Glad you gave the thumbs up on Prince. He was just 17 or 18 when he used to borrow my guitar for his early demos and even then, those of us in Minneapolis recognized something truly innovative was going on in his style and even his recording techniques. Moon Sound on Dupont had nothing for gear in the mid 70s.. a Tascam 8 track and a Model 5 board with 8 inputs. Shag carpet on the walls and egg carton ceilings. We did have an outboard spring reverb. "DI" meant running your guitar cable straight into the board, dry. Prince used my old SG that way and then added another channel with the hi-hat mic on just the strings, no amp, just the acoustic sparkle of the strings. When they were blended it was amazing.

"Grok" a word invented by Robert Heinlein in the book Stranger in a Strange Land. General meaning, is "beyond complete understanding." A "Martian" word

    • @donaldfilbert4832
      @donaldfilbert4832 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I was going to say that Grok means more than just understand something - rather - "to be fully impregnated by a things essence" !! To know it to a point of being it !!

    • @strathound
      @strathound 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes, it's more than understanding it. You must eat it. You must be it. It must be you. That is what it means to "grok" it. To be one with it ... literally.

Grok (often misspelled as Grock) is an invented word from a sci-fi book. From memory it was Stranger in a Strange Land.
It’s meaning is along the lines of “total comprehension”.
Good book, I might add. Robert Heinlein author.

Just changed the strings on the 12 string I gave my nephew. Man that takes patience especially the tuning. Six extra tuning pegs and 54 year old eye sight do not work well together. My normal double vision turned the 12 tuners into 24. Got her done Aloha

Man remarks on how the upstrokes and down strokes bring out different sounds on a 12 string and then launches into an epic improv tune to demonstrate. Such a boss.

Wrong Wrong and Wrong. As a player for a long time I do have a good ear and can figure out stuff pretty well but I have always used tab for various reasons. Sorry but there is just some times when tab comes in handy.I'll make a video of non common chords and see if you can figure them out by ear.He even gives verbal tab by telling everyone what fret and string of chords in some videos.

This may be my favorite episode yet. Sweet sounds ringing out on that 12 string. Your show reminds me of being a kid reading Tommy Tedisco’s column in guitar player magazine. He tells some great stories of being a session player in LA. He also has a great sense of humor, much like yourself.

Hey Tom, I can remember starting to venture into the 12 string in the 80’s and my uncle showing me a VCR tape of Leo Kottke. It blew my little mind. Thanks for the amazing lessons, they give me the same sort of wow factor. It seems as musicians we hit plateaus that can take longer and longer to overcome. Thank you for getting me over the self boredom of plateaus.

Hey Tom and Larry’s kids: I realized one reason I love these vids. I’m two years older than you Tom at almost 53 for context. That 12 string piece was a kick start to me mentally, it was so nice. I’ve had time to play more and I want to play more thanks to you, but I felt like I was in a rut. Hearing you play that 12 string piece reminded me of when an album came out back in the old days, one that really got your attention. Except we get to hear the artist show/talk about it. Also love your discussions because of how down to Earth they are. You are the bridge between us regular guys and and the guitar as a music maker, from those who know. I appreciate the gift you offer us. Thanks. PS: For some reason I spent the last three days learning the lead to Black Dog. Almost there.

Hey Tom. This was like finding money you thought you lost. 12 string guitar has been a constant companion for me since I was 14 years old and I’m now 56. My parents had Glen Campbell’s “Gentle on My Mind” record in the house. I played it and said , “I need a 12 string in my life”. And I’ve always had one. I did learn to play that song but I’m a rank amateur. I’d love to hear you and Sarah do a version of that tune because it’s pure nostalgia. Thanks. I love these videos. Cheers

There’s plenty of information to figure this stuff out on your own, you can see and hear everything Tom is doing and you can even slow TH-cam down by more than 50 percent. “Teach a man to fish...”

Know what helped me develop my ear? Learning just a little bit of theory. Not a lot. Just a little. That and just taking time to sit down, close my eyes, and listen to some great players. I don't have a great ear or anything but it's a lot better than it was the first ten or so years I played.
Man, you are like an amalgamation of all my old friends, personality-wise. You're cool but in a down-to-earth way. Love these videos, and have been so glad to have them during these times in particular.

    Hello Tom,
I went into a music store today to pickup one of my guitars dropped off for a setup.
I plugged into an amp to play around to check out the intonation.
I did not kill. I froze. Over the noise of failure ringing through my head, I heard your words about killing in a music store.
I failed. Next time I will be better prepared.
Although I met with failure today, I am inspired to get better.
Thank you for your lessons and words of wisdom and inspiration.

