon has the advantage that it is easier to argue "unpremeditated reaction" as opposed to using something that is obviously carried with intent as a weapon. Hitting someone in the head with stone picked up after being knocked down will be likely be viewed differently to hitting them with a pre-emptive strike to the head with a truncheon. Likewise if an assailant falls to the ground after being kneed in the groin, you "might" be able to justify a single follow up kick to the body, if you repeatedly stamp on their head, or drop a breeze block on them, you're probably blown way past "reasonable force". At then end of the day it's not a question of if your actions were right or wrong; it's about presenting a story that portrays your actions as "reasonable" and using the "minimal use of force" to protect yourself or others.

I’m just thinking what charges a person in the UK could face, even if acting in a self protection scenario, if they severely injured or killed a person using a knife that ‘without good reason’ is illegal to carry. I like to use a "chisel". A cut down broomhandle to about 6 inches (so it sticks out of both sides of the hand) and chisel formed on both sides. I have used it in a hammergrip to great effect. Even against multible people 2-3 hits and done (as a lefty i block and attack with the same hand at the same time. I go for the collarbone, the area behind and head my right does a distracting blow to the chest, neck or face at the same time when blocking/attacking and i tend to get very close.
It`s a plus if you know how to get to it so the others don`t see that you already have something in your hand. It being in your skincolour is a plus.
If you intend t use a blade test it on a dead pig first (clothed and naked). You might get surprised by what you find out. You can stick a butterknife through naked ribs but a tshirt will block it.
I also like to have a mouthpiece. Put it in when you feel the mood changing and then just smile. You can see the brain of aggressors start to reboot when they see it which gives you time and also can defuse situations. If nothing else it protects your teeth.

Really thoughtful reply. It sounds like you've got a darned effective martial art working here.

      I wouldn`t call it a martial art.
If i had to call it something i`d call it human hacking. I break their thinking / desicion process as well as their normal human movement. (i basically intercept their OODA-Loop and go with the law f of averages).
I`m also left hand dominant so i can block a pnuch and attack with the blocking hand at the same time. I block and slide along the arm to get close, while my right goes with a palmstrike or the like to the chest, throat or face area as a distracting blow. Not that hard but so that i don`t telegraph with my shoulders.
This means that i`m very close and his strong arm can`t hit me (most people are right handed, all i had to fight were s far). Then i attack his strong arm movement and his head to knock him out. They also tend to get surprised by the speed, direction and violence in the action. I always have to turn my aggression down in a concious desicion so that i don`t go all the way since i can flip the switch on very fast and would go all the way if the laws weren`t as they are.
The interesting thing is you can use a blade (edge towards you) in a very, very simmilar way to the chisel/hammerfist in a icepick grip.
My guess is that it probably would work, if modified simmilar but not exactly as good for a right handed person too.
So far it worked for me.

No, it needs to be foldable to be legal to carry without reasonable excuse, which in reality means work.

I dont understand how people dont think in the basic , a good resistant pen inside a car is much better for make damage in the bad guy, the basebal stick i have been atacked twice in diferent situations and in the teo fights i won , the way is u short distance when they pull it behind even if the first u receive part of the stick in the body already is week force and after when u take his arm they always more prwocupated in dont loose the stick then defende them selfs and so you beat them very easy and they always fucked..stick just good if you are in a fight with a friend agaimst just one poor idiot ..
Tatical pen in a fight is amazing and you can write the papers in the police after without geting covid.
