    You guys should really try visit a place in Swaziland called Bulembu. It's a small town (very beautiful town) which is currently being used as a child care ministry thing, but it used to be an asbestos mining town which was completely abandoned in the very early 2000s. There are still tons of abandoned buildings including a high school, 5000 houses, mine shafts etc that you should go check out. Plus the town has beautiful hikes, forests and waterfalls. I lived there for 3 years.

    Beautiful vlog, Nicole. I am so glad you gave us a little history of the place. Namibia is so beautiful and has such horrific stories of colonization. The first genocide of the last century was there as well, where the Germans massacred the Herero people. It is a little known fact but your story just reminded me of that.

    In a Nat Geo article a few years back, there was a final report on the discovery of an old Portugise trading vessel from 1535 that didn't make it around the Cape of Good Hope to India. It was battered on the shoals by a storm, made it to the beach half intact, and was finally found buried inside one of those diamond mines on a Namibian Beach. They found records of survivors logs at the site who were shipwrecked, along with surviving mercantile records in Lisbon, Portugal. They said there were diamonds ALL over the beaches. Big, fist sized ones to tiny ones naturally washed down from inland rivers, that weren't collected yet in remote Namibia 500 years ago.

    I started thinking... What about the laundry on such trips? How much clothing do you pack and do you wash it, or collect dirty laundry till you get back? >.>

    • @NicoleEddy1
      @NicoleEddy1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tricky...and I loveeeee clean clothes! We're kind of friends with the endless dust & dirt by now, but whenever we are in a town we get some laundry done. And otherwise do hand-washing at campsites.

  • @JefferyRThomas

    Oi!!!! You camped under that weaver nest??? I don't know a lot about Afrique but what I DO know is that cobras like to hang out near them... HAVE MERCY!!! (that's southern american for wow)
    Great work as always.
    Also, I meant what I twitted... if the relationship survives 3 months with just the 2 of you across the whole of that great continent and you don't want to throat punch each other..... just marry up at the great migration and don't tell anyone. You've found your true partner if you can roadtrip symbiotically

    Hello Nicole. I have been following you and Ben since he joined Chris Hadfield in the Arctic last fall. I really enjoy your vlogs. It's a lot of fun for a (later)middle-aged person from a tiny little province in eastern Canada where we have really long winters. This vlog on the abandoned mining town was interesting to me in that we have an acclaimed local photographer from here named Freeman Patterson who winters in Africa and he's done some breathtaking photography of an abandoned mining town in Namibia like the one you visited. If you got a chance to take a look I bet you'd really enjoy his photos. Looking forward to your future vlogs about this journey!
