That was the very best picker available, always dreamed/wished I could afford one. I felt feeding ground cob corn was the best for cattle and chickens. Your warning to your son was always the words yelled to kids around equipment. I had a 1 row John Deere picker, November 1, 1976, Southern end of the Thumb of Michigan, Dad was driving the tractor, I was walking along side the picker. Corn husks were tight to the cobs and that picker would not husk clean. I swiped at a cob and the rollers caught my RH glove, pulled in 3 fingers until the slip clutch activated. Dad stopped the PTO and I yelled "Dad, my hand is caught". He grabbed a Cresent wrench and backed my hand out. Those 3 fingers were white and just skin and bone. I pulled off my LH glove to hide it from my Dad. We high tailed it to the house, Mom came outside to see what was happening and asked to see my hand, the fingers were back to size and one was bleeding, I could still move them. My Dad grabbed the car keys and drove my wife and I to the hospital, after we reached the hospital, she is sure we should/could have died during that ride because of Dad's driving. The following week, at an eye appointment, Dad was told he had cataracts on both eyes! Fingers are still on my hand and have worked for almost 46 years since. Thanks for the video and another opportunity to share about quick tempered young men.

Yes sir, I remember a lot of farmers in W. MD had fingers missin' from corn pickers! 👍

@@ardurbin2 A 60 plus yr old farmer in my area lost both hands that same year trying to clear a combine header of plugged corn. I realized I was Blessed!

What a story, I’m sorry the video brought up such a bad memory. We got yelled at a lot at harvest time about loose clothing and plugged machines. I have a good friend whose dad lost all his fingers unplugging a green chopper. It’s a miracle we all made it!

@@zawadafarms7402 True but a bad story at the time brought another 46 years of being a little more carefulness to my life.

You were lucky. My neighbor lost all his fingers on one hand and then they had to amputate more after gang green set in. He was getting off a mounted picker and got his hand caught in the husking rolls. He had to literally rip his own fingers off to get out. He got back in the seat of the tractor and drove up to the neighbors milking parlor for help.

Those New Idea pickers were quite popular. We have one in the shed here but don't use it anymore.

What's the height on your 1650 to the top of canopy? Looks much lower than mine

Google says 1971. Dad must have purchased it at an auction sale in the 1980’s.
