I couldn't imagine how much it would cost to restore these houses. I'm glad to see that Detroit is making some progress in restorating these beautiful homes.

Love the Video. Happy to know that a lot of the buildings are being restored. It is sad to see them in such bad shape.

@charlestonchewy I've known some folks that have taken some of these homes and restore. Yes, they sink a decent amount of money into them. However, it is mostly sweat and toil. They and a few friends work together and do a gut rehab. They strip the walls down to the bare studs, rewire, and replumb the entire house. Fortunately, if the slate roofs are intact, they can be repaired and the very solid hardwood floor can we refinished. Great opportunities for anyone with some construction skills.

It's nice to hear that 40% of 90 structures are being saved. But will it last? There has already been one failed attempt to save Brush Park, and Detroit's economy is still in ruins. Time will tell.
And I, too, love this video presentation.

Thank you both for the kudos. If only more people understood the complexity of the city instead of showing only "sensational footage" of a burned out area of homes that were originally constructed with an expected useful life of only 60 yearsin 1950 or earlier. Those videos tend to give viewers the impression that the entire city looks like that. Remeber the story of the Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf? Which is the most durable: one built of sticks, wood boards, or brick?

This shows you that Detroit can be saved! The city government needs to recognize the effort people make to restore a neighborhood. The next thing-start making it attractive to build-tear down the blighted neighborhoods, and replace them with new houses. Finally, punish vandalism severely-no more "tagging" grafitti, etc.

Detroit has always been a mosaic of high quality and lower quality architecture. Some was built to last for three or four hundred years. Others have exceeded their useful life. It largely has to do with the location of the previous 25 villages and towns that were absorbed into Detroit during the first two decades of the twentieth century and the underlying land quality of the area. Location location, location.

@sonnybrown It's one of the royalty-free instrumentals from the youtube audioswap library. I believe that the group is Musicshake that provides a lot of material

Thanks for the twinkle of hope for a few of these majestic structures. Lets see how long the roaches will allow the windows to stay in their frames.

It's A Shame Beautiful Homes..Too Bad I'm Not A Billionaire..I Would Form A Group Of Other Billionaire's That Want To Give Freely..Not For Personal Gain..To Rebuild Detroit And Make It A better Place For All Humans..That Would Be A Great Legacy!*

@EconCat88 Thanks for the updated video of the near east side. I put together a lot of my videos fro my Urban Econ course at WSU. Take a look at the GLFG video on either the plumstreetmusic or urbanecondetroit channels. I am a core participant in this project. --Dr. John Sase

@bigtown I posted this video in response to the deluge of Detroit as ghetto, dead, etc. that are easy to make. There is a square mile of land on the near east side and another on the near west side in old "walk to work" blue collar neighborhoods. Those houses were built in the 1920s to last for 60 years. The areas are slated for redevelopment and many speculators like Matty Maroun (owner of the Ambassador Bridge) have been buying up parcels for a number of years.

In Europe these old houses would be considered fairly new. Seeing them like this is like walking through the DIA and seeing a Rembrandt painting that someone has slashed with a knife.

2:12 - 2:20 That is what can happen if everyone can work together and restore all these beautiful buildings in that city, that is what can happen, if most of those structures were restored to their former glory Detroit would be beautiful once again, we got to do this together, don't just bulldoze these buildings for no damn good reason, preserve and restore them.

The truth is, unions & Democrats (and Republicans) built the wealth in Detroit. Unions helped the middle class and the prosperity of millions of Americans by ensuring they were well paid for a hard days work. Globalization and the removal of trade barriers destroyed Detroit because suddenly the Japanese could take benefit of the high USD and get cheap cars into the USA. Unions are in decline in the USA, manufacturing is in China and how is the economy going now?

There is a group that is cleaning up Brush Park. However, I suspect that private investors/owners are responsible for the roof repairs to houses that can be saved.

Thanks. Very well put. You may also find some value in a video that I named "Detroit is One Big Ghetto" over on my urbanecondetroit channel.

You want to join my effort in doing this i need tons of followers, they need to come down to every single abandoned building in the city and either restore the structure of recycle it, i prefer restoring, but it needs to happen with all of us we can do so much and make the city beautiful again, we can do it. Most people say get rid of all those buildings, you can't that, the city could even revitalize itself, take down all the terribly burned out destroyed buildings and make parks.

Why did YT place that little slider between the play/pause button at the time counter?
