    Also... when I shade, I usually quickly outline the areas where shadows will go. This way, if I make a mistake with the placement of the shadows, I don't have to erase the shading I worked on so hard. Instead I'm just erasing a simple outline that took no effort whatsoever. It's also good if you want to preserve your eraser. When your eraser is erasing shading, it can get very dirty very quickly, but if it's only erasing a simple pencil line, then that has no effect on the eraser. Sometimes if you erase shading, it will have a noticeable "ghost" on the paper but if a line has a "ghost" it's not as noticeable. Also make your outline very light so that it's less likely to have a ghost, or so that you can shade over it.
    I just thought I would share this. It's probably already a technique, but I kinda.. realized this on my own, I guess. Idk if this will be useful to anyone, lol...

  • @-koperkat8415

    Good points on the colour. One reason why starting with gray and blues feels right is the air desaturation. Basically air isn't nothing and the more of it iit is between you and a mountain the bluer the mountain will be. And that it with clean clear air, but if you think about a dry month with a lot of dust particles in the air they will make the distant object seem blured and desaturated. This is the reason why sunny mornings after heavy night rains look so vibrant.
    It's also an important think to keep in mind when portraying heavily polluted city-scapes. Googling China's cities for a reference is a good bet.

      G. Snapdragon we all did at some point used to stress about it, I learnt to use the blur effect for backgrounds too, just painting the outline of a tree or village and blurring it makes you shity background not as shity, we are all here to learn.

    When you're a traditional artist and get bewildered at all the fancy program illustrations, not knowing anything.
    Me: you're still figuring it out? Girl, I don't even know what you're doing and it looks absolutely amazing!
    But really the piece alone looks great and it seems so easy, how you handle the program alone, and change your sketch into such beautiful work.
    I have no clue about digital art, but I do hope to try and get into it one day, it looks fun because of all the things you can do in there. Basically creating magic for the eyes.

    Hey ClockBirds! I’m extremely happy you decided to do a video on this topic! I think I learned a lot more then I though I would ^^! But I still have a question. How do you get background *ideas?* Ideas for my backgrounds is the hardest for me. Do you look up something with scenery in it yourself and import that idea into your drawing or something else? But thank you again for making this video, it helped me incredibly ^•^!

    • @clockbirds
      @clockbirds  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      i typically follow a lot of concept artists and photographers on instagram! if i see something i like, either with the scene, composition or colours i'll typically download it and keep it in a folder to go back to.
      also with these commissions, usually the commissioner will suggest environment ideas they want their characters to be in and that also really helps narrow down the idea! it can be really hard to start from nothing! the best thing you can do is to pick a environment type (e.g. field, forests, ocean etc...), look up images for those specific things (either art or photographs) and try to think up a unique composition yourself based on what you see others doing ^u^

    • @Akeari
      @Akeari 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      clockbirds / Ah, ok! The Instagram thing is a nice idea, I’ll check that and the other things you mentioned out when I have free time. Thank you! But I do have another question? Could you maybe do a video on how to make fur with your new-ish fur technique? The one where you use the Watercolor tools? I watched your other video on ‘How to draw fur’ and actually still use that fur technique now! But I’m feeling that your watercolor fur style is a little more smooth with fur? And please correct me if you’ve already made a video on it. I’m also not trying to pressure you, do whatever you want! ^•^

    Tip for PS users who feel unsure about what colours they should use for their background images;
    Take your reference and put it in PS > Filter > Dust and Scratches > Adjust / or Crystallize.
    It's not something I recommend always using (it depends on what type of artistic work you're aiming for) but it gives you a good starting point in understanding what colours a rock consists of for example.

    I really love all of your videos! This one was so helpful. I was wondering if you could make a tutorial about how to use medibang paint pro. The program seems really good and I really want to give it a try.

    Can you elaborate more on how you find the certain mood? Like you do in 1:34. Do you just play around with general tones and then adjust the environment to the light you choose?
