Phil Collins once described the way his audition for Genesis went. He actually was the first one there but was the last on the list to actually do the audition and Peter Gabriel said "No problem, just lounge at our swimming pool while we have the others do their auditions."
At which Phil went "Swimming pool, have I died and gone to heaven?" but the door of the rehearsal space was left open, so while Phil was swimming, he heard what the other hopefuls were doing and making mental notes on how the songs went and what the band were looking for in a drummer.
So when Phil's turn came around, he was prepared, delivered and got the job, and the rest as they say is history.
