This is something that I observed and wanted to share. Some people seam to get their significance from sports teams. Lets be honest, most people don't have an important job. Therefore they don't get their significance from their job. For example, would you feel important if you were a mailman or assembly line worker? The jobs are need but anyone can do them. Many people seem to have the belief that if their team wins that makes them a winner, because they are a fan. I've noticed this with coworkers. It's like they are depressed on Monday if their team loses.
Sports fills a spiritual and accomplishment void for many men
Great analysis! It may be an unpopular take, but I couldn't agree more!
I have always been baffled by the amount of energy and passion that the populace dedicates to anything sportsball, especially given how irrelevant and inconsequential it is.
Your analysis makes a lot of sense and I agree that sports has huge political and cultural power. I don't think politicians understand this and use it their advantage. I think you have city councils that want to keep their local sports team and to win reelection, so they are willing to use the city coffers, even if it's not to the city's financial advantage.
12:27 it's the same in homogenous countries, they also need sports as an outlet
True, but it’s less of a geopolitical imperative in those societies contain tribalism.
it's also local... I live in the NYC area and there's no shortage of cultural things to do, so sports is in the background even in the biggest media market. I've also been to Kansas City which has much less culture and you see Royals and Chiefs symbolism everywhere. It's not just young men, but lower-status, lower-cultured people they are mollifying, the same folks attending mass regularly
give them bread and circuses
Panem et Circenses
i long time since i claimed that pornography is subsidized
