    Dude, nice! I'm playing through BoF again right now. You're absolutely right, this is a great intro to RPGs. The "putting the cart in" for the intro is awesome, you should keep doing it.

    • @SuperDerek

      Thanks man! I've been getting feedback that my intro was a bit long and didn't feel custom, so that was my solution. I think I'll keep this up. :)

    I discovered this when I was looking for an RPG that played very classic overworld/encounter style, went in blind and was rewarded with exactly what I was looking for.

    Breath of Fire, great game and great game series. Definitely high up on my favorites list. ;) The beginning of this game is probably my biggest complaint, other than the high encounter rate. The way it starts off, where you have very little you can do in battle. With just one character and nothing special they can do, a lot of the early game is just mashing the button until you need to heal and each battle is a "war of attrition". I do still enjoy it, but I think it might put off some gamers who aren't used to older RPG's. Great review! And great choice for this review series! :)

    Enjoying this series immensely now (BoF 1 thru 4) for the 1st time in years. Just finished my favorite, BoF3 on PS1. Then I went right into the 1st BoF on SNES, which I'm still playing now. Enjoying the original one again and how its storyline is more simple & focused. Then I'll be going right into BoF2, then 4. I'll take the entire Nina & Ryu ride with the *"good"* BoF games, then stop there.
    I have Dragon Quarter, but doubt I'll play that one again. I'd love to see a new entry into the series on console -- not mobile, but more like the 1st three, yet evolved.

    • @ElBribri
      @ElBribri 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dragon Quarter killed the franchise, it sucked big time

    • @OptimalOwl
      @OptimalOwl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ElBribri I don't think it was an awful game. Just an awful entry in the series.
      In particular, I liked how they integrated the exploration system with the battle system. Starting fights well changes how those fights are likely to go for you, which feeds back into your resource management, and your prospects for surviving the dungeon. That's good stuff.

    I played this game endlessly as a kid. Unfortunately I never finished it because our house got robbed and almost all my games were stolen. In a sick twist of fate the robbers left me with my SNES itself and two games, a college football game (that I never played) and The Tick, a mediocre beat em up. It's great that this game is on virtual console though, maybe one day I will finally beat this game. Great review Derek!

    dude, great review. i really dig the BOF series, but honestly have never touched the first *gasp!* i spent a good deal of time with 3 and 4 and have messed with 2 some. i think this has been your nicest flowing episode to date, or at least of the ones i've seen. keep it up brother!

    I always loved your review videos like this since I started watching your channel a few years ago. Your enthusiasm for Breath of Fire is one of the reasons why I gave the game a shot... It was a good game, but a little too much drudgery, so I am looking forward to moving on to BoF2 and onward in the series. I still gotta give Earthbound some time of day too !
    That end video blooper reel is gold... "it rewards you heavily for beating off", wow I have been play BoF1 the wrong way

    I don't know why but your style of narration is really cool. At first I thought you sounded a little boring but as it went on I really warmed up to it and I appreciate the speed in which you speak, not too slow but not too fast either.

  • @tollban
    @tollban 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    BOF1 is my favourite RPG of all times... And this is the FIRST TIME I hear a review that I subscribe 100%; probably the best analysis of BOF1 in the net, in my opinion.
    People tend to say things like "it' s slow, it' s boring, it' s hard...". But for some, this is just a MASTERPIECE, a very rare gem with a strong personality, a very particular style and a beautiful sad-decadent-melancholic tone.
    Music is so damn good, that relaxes or motivates me every time I listen.
    Desingn is just superb, specially in combats.
    And the plot... I can tell you there' s more on that apparently "simple" plot than it seems. It' s cryptic, like old animanga, and contains a lot of mythical elements that can make you wonder and think a lot about details like Dragon Clan, Tyr-Myria, Bleu-Deis, Krypt, the races, transformations....
    A silent and laconic masterpiece.
    Hard as hell but so charismatic and unforgettable...

