  • We set off to the spectacular West Coast National Park, about 150km outside of Cape Town for a day of birding and exploring. I also get to try out my most recent camera purchase, the Sony a6600 - so far so good. We even got SUPER lucky with a sighting of a caracal...our first ever sighting of one!

    I have said it before South Africans are SO lucky to live in such a beautiful country with so much amazing wildlife! I recently visited from the UK and went on safari to Kruger and also stayed in the Cape Town area and I saw everything from Cheetah & lions to Whales & penguins. I had an a wonderful time and cant wait to return!

    Awesome vibes with that caracal sighting! Stumbled on this video just now and maybe not coincidentally after recently having seen a caracal in kruger myself. Also my first ever and what a sighting! Just like you I was all over the place (even climbing on the top of the car to follow it. I feel your frustration about the footage, because it is so hard to get it in focus in the tall grass. However, I've kicked myself in the head even harder. I had mistaken it for a jackal at first, it was just so camouflaged. That was when the caracal was in the grass just next to my car window... and I just sat there until he moved and I realised how stupid I was not to have my camera ready. That repeated itself as the caracal crossed the road while I was climbing back in the car. I've never felt more stupid and excited at the same time. It was just amazing!

    So awesome that you got to see a caracal in broad daylight! In my experience another great place to see them is early in the mornings between along the road to Olifantsbos in Cape Point Nature Reserve. Awesome cinematography and a great video!🍻

    Awesome vibes as always! Hey, just wanted to let you know, a few videos back, I commented about how you and Blair have kind of inspired the adventure spirit in me and I asked about backpack recommendations. Well since then, I've acquired a ton of backpacking gear and am actually leaving to go backpacking tonight! We're going to Duck Lake Trail Pass in Mammoth Lakes, CA for a 4 trip. Gonna try to capture as much of the adventure as I can and hopefully turn it into an awesome video like yours.

      That's such awesome news & definitely send me a link to the video when it's finished. Enjoy it out there, I've been to Mammoth once before and it's beautiful, I'm sure that we only saw a fraction of what it has to offer! Stay safe & happy adventuring :)

    Slowmo of the bathing bird (bulbul) was great. My three sightings of caracal have all been alongside tar roads - Tafelberg Rd on Table Mountain, the pass above Wilderness, and the road between Gansbaai and Uilkraals.

    • @NicoleEddy1
      @NicoleEddy1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, you have been incredibly lucky - how special. On our way in, we even had a conversation about caracals in the park and saying our chances are so slim, we rather need to look on the Table Mountain/Cape Point side.

    One of my favourite places, the WCNP, we spent a day there last time we visited CT (end September 2019, a day before Postberg closed). missed the crowds & got out just as it was closing time. Saw Cape cobras all along the road, loads of them, ostrich families, many tortoises, bontebok & had excellent close-up sightings of eland plus a steenbok. Our daughter spent some time in the water just beyond Preekstoel, great day! Where are those boardwalks located? When are you guys coming to Peru for birding? The Manu road route would be perfect - about 925 species recorded, around 450-500 regularly seen. If not then straight into the Amazonian rainforest in Tambopata, easily accessible, about 645 species on the list :) Sure to be some lifers there. Peru also won the Global Big Day, even with the current virus situation, 1351 species were recorded on that day. Upload again soon, being from CT (grew up in Milnerton), I really miss it living here in Cusco at approx. 3400m up in the Peruvian Andes. Your vids cure some homesickness & produce that little bit more of healthy homesickness for our next trip. Stay safe. Looking forward to your next vid!

      Thanks Mike, any new of when you & your family might be able to visit SA again? Your trip to WCNP sounded incredible, I have so many memories as a child playing in the waters at Preekstoel with my whole family, and then having to float our cooler boxes when the tide had come in. Those boardwalks are situated at a bird hide called Abrahamskraal, a dirt road on the right if you're driving towards Preekstoel.
      Sheesh, that sounds like heaven - I need to check it out online & see what this Manu Road Route is all about, but 925 bird species is just unbelievable, we definitely will have to add that to the 'to do list'. Thanks for sharing that :)

      @@NicoleEddy1 Thanks Nicole, hope you are all well over there. Hoping to make another trip next year. Really like the WCNP - memories of UCT rock art field trips based there & I was the one who photographed those ancient footprints found near the lagoon for the newspaper release many years ago. My travel company, Tambopata Travel, has been on hold virtually since Feb 2019, so tough times, but starting to get requests again now - slowly but surely - I specialise in the Tambopata rainforest a short flight from Lima or Cusco. We normally go to CT for at least 2 months at a time to make the airfare worthwhile & take advantage of my wife's accumulated leave. Last time (2019), we rented an air b&b in Blouberg which was great. We also rented a car for 2 months, so quite costly, but always worth it. Our daughter (9 years old at the time) really got into wall climbing at Cape Rock, we managed to get up TM that time in a fog which was mysterious & very special, also went out boat-based whale watching - unfortunately 2019 was the worst whale season for some time so land-based was not great. I used to work at Grootbos NR as a full-time guide (1998-2000) so know the Gansbaai area well. Our daughter is really into arthropods at the moment, especially spiders. not many species up here in Cusco, but we do get some garden species, crab, jumping etc. & 3 species of violins. Our next rainforest trip will be different with this new interest of hers - arthropod heaven - giant bird-eating spiders, Brazilian wandering, Saltis, orb-webs, community spiders etc, etc... The rainforest awaits :) and I look forward to your next vlog - the relaxed style of your vids really gives a sense of place.
