PNG has over 5,000 AUSTRALIAN companies that remuneration that easily exceeds AUSD1 Billion in any given year. What are you Aussies yapping on about? The biggest winner is Australia economically and security wise. PM ALBO deserves credit for this master stroke. Imagine PNG allowing China to have a military base in Gulf Province, a venture that was mooted a while ago and can be revisited. China would easily exceed the Australian 600 million dollars Aussies tax payers are harping on about. Remember PNG is a sovereign nation and can easily backflip on the NRL deal. We can easily make other sports our own with China's willing help. Off course when this happens you Aussies will be having nightmares and sleepless night with the menacing REDS at your doorsteps.

As a Papua New Guinean and a mad Rugby League fan, I can honestly say, I don't like this deal because it is rushed. When politicians say this endeavor will change peoples lives, I really cant see how. A better option will be to invest AUS$600million to boost our Police Force or teach our local farmers here to be more competitive with producing high standard agricultural products for Asian and European markets. Empowerment of our people is better than building a colosseum when Rome is already burning at the edges.

Excellent comments. Sport is a luxury and at present both in Australia and PNG, there are greater priorities especially our flagging education system and youth crime.

Somehow I do believe this will work. A brand new project and sports, esp rugby league, and, due to the bigger scale of global security, regional to be precise...can work involving every manner of government institutions, educational institutions, economics and investing into every facet to modernise the game, hence committing communities, social settings, bringing the beloved sport, rugby league to the PNG people. China will still invest in PNG no doubt however the regions security concerns will be manageable.

@@ZantaPlayAUD$ 51 billion Internal budget that has no tangible benefit on majority of population living under the poverty line....to the impoverished with lack of basic opportunities, a AUD$600million rugby team is a luxury we can't afford right now especially with the spending and borrowing trends of the current PNG government.

While they are diverting our attention with rugby league and whining about their taxpayer money. The Government of the People's Republic of China, through its embassy in Solomon Islands, is now providing fully funded academic education programs for interested and qualified candidates who wish to pursue further studies in China. After being accepted, the chosen applicants will get round-trip airfare, full scholarships, housing, and living costs for the time they are studying in China.
While it takes forever to be granted a visa for PNGeans travel to Australia to work as farmers.

Stop being negative here. We must welcome this milestone investment to develop our sporting code of Rugby League. This provides a great opportunity for our youths to engage at the elite NRL level for both men and women. We are very privileged now. It's all about being diplomatic in empowering our youths and strengthening our bilateral relationship with PNG-Australia.

This deal is a plus to Australia-PNG and Pacific regional stability with regards to China's Pacific invasion strategies and Australian PM Albanese has made a huge call for PNG rugby league. If he never did, China would have dived in to PNG rugby league at whatever cost and we will never want that to happen. While PM Albanese has done his part, can the Marape government do theirs by educating the PNG rugby population first up because I would be ashamed about Australian tax payers money going to waste at our side of the deal..

Look at the bigger picture. It’s not just about us in PNG but the entire Pacific region. I’m sure that in a few years, other Pacific Island nations might also want to have the chance to form an NRL team. I agree that it’s not just about the NRL or the sport itself but about changing lives.

You don't need politician, you need a true leader to redeem your country. You have been manipulated into believing your oppressor.