    • @feiwong3634
      @feiwong3634 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tollban Agreed, Bof 2 is also a masterpiece but that one you must play with the retranslation to fully enjoy it.

    • @tollban
      @tollban 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! But even with the retranslation... well, I love BOF2... But 1 has some mystic and originality I can' t describe.

    The frantic way you put the cart into the SNES at the wrong angle gave me heart palpitations bro...
    Loved this game back in the day. The music and art and character design are all great.
    Loved Ryu being able to turn into dragons, and being able to morph guys together to create bigger/better characters, and the auto battle feature was really nice too.
    I want to go back in time to when games cost what you're saying the cost...

    I love BoF, so thank you for the review!
    On the new format, I like it, the intro was kinda funny too. Maybe I would include a few screens or videos in the TV in the background though, occasionally flicking back to the title of the game, to make it a bit more appealing, though this is not a necessity.
    Keep up the fantastic videos, you need even more subs!

    I just picked up the GBA version of the game and the music doesn't sound bad at all. I'd say it's on par with the SNES version. Plus the presentation of the game has been cleaned up some too but no matter what version you're playing it's still a fantastic game!

    I rented this game as a child. My small town had two video stores: The fancy one, and the janky one. The Fancy store rented SNES games for $1.50 per night, and was open on Sunday. The Janky one rented SNES for $1.25 per night and was CLOSED on Sunday. No brainer, right? They had this game while the other store did not. It included the strategy guide (They also had Secret of Mana with guide.) I had it for the whole weekend many times. Since I was one of the only people in town who rented it I had a save file. I ground away, eventually killing dozens of the giant golden slimes. I beat the game at least twice this way. I found out later that a school mate of mine, Brad, was the former owner of the games and guides. I thanked him for many great weekends.
    I am about to beat the game again as an adult. Still a favorite. My big criticism of the game is the back and forth travel that seems like filler. Revisiting many dungeons and doing that silly messenger thing at the end of the game. Still one of my favorite games!

    I do remember playing the first two Breath of Fire games on the SNES, but never really invested anytime into a serious play through of either. Coming back to the first game now on Switch’s SNES Online catalog though I’m reminded of just how great the sprite work is. It holds up really well.

  • @VicViper
    @VicViper 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I am very lenient on old games. I can appreciate Super Hydlide or Virtual Hydlide even if they have aged (very poorly for VH).
    As for Breath Of Fire 1 however (which I got around a month ago on the Wii U), I can't get around the fact that the first few hours are spent solo stuck with a strategy that's no deeper than "Attack/Get Hit/Attack/Get hit" and repeat (using a potion once in a while), without any other option. And even when I first got Nina, the game didn't really become interesting to me. I feel like it's really cumbersome, boring, and even generic to play. Maybe it becomes better afterwards, but unfortunately, your review, while being a good one, didn't really convince me to replay the game. Sorry, the game is just too painfully slow.
    By contrast, Phantasy Star II (1989) on the Mega Drive also had an high (albeit VERY random) rate encounter and gigantic dungeons, even the first one, and the characters moved even slower, but you already have two party members in your team at the beginning of the game (plus another one you can get in just 20-30 minutes of playing and exploring) both of them can use magic (the main character is even one of the best offensive spell-casters and warriors), double-attack depending on your equipment, and the sci-fi universe was, I think, more innovative and interesting for an RPG of its time.
    If you love Breath Of Fire 1, I think you'll at least "like" Phantasy Star II.

  • @zborgerd

    Nice choice as always, Derek.
    I loved this game when I was younger. My friends and I played it through to the end. I personally feel that it deserves far more credit than it gets. I loved the battle system, unique characters, diverse (and very un-RPG-ish) soundtrack, and generally fun gameplay. It does seen that the challenge begins to level off as you play the game. Some of the characters become so powerful; Ryu's boomerangs do insane damage and Bleu's magic is quite destructive. Some of Karn's fusion forms are pretty awesome, and other characters are pretty unique as well. Items that let you ward off enemies become cheap enough that you can ignore some of the excessive battles.
    Coincidentally, I picked it up recently so that I could also give it another playthrough. I was able to score the game with a box for $16 shipped with some perseverance and waiting it out for a good buy.

