I was saying how Lionel doesn't really do passenger announcements the way MTH does, but they do! They just put it in the Station Sounds Diners instead of the locomotive. Very cool!! - Ryan

Hi Sean, great review! Those cars look fantastic. I was going back and forth between getting the Hudson W/ NYC passenger cars or the Bigboy and UP Passenger set. I settled on the Bigboy and UP cars because I really wanted the Visionline Bigboy.

Nice review! The interiors are fantastic! I love the correct RPO interior. As I understand it if the car had "PULLMAN" on the letterboard it was Pullman owned and operated. If it had "NEW YORK CENTRAL" on the letterbaoad it was owned by the railroad but operated by Pullman. On the diners; I believe there was only one kitchen in one diner, though two complete diners could have been used. The other diner may been only a dining room serviced from the kitchen in the other diner. As I understand it the ends of the diners opposite the kitchen had windows equipped with blinds so that people in the dining room could look into the next diner. Remember at its best the trip was only 16 hours total. So everyone had to be seated and the meal completed, the passengers 😮😮 bedded down then woken for the early morning trip into New York or Chicago. Dinners included the main course, hors d' oeuvres, salad, soup, cheese course, and desert and coffee. Squeezing all that in to two meals a dinner and a breakfast would have been a real trick. They. needed a lot of dining room space!

A very cool 20th Century Limited passenger set, Sean. Hopefully, the Deyfuss loco will be a knock out of the park!

Hi, nice set there but I also noticed that you have a monorail on your layout as well, that's pretty cool 😎😎

Enjoyed the review. Would love the new Hudson. Might need to sell some of my earlier visionline engines

These came out pretty good. Just wish these came with people inside for the price. I pre ordered the mth Dreyfus maybe I’ll pick these cars up if they match

Yeah, they used to do it on the 18 inchers, but never have on their newer 21-inch cars.

    Beautiful cars Sean!
If memory serves the cars marked "Pullman" were actually owned (mostly or partly) by the Pullman company and staffed by Pullman personnel. Cars that were New York Central property would be marked with that company's name.
And if I were you I wouldn't wait for the Dreyfus Hudson! If you've got a plain ol' Hudson or even a Mohawk laying around put it on the head-end and give those cars a romp on your mainline! The NYC wasn't shy about substituting motive power so you shouldn't be either!

Nice. Those are beautiful cars. It would have been nice to have all reserved, all room Pullman sounds, though. They rolled out a red carpet for their guests on the Century. They didn't collect tickets on this train like they do on coaches. You would show your ticket and would be directed to the proper car and then to your room. The Pullman Conductor would take your ticket and the Pullman Porter would make sure that you had everything that you need. This was one of the finest trains in the world, so the experience would be quiet and relaxing, not noisy. I really wish that Lionel would step-up their game on crew talk and passenger car talk. The non-dialogue sounds are pretty good, though. The metal on metal sounds, like the wheels on the track. The noise in the diner, with the kitchen sounds, is pretty nice. I'm not bitching about the cars themselves, they are excellent. But, those who have the big detailed, scale layouts like yourself, Jason, Eric, Chris and Chris and for what you pay for these big, scale locomotives and cars, they should have something more prototypical that fits the quality of your layouts. Either way, and excellent video.

Did you pick up engine yet? I’m not trying to start trouble I wanted to know what’s going on with color is it that bad?

    • @seanstraindepot

I decided to cancel mine and will be returning my cars. I was going to live with the Light color (it is definitely not correct for the Dreyfuss), but the stripe mismatch was the deal breaker for me personally. Those details always bug me when things don't match. I think most people will be ok with it. I found the TMCC version set and will be doing a video on that one. I talked to Chris Raines yesterday and his video should be out soon on the whole set.

Sean thanks for this in depth review of these fantastic cars!!! I am happy I ordered them and the Dreyfus #5452 to match!! Should be one cool train to run!!

You are fortunate to save up the funds. We snagged an older version and will do a run session soon. Hopefully, we'll find the darker cars to match. Wishing lionel would stay consistent with colors. Perhaps lionels wants people to buy a second, slightly different color set. Disappointing colors changed. Hope you post a run session

Pullman was what we would call today a subcontractor. If they operated a coach or sleeper it was likely their property and therefore marked with thw Pullman brand.

Sean, if you do add figures to the interiors of these very nicely detailed cars, would you consider showing a poker game being played in one of the rooms (assuming they're big enough)? This setting on the 20th Century, while fictitious in the 1973 multiple Oscar winning movie, The Sting, is one of my favorites where Paul Newman's character outcheats Robert Shaw's in a high-stakes poker game and is used to hook Shaw's character into a greater swindle that is the basis for the movie. Although the movie is set in 1936, before the streamlined Otto Kuhler version of the 20th Century was introduced in 1938, the movie illustration clearly shows the 1938 streamlined Hudson. th-cam.com/video/_mrNhIxOGzw/w-d-xo.html

I returned these because of the engine color and mismatched stripe!