“Hey Tom”- old graphic designer here. I appreciate your mentioning Val Garay, and with a nod to the old school ways (say, cutting tape vs. Pro Tools). Just yesterday I had an exchange with an old photographer colleague, who kind of summed it all up: “We were dealing with this stuff before the internet and Macs. We dealt with real things that didn’t have an undo button. We dealt with consequences of mistakes and didn’t have filters that did the work for us. Touching materials engaged our imagination.”
    Fuckin’ A.

A bit of small world- Shawn Tubbs is featured in a Brett Papa (Papastache) video from 2018. At the end they talk about all the guitar monsters loose in Nashville, and eventually they get to Little Tommy. Shawn says beyond being a session monster, LT is his favorite player of all time to just listen to. Then Brett mentions the ending lick in Carrie Underwood''s song Last Name. I was aware that Shawn had to pretty much learn her catalog on crazy short notice, via his episode on the Truetone Lounge, but I did not know that many, if not all those licks, were created by Tom. The phrase 'freak of nature' was even used in the discussion- check it out.
Shawn and his brother grew up with the Stone Temple Pilots in San Diego, and appear in their MTV Unplugged episode. Shawn is the long hair on guitar to Scott's right. Pretty cool history there. So Shawn and Dean Deleo go way back.
So, hey Tom- how did the project with Dean Deleo start? And do all the comments you mention really start with 'hey Tom'?

I often find myself wishing I could have had the internet at my disposal when I was growing up and teaching myself guitar. Man...I remember with great clarity and a sense of nostalgia running vinyl @ 16 RPM on my mother's old Zenith console stereo to learn all the fast stuff like Yngwie, Eddie and Warren DeMartini. The Billy Gibbons stuff didn't require any such effort, but man...that cat is one soulful player. I think it helped develop a pretty good ear as I can pretty much just "see" whatever I hear and play whatever is in my head. Maybe the technology is just making thousands of "paint-by-numbers" guitarists? Anyway, great stuff as always man.

another old school thing that I think is becoming a little lost, is tuning by ear. In a FB group a conversation was started about tuners etc. I mentioned that I often tune by ear, and someone commented that not everyone is blessed with perfect pitch, I was thinking to myself about all the years I spent just practicing tuning. No perfect pitch for me, it was a lot of time spent working on my ear!

Tom, I appreciate all you do. I just lost my father a few months ago and he was a musician. I had lost my love for music, but thanks to your videos I have regained the hunger to learn. On a lighter note, if you could listen/play one Steely Dan album for the rest of your life, what would it be?

501chorusecho I’m right there with ya....gaucho is a dandy. I really think their chord structures can separate the men from the boys. God Bless

Gesss Ussss, when you go into "TOM TRANCE" and bring up stuff on the spot, it is beyond amazing. Where do you pick up the various chord melody voicing leads? Does that just come from intimate knowledge of the fretboard?

Hey Tom, a guitar teacher once told me I would never be good (I started later in life), but that I could always be better. Thanks for making me better. BTW, loved the 12 string song. You mentioned Richie Furay and this song reminded me of Poco.

Great video from Tim. Prince playing while my guitar gently weeps on the George Harrison induction. By far my favorite music video.

You never ever see anyone do this! Chords, melodies, beer & coffee. No fake shit, no gear talk, cages, systems, and so on. Hey Tom you are the man. I don't have to say "hey Tom" but since everyone else does I must.

Hey Tom. I have noticed that you wrap the strings around the tailpiece of your ES-335 on one but not the other. What factors go into your decision to wrap vs. non-wrap?
    Thanks Uncle Larry!

"grok" = "understand", as used by Robert Heinlein, in his sci-fi novel, Stranger in a Strange Land (as probably already noted in the VCB many times!)

Old skool like you, bro: developing a good ear and touch is right up there with chasing tone and reading the dots. Tab helps, but the luxury of having Uncle Larry on tap to loop away and learn from is bloody magic.

Gorgeous shit Tommy! Dunno if you ever listened to any of the playing of Ralph Towner? His 1979 "Solo Concert" really changed my life; I can't play like he does, but it's such beautiful and and imaginative music! Thank you for laying this on us!

Hi Uncle Larry. Have you ever worked with Jeff Bova our in LA? Jeff played keyboard (a Farfisa mini-compact) in a band with me in our high school daze in the 1960s, before he made his mark with Herbie Hancock on the Rockit album and tour. He now runs a studio Bovaland as a producer in Hollywood. Your comment about playing the bass line with your thumb reminded me of the Billy Gibbons interview with Sweetwater which I watched recently. He showed how he plays “Tush.” He does a thumb slide from F to G on the 6th string leading to a double stop on the 5th fret of the 3rd and 4th strings.
