I thought Steve Martin was good in Parenthood. It is both a comedy and a heartfelt movie. Lots of other famous actors are in it too who were very young at the time such as Keanu Reeves and Joaquin Phoenix. It's a really good movie.

Really bums me out that a whole generation dont know who John Candy is. Its like growing up without The Muppets or classic Looney tunes cartoons... is a deprivation of the human spirit.

"You shared a motel room with a complete stranger? Are you crazy?"
"Not yet. But I'm getting there."
Fun Fact: After the credits, Neal's boss is still at his desk analyzing the ads, his Thanksgiving dinner sitting on his desk.
Crazy Rant Fact: The Marathon Car Rental scene is exactly one minute long from the time Steve Martin starts his tirade to the time the attendant ends the scene. In that sixty seconds, the "F" word is used nineteen times. The film would've easily been rated PG or PG-13 by the MPAA if it weren't for this one scene.
New House Fact: Neal's (Steve Martin) house was also a set built from scratch, consisting of seven rooms, and taking five months to complete. It ended up costing $100,000, which angered Paramount executives, and caused turmoil on the set.

Great review as always. I love your channel!
Kevin Bacon’s character was actually the character he’s playing in another John Hughes movie called “She’s Having a Baby”.
I heard originally they were going to put that taxi race scene in both films but for whatever reason, it just didn’t flow correctly in the other one so they left it out.
And you are correct about the simplicity of this film. When you have a good script, and good actors, you don’t need all the gimmicks Hollywood throws at us now. Just let good actors tell a good story.

Kevin Bacon stars in the 1988 John Hughes film She's Having a Baby. William Windom (the actor looking at the magazine layouts) and the old man in the plane, also appear in that film. John Hughes liked to recast actors. Steve Martin's colleague who warns he'll never make the 6pm flight plays Ferris Bueller's dad in Ferris Bueller's Day Off along with the Marathon Car Rental lady played the secretary at the high school. John Candy stars in Uncle Buck, but he also had a small part in Home Alone.

If you ever get a chance to look into the deleted scenes, they’re actually pretty interesting. They cut out a lot of the stuff with the wife. Because she was actually convinced that he was having an affair. That’s why she wasn’t believing anything that he was saying about spending time with a “Dale”. She thought it all sounded fishy, and that he was doing some thing. At the end, it was a relief for her, because she could see that he was telling the truth.

My little bro and I love this film. I actually bought him The Canadian Mounted book for Christmas, it is in fact a book choked with trivia, some behind the scenes stuff, deleted script excerpts, lots of stories, it's a joy to read. One such deleted scene, which adds context, is the hotel room break in: they're robbed by the pizza delivery guy who brought food to the room. As Neal's in the shower, Del takes the $700 out of Neal's wallet to pay. Del only tips the kid $1, though, before putting the cash back. So the kid loiters in the corridor until they're asleep.

I love this movie. It's a Thanksgiving tradition for my family. It's hilarious and has a lot of heart. John Candy and Steve Martin play really well off each other. Also, it's not the home alone house, but the house was specifically built for this movie and cost over $100,000 which pissed off Paramount executives.

He was one of the best comedic actor of his time.
You are always in for a treat with his movies.
Uncle Buck, Summer Rental, The Great Outdoors and many more.
Steve Martin's Pink Panther movies are weak compared to the original movie series with Peter Sellers as inspector clousseau. But he was brilliant in movies like, The three Amigos, Roxanne, Parenthood and moore. You Have a lot of fun movies to watch.

In my teens my family had a vacation like this. It was the first time we were visiting back home since my Dad moved us across the country. Everything that could go wrong went wrong from the engine going wrong to having a flat tire & having to stay at a hotel longer than we planned but what's interesting is it was the best vacation we ever had once we got there though it was short because of all the inconveniences on the way there. What's interesting is the next year when we visited everything went right on the way there but when we got there it was the worst vacation we had though we had more time for personal reasons I won't mention.

Anything w/ John Candy or Steve Martin is great. Steve Martin wrote a film called "L.A. Story" which he stars in and is great. My favorite films featuring Steve Martin are "The Jerk," "The Man With Two Brains," and "Bowfinger" with Eddie Murphy. John Candy is a classic Canadian comedian and actor who is much-beloved in America. I love his supporting work in films like "Splash" with Tom Hanks and "Stripes" with Bill Murray.