      @@SuperDerek Yeah, I watched that one, masterfully done, Chrono Trigger is in my top 3 snes games! Glad I bought it back in 2004, only missing the box (so I use a reprobox), payed way to much back then, but compared to how expensive a single cartridge is now? Pfffth! It was pennies ^_^ think it was like 50$.. But you didn't stumble across those kinda games in Norway that often back then..
      Yeah, she's great, been married now for almost 18 years. She let's me pick out one expensive/rare game that I want twice a year, 3 years ago I finally recieved Suikoden 2 cib and in mint condition, been wanting that game for the last 20 years, that was my holy grail.. and she couldn't have bought any sooner, because I'm not letting her pay what it goes for today, almost three times the price.
      So after that all the games that I now want are pretty much a lot cheaper to get..
      Do you have a game that still eludes your collection?

    Breath of Fire is the quintessential "old school" RPG. There's nothing groundbreaking about it, but what it does, it does extremely well. The overworld is beautiful, the enemies are interesting, and the battle system works well. Most RPGs, at least at the time, had you primarily playing human characters. In Breath of Fire, only two of your characters are human (and even calling them fully human is a misnomer).
    My only real complaint with the game is that it features a day-night mechanic and really doesn't do anything interesting with it. I always loved how Dragon Warriors III and IV used the day-night mechanic to change interactions in towns or present monsters you wouldn't see at other times. In Breath of Fire, you just can't go into shops at night. It was a big missed opportunity to add a whole other dynamic to the game.

    I jumped into the series with Breath Of Fire II, which used a more refined and updated engine with superb graphics and sound. I loved it so much, I rented Breath OF Fire I for a week from Block Buster and was overjoyed to see that it was a direct prequel and it finally clicked that the two weirdo's on the Island on BOF II was Bo and Carn, heroes of the first game, and Evan tossing it out that Bleu was in BOF I made it even more exciting to get her in the party.
    HOWEVER.... Going backwards from Breath Of Fire II made it extremely difficult to stomach most of the music in the game. The sound chip that was used for the music was fucking awful. It was bad enough that most of the songs sounded sad and depressing, and it was downright annoying how the music always changed when entering shops/houses/INNS. I really did like the Boss battle theme though, it really invoked a sense of dread. And the game had that really early 90's hardcore charm to it that left a lot of lore and mystery to be pondered because of it's short dialogue.

    It's crazy that I just played this game just 3 days ago, and yet I managed to beat it in just 2 days!
    And honestly I thought the game was very balanced since the high encounters ment more items, money and Levels. In fact I didn't had to grind that much since 90% of the time it was just me going into a dungeon and backtracking.
    Really my only negative is that some of the late bosses are underwelming since you can pretty much beat them easily with Ryu's final dragon form.
    Overall a 7.5 out of 10. And I'm very exited for BoF 2!

    I actually just played through BoF for the first time. Back in the 90s I really wanted to play this game but none of the rental places had it and I never found a copy to buy.
    I have a pretty high tolerance for the flaws in this game because there are so many aspects that were done quite well.
    I totally agree with your comments that this game is rewarding. The dungeon layout is extremely well done and there are enough great treasures mixed in (with all those disappointing herbs) to entice the player to thoroughly explore.

    Im playing it right now in my cellphone, and having the option to slightly speed it up helps a lot in not making it annoying, specially with the high encounter rate.

