John Rutter is a genius composer for this song version and many others he's written, like Count Your Blessings and Christmas Lullaby, beautiful tunes. This one was my dear cousin Rachael neé Leaf's favourite, sadly gone to rest Good Friday '23, used to stay with her twice a year, and it was played 2-3 times in the weekend. Another good, solid, stately and uplifting hymn of the Church totally DESECRATED by the "ARRANGER." "Arrangers" exist to put their own spins on OPM (Other People's Music,) and the result is invariably awful. A triple pox upon all "arrangers." In short, what was a good piece, now sucks. If one looks at the first few seconds though, it would appear that John Rutter was trying to tell the flute and the piano to slow down but in vain...
He didn't write the hymn, it dates back to the mid 19th century. I was singing it in my school in the 1960's

We are singing this song in our freshman choir, and it is defenetly not supposed to be that fast.
THAT IS THE COMPOSER CONDUCTING SO IT IS OBVIOUSLY THE RIGHT SPEED !
To each arranger choirmaster's discrition!. But the notations of this piece sets up the pace and this is the right speed.

They need to stick to the old way. All this puting a different way of singing. I like the old way.
NO! The original tune I learned as a boy in England, singing in our church choir, is much better, more up tempo and cheerful.
