- After losing my Philodendron Pink Princess to root rot caused by a dense soil mix, I realized the importance of the right potting soil. In this video, I’ll show you just how easy it is to create your own perfect potting mix using 5 simple ingredients: coco coir, perlite, zeolite, orchid bark, and worm castings. These ingredients ensure proper drainage, aeration, and nutrient retention, giving your plants the best chance to thrive.
We’ll also walk through repotting two stunning philodendrons-my Philodendron Strawberry Shake and Philodendron Caramel Marble. I’ll share tips on how to handle delicate roots, choose the right pot, and ensure the perfect environment for your plants.
Say goodbye to soggy roots and hello to happy plants! If you’ve struggled with soil before, this is the video for you. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more plant care tips!

I keep coming back for how calming your voice is! Keep 'em coming plant dad! 🪴
You're so sweet. Thanks for the support!
@@ILiftPlants you're welcome!
That's a great mix, when I first started making my own chunky mix I used a very similar recipe. But I do find you have to stay ON TOP of watering because the water retention is so low. I also hated having to order stuff from amazon and wait just to repot things. I really like using a hybrid mix now with a base of normal potting soil and lots of added better gro orchid bark mix and perlite to make it chunky. I also use expanded shale pebbles in my recipe which you can get along with the potting mix and perlite at HEB for very cheap. I usually go to Lowes for the better grow orchid bark. I love that it includes activated charcoal, which a lot of chucky soil mix recipes include to help keep the soil clean by absorbing toxins and smells that contribute to rot.
I agree! It can be a bit tricky to water at first. But I’d rather not have that dense nasty soil.
Aww love your goodbye to your plant. They are living beings after all ❤❤❤
They sure are. I’m going to try again with that kind.
Lol the departing words to the pink princess 😂
😂😂😂😂😂
Great video! And shoutout to Tina Turner!!!
You know it! 😊 That’s her name!
Hey Steve and everyone.
Hey there!!!!!!
Enjoy your content ❤
Thanks so much Travis!
This white bookcase in the background is awesome. I love it
Thanks so much!
Your plants are going to be so greatful for this mix!
You know it, I’m excited to see them thrive!
I'm so glad you're doing this! Making my own soil mix is one of my favorite things to do. I'm actually making my cacti/succulent mix today ☺️
Me too! It’s so much more rewarding to grow them in a mix you made yourself!
That mix looks great!
I have several of those type of bins/containers to store the ingredients in, its satisfying how they stack. Put them on an ikea shelving unit/rack and call it my soil bar 😆
Though those sacks of soil are easier to shove into a hidden spot
So nice that she will plantsit for you!
My mom does it when we are on holiday for more than a week even though she has to drive for about an hour to get here. Im so appreciative of that, never have to worry about my plants when Im away
Thank you so much! It is a blessing to have a plant sitter who actually knows what they’re doing!! I know you’re grateful!!!!!
Perfect video Steven. Will have to go to dollar tree for the container. I have all that in the garage. Will definitely try this. Thank you. Have a wonderful evening and Friday.
😊❤🪴👏💯👍
Thank you so much Tree. I am going to see if I can find more “finds” at Dollar Tree
Great video. Thanks Steve🪴
Glad you enjoyed it
I aways wanted to take on the challenge of making my own soil. Thanks for the insight.
It's easier than you think!
Get that coco coooiirrr 🤗
Hahahahahah
You have great energy! Glad I found your channel!
Awwww. I appreciate you. Thank you so much and thanks for subscribing.
Strawberry shake is lookin awesome!!
You should see it today. It already looks even better!
I feel like I preach pumice over perlite. Perlite eventually floats up to the surface as to where pumice stays in place within the soil mix. Being porous, it retains moisture and nutrients and then releases them slowly over time to the root system as it needs it! Pretty awesome!
You’re totally right about pumice! I thought I bought pumice, but I got zeolite instead. I was going to make my own pon but figured this was more important.
@ILiftPlants That'd be awesome! Do you think you still will? Maybe a video?!
I really appreciate the great information as well as your positive energy!☺💚🪴
You're so welcome! I'm all about that positivity!
Yep, love me some ME! 🥰
Great video.
Thanks so much! I’m glad it resonated with you!
Will you do a follow up on the plants?.

I am Taking notes!
📝
Thanks so much!
Thank you for this.. and it's on time bc for the past few weeks I've been thinking some of my plants need better soil with more nutrients. Some soil looks just old and flat
Exactly! It ends up being so dense and keeps a lot of moisture. Good luck with making your own mix.
That's cool
Thanks!!!!!!
🪴Happy Planting🌿
Thanks for watching!
You should try a smaller pot
For the caramel
It doesn't look messy
It’s not. It’s actually really light.

Her name needs to be strawberry shortcake Steve!
Believe it or not the Pink Princess I threw away in the video was Strawberry Shortcake. Lmao. That’s why I was struggling to find a name for the strawberry shake. Janeé suggested Tina turner. I kinda like that. Tina loved to shake!
@@ILiftPlants Haha oooh noo. Yes! Tina!!
It's so ridiculous how storage bins can get so expensive!
I couldn’t believe it!
Name her Jazzy
I like that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yesss! Worm castings for the win!🙌 🪱 💩 lol
😂😂😂😂😂😂 I didn’t want to touch it with my hands. Lmao
@ILiftPlants Lol I'm literally the same with it 🤣