      You might give BoFII a shot when you're done with the first. It feels a lot like a second attempt at making the first game again, but with lis of little improvements... Except for the translation, which suffered. Then again I've been hearing a lot about a retranslation that was supposed to fix a lot of the big problems. :-)

    • @Lomaxxx53
      @Lomaxxx53 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah totally. The thing that really kept with me is the small details in the fighting scenario.
      If im in the shore you can see the water going up and down, if Im next to the river blocked by the rock, it's empty and when unblocked it's flowing with water. It really show a great dedication and BoFII seems to have more of that.
      Also Im gonna start Terranigma after I watched your review. :D

    Hey man, I've really been digging your show so far! I've been wondering what the opening theme to the series is for quite awhile. Did you create it yourself, or is it by some chiptune artist?

      I wish that was something I was capable of putting together, but nope, it's a song I bought the rights to use from pond5.com called "Remember Videogames" Unfortunately though I don't have the rights to put it up for download, or I would. because it really is an awesome song. :)

    There's lots to like about this game so I totally get why people think so highly of it. I came in to the series at BOF III and loved it. I played about half of IV and enjoyed that too and will definitely try it again at some point.
    I have never looked up a guide on where to go next as much as I did with this game, however. It started with not having a clue that one of your characters can walk through forests on the world map if you put them at the front. I never would have worked that out! There are countless other times where I looked up what to do just to advance the main story, and I just found it annoying. I totally get exploring and finding stuff out for yourself, finding better items etc, but I like this exploration to be optional and got frustrated with having to frequently Google where to go just to progress!
    I never do this, but I have given up on the game entirely whilst right at the end, because I had to look up how to gain entry to the last area you go to (and the item/weapon you need to get in there) and it seemed so convoluted and not something I could have worked out on my own, that I just thought. "No. That's enough now. I'm moving on to Breath of Fire II." (Which I'm already enjoying a lot more!)
    Again, the general consensus is that this game is one of, if not THE favourite in the series for a lot of people and it's cool that people like it. Perhaps nostalgia plays a part in it too. But for me playing this for the first time only recently, it seemed like a bit of a chore. (Even though I did play it long enough to ALMOST finish it as there were elements I actually liked!)
    Anyone else feel completely lost without a guide, or is it just me?!

    I always thought the Breath of Fire franchise had the potential to topple the Final Fantasy franchise. Sadly, that’s not exactly what happened, but still. FF and BoF are my favorite RPG’s, hands down.

    In my humble opinion, Breath of Fire 1 is the best in the series. I experienced it 15 yesrs ago, and I enjoyed it. Anyway, Breath of Fire 2 was right behind the first one.
    Fantastic review! I always follow you gladly. A big hug! 😊

    Recently, I’ve just managed to get the true ending in this game
    And my god it was so stupid, just because of how cryptic it is.
    The first problem is getting Agni, because you have to go the Romero cave, and go into the water.
    Second, Agni is only good for bosses, and even then you have Karns best form ( poka, who can do 999 damage sometimes )
    But the worst part, is how the final battle felt too similar to the first boss, because all you did was attack until you need to heal, so it’s not really difficult.
    Still a good game thought

    I played this on the SNES years ago, and more recently beat the GBA version of BoF2. Great games. Not flawless but still great. I found the enemy encounter rate infuriating, though in 2 at least you could use an item to lessen this a bit. I did find the dungeons a bit annoying, but overall had a good time. The character arcs indeed are great and sometimes very poignant.

      @J05Youtube 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are accessories in 1 that decrease the encounter as well. There are also items (marble 3) that get rid of encounters of completely for a certain amount of steps that have been extremely useful during my playthrough. As such, I'd say encounters aren't too much of a problem in the first game atleast.

  • @Seekarr
    @Seekarr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The localization is crap. The game itself has its issues, but there is so much that is great and creative with it that it makes it worth playing. I agree on the smaller subplots, they're really well, and some are so messed up that they HAVE to be experienced: like the zombies invading Romero, and an old woman has a jar that can eliminate the zombies, BUT, her husband is a zombie (and perfectly lucid), so when you purify the lands you effectively kill her husband. Those kinds of dilemmas really pull. The encounter rate is brutal. The composer is Yoko Shimomura, who did Xenoblade Chronicles and Street Fighter 2.