You NEED to watch Uncle Buck! It’s another John Hughes comedy starring John Candy. It’s an awesome tour de force for John Candy (he’s brilliant in it) and has some truly heartwarming moments. I think you’ll really like it.
Steve Martin told a story that the ending between him & John Candy in the train station was longer. Candy told the story that his wife, Marie, had gotten cancer & they spent all their money for her treatment - but she still died. Because they spent all their money on her care, he lost the house & he was so heartbroken over losing her that he packed up his trunk & left & never went back. Steve Martin said that John Candy did such an amazing job with that monologue that it literally left him & the film crew weeping. It was brilliant, but John Hughes felt it was SUCH a sad moment that it pulled the film down too much, so he cut it.
Another amazing Steve Martin movie is his updated version of “Cyrano de Bergerac” - Roxanne. It’s sweet, funny, & romantic.
    Enjoy!

Ollie, you've seen John Candy before. He was Barf (the half-man/half-dog sidekick) in Spaceballs. You might want to catch yourself up on the rest of his filmography, not just as a film lover, but as a Canadian, since he's one of your most famous exports. Uncle Buck (another John Hughes film) should probably be next on your list. The Great Outdoors and Stripes (though he's only a supporting character) are two others that I'd recommend.

Great reaction/review. This is a great holiday movie, very funny, but a memorably warm, and ultimately very kind-hearted film. And I have to agree that Martin and Candy were perfect here.
The two funniest comedies of the last 40 years (aside from the Naked Gun films), at least for me, are Four Weddings and a Funeral and A Fish Called Wanda.

Supposedly Jeri Ryan got fired from this film. She couldn’t stop laughing at Steve Martin and John Candy for her scenes on the bus. The old man on the plane was Bill Erwin who you saw in a previous review of Somewhere in Time. He was Arthur the hotel bell boy. If you ever do the rest of Star Trek TNG he has a guest spot as an old friend of Dr. Crusher.

Such a great reaction, and yes "Roxeanne" is definitely worth a watch. I would also highly agree with other commentors about checking out John Candy in "Uncle Buck" for yet another McCallister-esque house (with Macauley Culkin featured in it!) and Steve Martin in "Bowfinger." Glad you got to see this one, Ollie! It's really a timeless feel good movie. One of a few I still randomly quote to this day.
For more Steve Martin I'd sugest :
    - The Jerk (this was when he was the biggest stand up comedian around...playing arenas, and much of the comedy in the movie is very similar to his stand up act,
    - The Man With Two Brains
    - Parenthood
    - Leap Of Faith (very underrated)
    Some more John Candy:
    -Armed And Dangerous
    -Summer Rental
If you want to check out another movie with a similar "road trip" vibe as this one but with two different personalities doing their thing: "Tommy Boy" It's a riot!
Yes that was the Home Alone house and BTW John Candy was IN Home Alone as the leader of the Polka band that the mom had to ride with to get to Chicago.

      L.A. Story
A Simple Twist of Fate (in my opinion his most underrated film)
      All Of Me
(All these movies directed by Frank Oz - Muppeteer behind Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Yoda, and others)
      Little Shop of Horrors
      Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
      House Sitter
      Bowfinger
And Uncle Buck (also directed by John Hughes) is *THE* John Candy film that needs to be seen!

    Xenial here.
That my friend is a "click-clack" device, formally known as a credit card imprinter. You can still buy them off of ebay.
You know how check books have a carbon copy underneath each check? Well, instead of having your checking account number, you'd hand over your credit card. They would slide the slider and it would imprint your number on the merchant carbon paper. I don't know if the buyer got a copy of the merchant slip. I was basically a toddler/young kid.
Come to think of it. I'm not not sure of I had a debit card as a teen with my first checking account. I had checks and an ATM card. Debit did exist, but they would still put it through the click clacker.
Unlike POS payment systems where you swipe your card, the merchant did not know if your card was declined unless it was called onto the processor. But when I saw my parents buy a thing or 2, I font think the cashier called a processor. P.S I had to Google search about the processor bit.
With POS systems, you'll get approved or declined om the spot.
You know how credit cards have minimum payments due each month? I read that back in the days that if you did not pay in full with American Express or missed 1 payment, the card would be declined and the merchant cut up yoir credit card.
Nowadays, if you get declined, it's just "whoops. My bad. I'll just use another card." The merchant won't cut up yoir credit card.

It is really telling how the only reaction I see people have after they bust the car into the building, is to drive away screwing over the owner who was nice enough to let them barter room and board for the night.
People always make such a big deal that 'Kevin Bacon' is in this film, and I just say 'Who is that and should I care?', answer of no.