    I felt like this game was nothing but aimless fetch quests. Just do this, do that, with no rhyme or reason. I never beat it because of that. It reminded me of the first Lufia which also was similar in the same way in terms of endless fetch quests.

    • @Nodsbane
      @Nodsbane 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      djhabibi04 That's why it makes little sense why they're not doing the same kind of release here, since there are people here that will want it for nostalgia reasons. I see little reason to play 1 as it's not that good anyways unless you played it before.
      I just got it and wow, my nostalgia for it is there but it's just not that good. Really slow and dry. But they probably didn't want to do the same deal so they could charge us more or something.
      That is cool that ya'll get awesome stuff there in your eShop as of late, I envy your country sometimes when I see the releases!

    There's a lot of things that the 1st breath of fire does it make sense Like character swapping in-and-out of battle And it's controls Are as simple as the controls on the original NES controls when it comes to the 1st breath of fire In also when it comes the 1st came heavy and all your characters with you makes it easier to love of them up And in the 1st game you also have long range characters and close range characters acting like long range and close characters like they're supposed to Its ideals like that is where Capcom They went wrong with the 2nd game Making the controls too complicated Breath of fire 2 And also close combat characters Attack enemies like as if they were long ranged characters Like RYU It doesn't breath of fire 2 he attacks like hes a long range character win in the 1st game he made more senseAnd the also made a mistake in breath of fire 2 might not allow when you to keep all your party's members with you making love link up a pain in the ASS When it was more fair to level up all your characters in the 1st game Considering with a certain RPG out nowadays they can fixed that little mistake they made with your party members in the 2nd game Because of that town they're building in the 2nd game There is another RPG that shows Capcom A way to fix their mistake they made with your party members by making AC can only change them in a sailing point in the 2nd game there's another RP g's it had shown how to fix things state so the town can still be belt another way to do it Tales of Vesperia The way it belt the extra town in that game proves in a remake of breath of fire 2 he would no longer have that little stupid idea they did with your party members this way they can restore the original idea they did with the 1st came into the 2nd game with your party members so it's easier to level up your characters In that 1 menu where they look at your characters with that little tiny goblin In your money If they get rid of that and cause that stuff to peer in a different location like on your actual stats making cause the inventory to allow one more character to pihringer list since unlike breath of fire 1 breath of fire 2 is a 9 character again In they should also change the dialog relating to that character's gender The character is that is a plant Custome that character looks like a girl does even when she's fuse with the shimon power The character literally turns into a mushroom girl Then what also helps you realize it's female is because when I watched final fantasy unlimited I said to myself when I saw that 1 character what is Capcom Character race doing in a square enix anime The plant characters it turns into a mushroom girl in breath of fire 2 When you see the anime final fantasy unlimited you'll think the same thing What is A Breath of fire 2 looking party member doing in a square soft anime final fantasy unlimited The character that has control over plants if you've never seen the anime you'll know what I mean when you do I think a lot of fans of the breath of fire series that had played the 2nd game would think the same thing what is a character that looks like the one from breath of fire 2 doing in final fantasy unlimited anime square soft anime Sure the company did helps him localize their 1st breath of fire to the American audience That doesn't mean they should have a right so that character to put into their Animes Seriously that was only one game localization and that was the 1st game we're talking about the 2nd game here which Capcom Publish in directing themselves It is all on them That's why that character being in final fantasy unlimited doesn't make any sense Considering a character like that was made for an RPG that was totally published and made by and completely license by And Patton by Capcom So how can final fantasy and the minute have be allowed to have a character like that in their anime when that company tall made breath of fire 2 all by themselves
